Spot → Mark → Backchain → Blend → Compare → Transfer

  1. Spot: nghe một short phrase và tìm đúng một boundary có continuity.
  2. Mark: viết normal spelling, chỉ đánh dấu boundary.
  3. Backchain: build phrase từ cuối về đầu.
  4. Blend: nói cả meaning chunk, không drill hai sounds mãi.
  5. Compare: replay source và check continuity—not speed.
  6. Transfer: dùng cùng kiểu boundary trong một phrase mới.

Practise the join inside the phrase, not the join by itself.

Linking là gì—và không phải gì?

British Council TeachingEnglish defines linking as sounds being joined across boundaries, and sometimes a sound being inserted between adjacent sounds to make speech easier to produce.

Its connected-speech guidance notes, among other things, final-consonant → initial-vowel linking, weak forms and other changes across word boundaries.

Nhưng linking ≠ “speak fast”. Bạn có thể nói nhanh mà vẫn choppy. Bạn cũng có thể nói chậm hơn nhưng giữ boundary continuity rất rõ.

Mark boundary, đừng invent respelling

Ví dụ note:

  • pick | it up
  • need | an answer
  • turn | it off
  • look | at it

Dấu | chỉ nói “đây là boundary tôi muốn nghe”. Nó không tuyên bố sound cụ thể phải biến thành gì.

Nếu source có glide, weak form hoặc pronunciation variant khác, copy actual model. Đừng viết một pseudo-spelling rồi bắt mouth phải phục vụ spelling đó.

Backchain: giữ boundary trong phrase thật

British Council’s linking guidance mentions backchaining as a production technique. Với pick it up:

  1. up
  2. it up
  3. pick it up

Goal không phải perfect “join sound” ở step 2 rồi quên cả phrase ở step 3. Goal là whole chunk survive.

Bạn đang kẹt ở đâu?

Chọn pattern gần nhất

Cannot hear word count

Listen first, then check transcript. Awareness comes before production.

Hear it, cannot say it

BACKCHAIN. Build from the end while keeping whole words visible.

Source pace breaks it

BLEND THE CHUNK. Do not accelerate the join alone; keep phrase rhythm together.

Pause at every word

Choose one target boundary only. Preserve everything else naturally.

Forcing an extra sound

STOP. Replay actual source. Linking choices vary across accents, contexts and speaking styles.

Old phrase only

TRANSFER. Keep same boundary type in one new writer-created phrase.

Bốn phrase drills: words đúng, boundary mới là target

Original practice example

Pick it up.

Nếu learner nói cùng wording nhưng chèn full pause như Pick / it up, wording vẫn grammatically correct; delivery chỉ unusual / over-segmented for neutral connected speech. Listener vẫn hiểu. Natural alternative là giữ pick it continuous nếu source model cũng làm vậy.

Useful for practising final-consonant → initial-vowel continuity.

Backchain: up → it up → pick it up.

Original practice example

We need an answer.

Nếu learner nói We need / an answer với strong break, words vẫn grammatically valid, nhưng neutral delivery có thể nghe overly separated. Listener meaning vẫn clear. Natural practice target là copy continuity at need an from the actual model.

Useful for hearing a boundary that disappears perceptually even though both words remain.

Do not respell the phrase; mark only need | an.

Original practice example

Turn it off.

Nếu learner says Turn / it / off, wording is correct but delivery is unusually segmented for ordinary flow. A deliberate pause can still be valid for emphasis or repair; do not label every pause “wrong”.

Useful for linking multiple boundaries inside one short command.

Backchain: off → it off → turn it off.

Original practice example

Take a look at it.

Nếu learner says Take a look / at / it, wording remains grammatically correct; if the source delivers look at it as one unit, the learner version is over-segmented relative to that model. Natural alternative is source-matched continuity, not a universal mandatory link.

Useful for carrying a link through a longer phrase instead of a two-word drill.

Backchain: it → at it → look at it → take a look at it.

Linking cũng là listening practice

British Council TeachingEnglish explains that speech forms a continuous stream without neat word-by-word borderlines and that awareness of connected forms can help learners understand what they hear.

Vì vậy trước mỗi production drill, ask:

“Mình thật sự hear boundary này như thế nào trong source?”

Nếu answer là “không biết”, quay lại listening. Production không cần đi trước perception.

Transfer: đổi phrase, giữ boundary type

Sau khi pick it up workable, đừng repeat thêm 30 lần. Chọn một fresh phrase có similar final-consonant → initial-vowel boundary, nghe model rồi apply same listening routine.

Boundary-to-Chunk exit check

Hear one boundary. Say one whole phrase.

Đừng link vì rule. Link vì source model thực sự does something at that boundary.

Spot it. Mark it. Backchain it. Blend the phrase. Compare. Transfer.

Practise the join inside the phrase, not the join by itself.
