Fargo Storytelling: Use Linking Words to Explain an Unlikely Chain of Events

You know the story in your head. Then you start telling it in English and suddenly every sentence begins with and then—or worse, you use because where you mean so and accidentally reverse the logic.

The fix is not memorizing fifty linking words. Use the Story Switchyard: decide what relationship the next sentence has to the previous one, then send it onto the right track.

One rule does most of the work: a linking word should describe the relationship between ideas. It is not decoration. If two events merely happen one after another, do not invent causation between them.

Start the story, then show where the listener is

You know what, one time,

This is a spoken story opener. It tells the listener, “I’m leaving the present conversation and entering one specific past episode.”

And now

This does something different: it moves from earlier events to the present consequence or current stage. That makes it useful when a story has a long setup but you need to show why it matters now.

Writer-original: “I started the course for fun. I kept practicing every week. And now I use English at work.”

TIME is not CAUSE

Then I changed my mind.

Then places the change later in the sequence. It does not tell us why the change happened.

Soon as you decide.

This links two events by timing: once one event happens, the next can follow immediately. Again, that is a time relationship, not necessarily a cause.

Same events, different logic

TIME: “I checked the address. Then I left.”
CAUSE: “I left because the shop was closing.”
RESULT: “The shop was closing, so I left.”

Same neighborhood of events; three different relationships.

CAUSE and RESULT point in opposite directions

This is the connector mistake that can make an otherwise clear story feel logically upside down.

CAUSE: “I missed the bus because my alarm failed.” The alarm problem explains the missed bus.
RESULT: “My alarm failed, so I missed the bus.” The missed bus is the result.
Quick test: with because, ask “why?” With so, ask “what happened as a result?”

Not every “so” means result

So they say.

Here so is not linking a cause to a result. The whole expression distances the speaker from a reported claim: other people say it, but the speaker is not personally confirming it.

That matters in storytelling. “People say X” and “X caused Y” are completely different jobs.

COMPLICATION: the story stops going in a straight line

Yeah, okay, but, uh...

The speaker partly accepts what came before, then starts a qualification. This is how real stories often work: yes, that happened—but there is a catch.

This contrasts a problem with the outcome that still happened. The shape is useful: problem, but unexpected result.

Writer-original: “The train was delayed, but I still arrived before the meeting.”
Except I was warm in bed

Except introduces a fact that does not fit comfortably with the previous picture. Use this track when the new detail changes how the listener should interpret the story.

Inference: tell the listener what you think, not what you know

Looks like she fled the road

The structure presents an inference from evidence. It does not certify the event as fact. That distinction is gold when retelling something confusing: separate observed facts from your reconstruction.

I was thinking maybe

This makes the hypothesis explicitly tentative. Use a frame like this when your listener needs to know where certainty ends and your theory begins.

Writer-original: “The lights were off, so I was thinking maybe they had closed early.”

BRANCH: pause the timeline and test another possibility

And if you got pets--dog,

An if clause opens a conditional branch. The story is no longer simply moving forward; it is asking, “What changes under this condition?”

What if…? opens a hypothetical branch. It is useful when testing rules, imagining alternatives, or exploring how the chain would change.

Writer-original: “What if the key was in the other bag? Then the whole mix-up makes sense.”
so long as I don't look.

So long as means a condition must remain true. It is another branch device: outcome A holds only under condition B.

RETURN: rescue the listener from your side story

Anyhoo,

This informal marker leaves an aside and returns to the main topic. Every good storyteller needs a way back, especially after a funny detail, explanation, or mini-detour.

I took a detour.

Literal or figurative, a detour is a useful picture for storytelling itself: sometimes you leave the direct line. Just make sure the listener knows when you are coming back.

Correction is a track switch too

Now, hold on.

This stops the current interpretation so the speaker can challenge or correct it. In a complicated story, correcting early is better than letting the listener build five more conclusions on a wrong detail.

I mean, seriously,

I mean can reformulate or refocus a point. Use reformulation when the logic is technically correct but the listener has lost the main idea.

Chain Repair: fix the relationship, not just the grammar

“My alarm failed, because I missed the bus.”

The cause runs backward. Repair it as: “I missed the bus because my alarm failed.” Or: “My alarm failed, so I missed the bus.”

“The café was closed, because I went next door.”

If the closure caused the move, use result: “The café was closed, so I went next door.”

“I thought I was late, so the meeting had been moved.”

Your thought did not cause the schedule change. Use contrast: “I thought I was late, but the meeting had been moved.”

“My phone died, then I couldn’t call anyone.”

Chronology is possible, but the relationship is more informative as cause/result: “My phone died, so I couldn’t call anyone.”

“I missed the turn. Anyway, I took the next exit.”

If there was no digression to return from, anyway is doing the wrong job. Use sequence/result instead: “I missed the turn, so I took the next exit.”

One unlikely chain, six tracks

Writer-original story: I missed my bus, [RESULT] so I took the train. [TIME] Then the train stopped between stations. My phone was dead, [RESULT] so I couldn’t message anyone. [COMPLICATION] But a coworker happened to be on the same platform when we finally got off. [RESULT] So we shared a taxi. The taxi driver knew a shortcut, and somehow we arrived five minutes early. [RETURN] Anyway, that is how missing the bus made me early for work.

Round 1: retell it with the track labels visible. Round 2: hide the labels and retell it naturally. Round 3: change one event and switch the connector that no longer fits.

Your listener should never have to reverse-engineer the logic

A surprising story can be complicated without being confusing. Put events on the TIME track, reasons on CAUSE, consequences on RESULT, surprises on COMPLICATION, possibilities on BRANCH, and side stories back on RETURN. When the relationship changes, switch tracks. That is what makes an unlikely chain sound believable and easy to follow.
