com-PU-ter。単語だけなら言える。でも I left my computer at work. に入れた瞬間、3syllablesが全部同じ重さになる。これならstress位置を「知っている」のに、speechではまだ使えていません。word stress練習はdictionaryで終わらせず、sentenceまで運びます。
- LOCATE:dictionaryやmodelでprimary stressを確認する
- MARK:syllablesを分け、stressed syllableを見える形にする
- SHAPE:word単体でstrong/weak contrastを作る
- EMBED:short phrase → full sentenceへ入れる
- CHECK:sentenceの中でもdictionary/modelで確認したstress patternが不必要にflattenしていないか確認する
wordのshapeを保ったまま、sentenceを長くする。
LOCATE:stress位置は推測せず、まず確認する
英語のword stressには傾向がありますが、完全に予測できるわけではありません。British CouncilのStressでも、word stressは学習者が個々のwordで確認する必要があること、word familyやnoun/verb pairでstress位置が変わることが説明されています。
だから、新しい多音節wordを見たら「たぶんここ」と決めず、learner dictionaryや信頼できるmodelで確認します。British CouncilのUsing a dictionaryでは、primary stressをstressed syllableの前のmarkで示す例が紹介されています。dictionaryによってnotationは少し違うので、そのdictionaryのkeyも確認してください。
dictionaryは住所確認です。実際にsentenceで言えるかどうかは、まだ配達テストが残っています。
MARK:strong syllableを見える形にする
- com-PU-ter
- PHO-to-graph
- pho-TO-gra-pher
| Word | Practice marking | Point |
|---|---|---|
| photograph | PHO-to-graph | first syllable |
| photographer | pho-TO-gra-pher | stress shifts |
| photographic | pho-to-GRAPH-ic | stress shifts again |
つまり、「一度覚えたfamilyのstressを全部コピー」は危険です。derived formはもう一度LOCATEします。
4つのword stress practice card
Original practice example
I left my computer at work.
Target wordは computer。dictionary/modelで確認したword内部のprimary stressをbaselineとして、sentence rhythmの中へ埋めます。
仕事、学校、忘れ物の説明。
「職場にパソコンを置いてきました。」
computer → my computer → I left my computer at work の順に長くし、target wordのshapeがflattenしないか確認してください。
Original practice example
I took a photograph near the station.
Target wordは photograph。family memberの photographer と同じstress locationだと思い込まないこと。
旅行、写真、出来事の説明。
「駅の近くで写真を撮りました。」
photograph → a photograph → I took a photograph near the station とembedしてください。
Original practice example
The photographer arrived early.
photographer は photograph とはstress位置が異なるfamily memberです。derived formごとに確認します。
予約、イベント、撮影の予定について話す場面。
「写真家は早く到着しました。」
photographer → the photographer → The photographer arrived early の順で言ってください。
Original practice example
Could you send me the information by email?
Target wordは information。dictionary/modelでstress locationを確認してからsentenceへ入れ、word内部のstrong/weak contrastを失わないようにします。
メール、仕事、問い合わせで情報送付を頼む場面。
「その情報をメールで送ってもらえますか?」
まずword単体、次に the information、最後にfull sentenceでCHECKしてください。
Word stressとsentence stressは別レベル
| Skill | Target | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Word stress | word内部のstressed syllable | com-PU-ter |
| Sentence stress | sentenceの中でwhole wordがどれだけprominentか | I need the COMPUTER, not the tablet. |
このarticleでは、dictionary/modelで確認したlexical patternをpractice baselineにします。sentence-level prominenceはその上に重なる別の変数です。実際のmodelでcontext-sensitiveなstress adjustmentがある場合は、その実現を観察して優先します。
Word stressを説明するときの英語も修理する
| 元の表現 | 分類 | 聞き手の解釈 | 意図 | 自然な代案 | 文脈メモ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The accent is in the second syllable. | wrong | stress locationの意味は理解できますが、neutral pronunciation instructionでは on を使います。 | second syllableにprimary stressがある | The stress is on the second syllable. | The second syllable is stressed. も自然です。 |
| Stress stronger the second syllable. | wrong | second syllableを強くしたい意図は分かりますが、adverb/complement structureが崩れています。 | second syllableをよりprominentにする | Stress the second syllable more. | Make the second syllable more prominent. も自然です。 |
| This word has stress at the second syllable. | unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic | 意味は通じますが、word stressの位置には on がより自然です。 | second syllableにstressがある | This word has stress on the second syllable. | The stress falls on the second syllable. も自然です。 |
| I lost the stress when I put it to the sentence. | wrong | sentenceに入れるとstressが崩れた意図は推測できますが、put it to the sentence は不自然です。 | wordをsentenceに入れたらstress patternが崩れた | I lost the stress pattern when I put the word into the sentence. | when I used the word in a sentence
LOCATE → MARK → SHAPE → EMBED → CHECK。wordのshapeを保ったままsentenceを長くできれば、stress markが知識からspeechへ移ります。
