Listening Mode — Hear, Guess, and Verify Without Subtitles

(Lives under: Language learning → Features → Fluency Gym → Listening Mode)

Overview

Train your ears like an athlete. In Listening Mode, a line of dialogue plays without visible subtitles so you focus purely on sound. You guess exactly what was said, then—after a short delay—the upper subtitle appears to verify your answer. Need a hint? Subtitles are softly blurred and can be peeked by hovering, or you can wait for the timed reveal. It’s the fastest way to build real-world listening, dictation accuracy, and shadowing fluency while watching YouTube, Netflix, or Disney+.

What you’ll do

  • Hear the line → guess the exact words
  • Wait a few seconds → upper subtitle reveals for a quick check
  • If stuck → hover to peek blurred subs before the reveal
  • Shadow the line to polish rhythm and pronunciation
  • Track wins → see how many guesses you got right this session

Guides

Guide 1 — Pure Listening (Guess → Reveal) Why: Removing text forces true listening. How: Let the audio play with subs blurred. Say (or type) what you think you heard. After the short delay, the upper subtitle appears—compare and correct yourself. Pro tip: If you missed a word, replay the line and focus only on the missing piece.

Guide 2 — Dictation Drill (Audio → Text) Why: Dictation sharpens precision with small words, linking, and endings. How: Pause after the audio and write the exact sentence you heard. When the upper subtitle reveals, check every word and punctuation. Benchmark: Aim for 90% accuracy by the end of your first week.

Guide 3 — Shadowing for Accent & Rhythm Why: Copying native timing and melody improves clarity fast. How: After verification, shadow the line—speak simultaneously with the actor. Repeat once more as an echo (actor first, you after). Pro tip: Keep it short. Two shadows per line beat one long, tiring attempt.

Guide 4 — Customize Your Difficulty (Delay & Hints) Why: The right challenge = faster progress. How: Open Customize and set the pause/translation delay. Longer delay = more “pure listening.” Need help? Hover to peek blurred subs before reveal. Start setting: Medium delay, no peeks for the first 5 lines, then adjust.

Guide 5 — Track Accuracy & Build a Streak Why: Tiny wins keep you motivated. How: Use the session counter to see how many guesses were correct. Mini-goal: 10 lines, 7+ correct. Routine: Do one quick session (5–10 minutes) daily for compounding gains.
