Yesterday I went… then I eat… then my friend call… คนฟังยังพอเดาได้—but เขาต้องซ่อม timeline ให้คุณเยอะไปหน่อย 😄 ให้ listener เห็น timeline ก่อน แล้วค่อยคิดว่า tense ไหนทำงานอะไร.

  1. Scene — เรื่องเกิดเมื่อไร/ที่ไหน?
  2. Main Event — เหตุการณ์หลักที่เกิดและจบแล้วคืออะไร?
  3. Sequence — จุดไหนต้องบอกก่อน-หลัง?
  4. Background — ตอนนั้นมีอะไร “กำลังเกิดอยู่” ที่ช่วยให้เรื่องเข้าใจขึ้นไหม?
  5. Result — สุดท้ายเกิดอะไรขึ้น หรือคุณรู้สึกยังไง?

Past simple เป็นรางหลักของเรื่องสั้น ๆ

British Council LearnEnglish อธิบายว่า past simple ใช้กับ action ที่อยู่ในอดีต ส่วน past continuous แสดง action ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในช่วงหนึ่งของอดีต. เวลารวมกัน past-simple event สามารถเกิดขึ้นระหว่าง ongoing background ได้.

I left work, missed the bus, and took a taxi home.

สามเหตุการณ์นี้เกิดและจบตามลำดับ. ไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนเป็น continuous เพียงเพราะอยากให้ story ดู advanced.

Past continuous ต้อง “มีงานทำ” ถึงจะใช้

I was walking home when it started to rain.

was walking ทำให้ listener เห็น action ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่; started คือ event ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างนั้น.

แต่ถ้าเป็นแค่สอง completed events:

I finished work and called him.

past simple สองตัวก็พอ. British Council เองก็ชี้ว่าความเหมาะสมของ simple/continuous ขึ้นกับ context และ intention ไม่ใช่สูตรตายตัว.

สอง error ที่ทำให้ timeline สะดุดทันที

Yesterday I go to the station.

เปิด repair

Wrong for the intended finished past event. ใช้ Yesterday I went to the station..

I was went home.

เปิด repair

Wrong hybrid. ถ้าหมายถึง “กลับบ้านแล้ว” ใช้ I went home. ถ้าหมายถึง action ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ ใช้ I was going home.

“Then” ไม่ผิด—but ถ้าทุกประโยคเริ่ม then เรื่องจะฟังเหมือน receipt

Then I got coffee. Then I sat down. Then I opened my laptop. Then I saw an error.

ไม่ต้องหา synonym มาแทนทุก then. กลุ่ม action ที่ติดกันก่อน:

I got coffee, sat down and opened my laptop. After that, I noticed an error.

  • First — opening order สำคัญ
  • Then — next step หนึ่งจุด
  • After that — เปลี่ยน stage
  • While — background ที่เกิดพร้อมกัน
  • When — เชื่อม event กับ background
  • By the time — ชี้ endpoint ที่อีกเหตุการณ์เสร็จไปแล้ว
  • In the end — outcome/result

5 everyday stories ที่ listener ตามทัน

Original practice example

Yesterday after work, I left the office late. First, I ran to the station, but the bus was delayed. By the time I got there, the train had already left. In the end, I took the next one.

Scene ชัด, main events เดินหน้า, sequence links ใช้เฉพาะจุดที่ timeline ต้องการ. Past perfect ใช้เพื่อชี้ว่า train ออกไปก่อนถึงสถานี—not เพราะทุกเรื่องต้องมีมัน.

ใช้เล่า missed train / late bus / travel mishap

เมื่อวานหลังเลิกงานฉันออกออฟฟิศช้า วิ่งไปสถานีแต่รถบัสล่าช้า พอไปถึงรถไฟก็ออกไปแล้ว สุดท้ายขึ้นขบวนถัดไป

ตัดหนึ่ง detail ที่ไม่ช่วย timeline แล้วเล่าใหม่ให้สั้นลง.

Original practice example

I was making breakfast when my cat jumped onto the table and knocked over my coffee.

Background มีงานชัด: breakfast กำลังเกิดอยู่ตอน cat event เกิด.

ใช้กับเรื่องตลก/วุ่น ๆ ที่บ้าน

ฉันกำลังทำอาหารเช้าอยู่ตอนแมวกระโดดขึ้นโต๊ะแล้วทำกาแฟหก

เปลี่ยน background เป็น cooking / cleaning / getting dressed แล้วเพิ่ม main event หนึ่งเหตุการณ์.

Original practice example

I finished the slides, opened the file and noticed one page was missing. After that, I rebuilt it before the meeting.

Original practice example

I was walking home when I saw an old friend from university. We stopped and talked for twenty minutes.

Background + unexpected event แล้วกลับเข้าสู่ main event line.

ใช้เล่า unexpected meeting

ฉันกำลังเดินกลับบ้านตอนเห็นเพื่อนเก่าสมัยมหาวิทยาลัย เราหยุดคุยกันยี่สิบนาที

เปลี่ยน old friend เป็น teacher / neighbour / former colleague.

Original practice example

After my dentist appointment, I went to the pharmacy, bought some medicine and headed home. Then I realised I’d left my wallet at the clinic, so I went back.

แล้ว tense shift แบบ “and she says…” ผิดไหม?

ไม่เสมอไป. ใน conversational storytelling บางคนสลับเข้า present เพื่อทำ moment ให้สดขึ้น เช่น So I opened the door, and she says, “You’re early!”

นี่เป็น stylistic storytelling choice—not default grammar target สำหรับหน้านี้. ถ้ายังควบคุม timeline ไม่มั่น ให้ใช้ past frame ให้เสถียรก่อน: So I opened the door, and she said, “You’re early!”

Main event หรือ background?

I left work and called him.

เปิด diagnosis

Two completed main events. Past simple สองตัวชัดแล้ว.

I was walking home when it started to rain.

เปิด diagnosis

Background + event. Continuous ช่วยให้เห็น action ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่.

Then I got coffee. Then I sat down. Then I opened my laptop.

เปิด diagnosis

Then overload. Group actions: I got coffee, sat down and opened my laptop.

Yesterday I go to the station.

เปิด diagnosis

Past-frame error. Yesterday I went to the station.

I was went home.

เปิด diagnosis

Form error. Choose I went home or I was going home based on the job.

Micro-challenge: เล่า incident เดียวให้จบใน 6 ชิ้น

เลือกเรื่องจริงหนึ่งเรื่อง: missed bus, coffee spill, broken file, unexpected meeting หรือ lost item.

  1. Time anchor หนึ่งอัน
  2. Main past-simple event แรก
  3. Main past-simple event ที่สอง
  4. Main past-simple event ที่สาม
  5. Optional background line หนึ่งอัน—ใช้เฉพาะถ้าช่วย
  6. Result/reaction หนึ่งบรรทัด

ใช้ sequence links แค่สองอัน. ถ้าเพิ่มคำเชื่อมแล้ว story ไม่ชัดขึ้น ตัดออก.

เรื่องที่ชัดไม่ได้ชนะเพราะมี tense เยอะกว่า

Scene → Main Event → Sequence → Background → Result. ให้ past simple เป็นรางหลักก่อน แล้วค่อยเติม background เท่าที่ listener ต้องใช้.

ให้ listener เห็น timeline ก่อน. ถ้า background ไม่ช่วย—ไม่ต้องใส่. ถ้า “then” ไม่ได้บอกอะไรใหม่—ตัดได้. และอย่าลืม result เพราะนั่นคือจุดที่ list กลายเป็น story.
