Dark Matter (2024 TV Series) Science Metaphors: Literal Physics vs Everyday English

Science-heavy shows create a sneaky English problem: a phrase can sound “scientific” without being a metaphor at all. The useful skill is not spotting fancy vocabulary. It is deciding what the words are pointing to right now: a literal physical system, an everyday situation described in technical-style language, or ordinary English that works in both worlds.

The literal → transfer → test method
  1. Literal: identify the concrete thing being described in the scene.
  2. Transfer: ask whether the same wording could naturally describe work, relationships, plans, emotions, or decisions.
  3. Test: if the everyday use borrows a scientific frame to describe something non-scientific, you have a figurative or extended use. If the word keeps the same ordinary meaning, it is not a metaphor just because scientists use it.

First, stop calling every science-flavored phrase a metaphor

There are three useful buckets:

1. Literal physics: keep the referent in view

Show moment: literal scientific description that it is in an undetermined state

Here the phrase describes the atom's condition as unresolved. That makes the reading literal within the scientific explanation. The key noun is not “life,” “career,” or “relationship”; the referent is a physical system.

Diagnosis: scientific referent + technical register + direct description = literal science.

Original practice example — extended everyday use:

“Our launch date is still in an undetermined state.”

This sounds deliberately technical for an ordinary planning problem. The speaker is borrowing the formal frame of an unresolved “state” and applying it to a project. That is an extended use, and it can feel slightly dry or humorous.

2. Listen for the “translation signal”

Good explainers often announce that technical wording is about to be unpacked. That signal is gold for language learners because it tells you: do not panic about the term; a plain-English version is coming.

which is a fancy way of saying

This sentence stem introduces a simpler explanation of a more technical expression. It is not itself a science metaphor. It is a register bridge: formal idea → ordinary wording.

When you hear this kind of bridge, pause mentally and predict what comes next. The speaker will usually define, simplify, or paraphrase. That prediction makes dense dialogue easier to follow even when the technical term is new.

3. “Suggests” sounds scientific, but it is not automatically metaphorical

suggests something crazy.

In this context, the verb marks an evidence-based conclusion that is possible rather than proven. Scientists use this kind of cautious language constantly—but so does everyone else.

Original practice examples:

Scientific-style: “The pattern suggests the two variables are connected.”

Everyday: “Her silence suggests she isn't thrilled about the plan.”

The basic meaning is the same: available evidence points toward a conclusion. That is shared general English, not a metaphor.

4. Compare scientific uncertainty with everyday uncertainty

One reason Dark Matter is useful for learners is that the language of uncertainty is not trapped inside physics. English uses a whole confidence scale in ordinary plans and opinions too.

Lower certainty I might go over to

The modal marks a possible plan, not a decision. Nothing scientific is happening here; it is ordinary everyday uncertainty.

Higher certainty I'm definitely going... But, hey,

The certainty adverb pushes the speaker toward the other end of the scale. Again, this is everyday modality, not a scientific metaphor.

This contrast is useful because science fiction can trick learners into over-reading ordinary grammar. Sometimes “might,” “probably,” or “definitely” is just normal English doing its normal job.

The fastest metaphor test: change the referent

When a phrase feels scientific, replace the thing being described.

Step A: If the referent is an atom, measurement, experiment, or physical process, start with a literal reading.

Step B: Replace it with “my relationship,” “the project,” “my career,” or “our plans.”

Step C: Ask whether the sentence still sounds natural. If it does, decide whether the meaning stayed the same or whether the technical frame became figurative.

Three mistakes learners make

Mistake 1: “Technical word = metaphor”

No. A technical word used for its technical referent is usually literal. The drama around it does not magically make it figurative.

Mistake 2: “Used outside science = metaphor”

Not always. Some words—especially evidence and probability language—already belong to general English. Their everyday use may require no metaphorical jump at all.

Mistake 3: “Metaphor means the science is accurate”

Figurative English borrows a frame because it is expressive, not because the comparison survives a physics exam. Treat the everyday meaning as communication first, scientific analogy second.

Metaphorical. A physical force is borrowed to describe psychological pull or importance. This is writer-created and not dialogue from the show.

Quick semantic checklist

Turn the distinction into speaking practice

Pick one technical-looking phrase and make three sentences: one clearly literal, one clearly everyday, and one deliberately metaphorical. Then explain why you classified each one. That forces you to learn meaning, not just memorize a translation.
