particle physics — the study of fundamental particles and their interactions
Label: Real science. Particle physics asks what matter is made of at very small scales and how particles interact. Natural combinations include particle accelerator, particle detector, and fundamental particle.
quantum mechanics — the framework used to describe physical behavior at atomic and subatomic scales
Label: Real science. The U.S. Department of Energy’s quantum-mechanics explainer emphasizes behavior such as quantization, probability, and wave-particle properties. It is not “physics with extra confidence,” and quantum is not a magic adjective meaning advanced.
relativity — Einstein’s frameworks connecting space, time, motion, and gravity
Label: Real science. The Department of Energy’s relativity overview distinguishes special relativity from general relativity. Special relativity concerns motion, light, space, and time without gravity; general relativity describes gravity through the geometry of spacetime. In ordinary English, “everything is relative” is not a scientific summary of either theory.
string theory — a theoretical framework in which fundamental ingredients are modeled as tiny vibrating strings
Label: Real science, theoretical and unconfirmed. Caltech’s string-theory explanation describes its attempt to connect quantum physics and gravity. The key learner warning is evidential: string theory is serious research, but it has not been experimentally confirmed as the final description of nature.
Famous models and phenomena: where shortcuts create bad definitions

Higgs boson — a particle associated with the Higgs field
Label: Real science. CERN’s Higgs-boson explanation describes its connection to the Higgs field and the 2012 discovery. The popular shortcut “it gives everything mass” is too broad: the Higgs mechanism contributes to the mass of elementary particles, while much of the mass of ordinary matter comes from energy inside protons and neutrons.
Schrödinger’s cat — a thought experiment illustrating a problem in interpreting quantum superposition
Label: Real science history and philosophy. The American Physical Society’s student explanation treats the cat as a thought experiment, not a laboratory instruction. The point is the strange consequence of extending quantum descriptions to an everyday object—not a scientific fondness for putting pets in boxes.
uncertainty principle — a quantum limit on how precisely certain pairs of physical properties can be specified together
Label: Real science. A common example concerns position and momentum. It does not mean “scientists are unsure about everything,” and it is not a sophisticated synonym for indecision about dinner.
Doppler effect — the observed change in frequency caused by relative motion between a source and an observer
Label: Real science. NASA’s space-flight explanation of the Doppler effect connects relative motion with changes in observed frequency. The changing pitch of a passing siren is the familiar sound example; astronomers also use shifts in light.
singularity — a region or point in a mathematical description where quantities become extreme and the theory’s ordinary description breaks down
Label: Real science, use cautiously. In black-hole discussions, the term is associated with a predicted central breakdown in current theory. It is not simply another word for the black hole’s visible edge.
event horizon — the boundary beyond which signals cannot escape a black hole

Academic and computing English: the words scientists use around the science

hypothesis — a proposed, testable explanation or prediction

binary — a system based on two values or categories
Label: Computing and general English. In computing, binary commonly means base two, using 0 and 1. More broadly, a binary choice presents two alternatives. Do not assume every two-part distinction is naturally or usefully binary.
prime number — a whole number greater than one divisible only by one and itself
Label: Mathematics. Two, three, five, and seven are prime. One is not. And a prime number does not consider itself better than the other numbers; prime has a specialized mathematical meaning here.
peer review — evaluation of scholarly work by experts in the same field

Natural phrases include undergo peer review, peer-reviewed journal, and submit for peer review. It is not your roommate checking whether the bathroom schedule follows the agreement.
Nobel Prize — an internationally recognized award in fields including physics

Winning one is extraordinary; casually calling someone “Nobel Prize material” is praise or humor, not an academic prediction.
Show culture and joke mechanics: where information becomes comedy

comic book convention — an event where fans, creators, performers, and businesses gather around comics and related popular culture

cosplay — dressing and often performing as a fictional character
Label: Show or culture. The word blends costume and play. It can be a noun or verb: She enjoys cosplay; They cosplayed as superheroes. The activity may involve craft, performance, photography, or community—not merely wearing a costume once.
roommate agreement — a written set of rules between people who share a home
Label: Show or culture, with ordinary real-world meaning. In the series’ comic world, extreme precision around shared living becomes a recurring source of conflict and character humor. Outside the show, a practical roommate agreement may cover rent, cleaning, guests, and quiet hours without requiring constitutional-level litigation.
Bazinga — a catchphrase associated with signaling a joke, prank, or comic reveal in the series
Label: Show or culture. It is useful to recognize, but it is not standard punctuation to add after every joke. A signal can tell you that a comic move occurred; it does not explain why the move was funny.
sarcasm — language used to mock, criticize, or express contempt, often by saying something different from or opposite to the intended meaning

Label: Joke mechanism. A punchline completes one joke; a running joke develops across multiple moments. Recognition depends partly on memory: the scene may be funny because you know the earlier rule, habit, phrase, or conflict being called back.
