英語の短縮形を聞いて話す練習|I'd・he's・don'tを文脈で捉える

I’d・he’s・don’tを聞くと意味が止まる人へ。HEAR→EXPAND→LOOK RIGHT→CHECK MEANING→RE-SAYで、短縮形を文法と文脈から復元して話す練習をします。

短い答え

I’dhe’s は、音だけで即決しません。候補をexpandし、後ろのgrammarとsentence meaningを確認してからreadingを選び、最後にcontractionへ戻して言います。

I’d love to help.I’dI would。でも I’d finished before noon. なら I had。音が同じなら、答えは音の中ではなく、その後ろのgrammarにあります。

  1. HEAR:contractionを1unitとして拾う
  2. EXPAND:standardな候補を全部出す
  3. LOOK RIGHT:following verb phraseやword classを見る
  4. CHECK MEANING:tense・aspect・modality・contextで絞る
  5. RE-SAY:full formを理解したうえでcontractionへ戻す

音を当てるより、grammarを復元する。

まずmap:短縮形によって「候補の数」が違う

Cambridge GrammarのContractionsでは、’sis / has’dhad / wouldn’tnot のcontracted formとして整理されています。

今回の3つを最初に整理する
ContractionStandard expansionAmbiguity
I’dI had / I would2候補
he’she is / he has2候補
don’tdo notstandard expansionは1つ

I’d lab:I had / I would を両方出してから絞る

Cambridge DictionaryのI’dは、I hadI would の両方をstandard expansionとして載せています。

I’d をexpandしてから判断する
Aを見る

I would lovewould + base verb の形が自然です。

Bを見る

I had finished。past perfectの had + past participle です。

Cを見る

I would have calledcalled がpast participleだからといって、最初の ’d を機械的に had と決めると失敗します。verb phrase全体を見ます。

I’d はzip fileみたいなものです。まず開いてgrammarを戻し、そのあとsentence meaningを確認します。

he’s lab:he is / he has をgrammarとmeaningで分ける

Cambridge Dictionaryのhe’sは、he ishe has のshort formです。

he’s の最初の見方
SentenceLikely expansionWhy
He’s tired.He is tired.adjective complement
He’s working today.He is working today.be + -ing
He’s just arrived. He has just arrived.present perfect reading

ただし、「past participleっぽいwordが来たら必ず has」というruleにはしません。Englishにはparticipial adjectiveもあり、wider contextが必要なsentenceもあります。

Need-more-context challenge

He’s gone.

contextによって He has gone と分析する場面も、He is gone とstate/absenceを表す場面もあります。どちらが自然かはwider context次第で、両方が毎回同じ確率という意味ではありません。今は1つに決めないも正しいlistening decisionです。

don’t:ambiguityより、sentence jobを見る

Cambridge Dictionaryでは、don’tdo not のshort formです。

  • I don’t drive to work. — negative statement
  • Don’t touch that. — negative imperative
  • Why don’t we leave now? — suggestion patternとして使われることがある

4つのcontraction practice card

Original practice example

I’d love to come, but I’m working late.

I’d = I wouldwould + love のmodal patternを復元してからcontractionへ戻します。

誘いに対して行きたい気持ちを示しつつ予定を説明する場面。

「行きたいんだけど、遅くまで仕事なんだ。」

I would love... とfull formで一度言い、そのあと I’d love... に戻してください。

Original practice example

I’d already left when she called.

I’d = I hadhad + already + past participle のpast-perfect readingです。

過去の2つの出来事の順番を説明する場面。

「彼女が電話したときには、私はもう出ていました。」

HEAR → EXPANDで I had を確認し、full formからcontractionへ戻してください。

Original practice example

He’s been waiting for twenty minutes.

he’s = he hashas been waiting というpresent perfect continuousのverb phraseです。

誰かがどれくらい待っているか説明する場面。

「彼は20分待っています。」

He has been waiting... を復元してからshort formへ戻してください。

Original practice example

I don’t think we need another meeting.

don’t = do not。expansionは単純でも、sentence全体ではspeakerのopinionをnegativeにframeしています。

職場や予定調整で、自分の意見を伝える場面。

「もう1回会議が必要だとは思いません。」

full form I do not think... とcontracted formを比べてください。

Contractionsはslangではない。でもregisterはある

Cambridge Grammarでは、contractionsはeveryday speechとinformal writingで一般的だと説明されています。一方、formal writingでは通常避けられることがあります。

I’dhe’s を使うこと自体がslangというわけではありません。ただし、academic/legal/business style guideなどではfull formsを選ぶことがあります。exact ruleは文書のstyleに従います。

短縮形を説明するときの英語も修理する

Contraction practiceで使いやすい自然な英語
元の表現分類聞き手の解釈意図自然な代案文脈メモ
I’d means always “I would.”wrong語順が不自然で、内容も I had のpossibilityを消しています。I’d の意味を説明したい“I’d” can mean “I would” or “I had.”following grammarとcontextで判断します。
He’s can be he is.unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic意味は通じますが、expansionの説明としてぎこちないです。he’s はhe isを表せる“He’s” can stand for “he is.”he has のpossibilityもあります。
I expanded “don’t” like “do not.”unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic意図は分かりますが、expansionの対応には to が自然です。don’tをdo notへ戻したI expanded “don’t” to “do not.”“Don’t” is short for “do not.” も自然です。
I can’t distinguish what “I’d” is.unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic迷っていることは分かりますが、2候補を選ぶ表現として不自然です。I’dがI hadかI wouldか区別できないI can’t tell whether “I’d” means “I had” or “I would.”tell whether... が自然です。

TRANSFER:聞いたcontractionを5手で戻す

HEAR → EXPAND → LOOK RIGHT → CHECK MEANING → RE-SAY

grammarだけで1つに絞れないなら、無理に決めません。wider contextを待つ。それも正しいlistening skillです。

short formだからmeaningまでshort-cutしなくていい。HEAR → EXPAND → LOOK RIGHT → CHECK MEANING → RE-SAY。音を当てるより、grammarを復元してください。
