Bạn: So I think—

Colleague: I was just going to—

Bạn: “Sorry.” Colleague: “Sorry.”

Hai người cùng lịch sự. Không ai nói.

JOIN → CHECK → NAME THE GLITCH → REPAIR → CLAIM → LAND → RELEASE

Không cần biến Can you hear me? thành nghi thức bắt buộc ở mọi cuộc gọi.

Original practice example

Hi everyone — can you hear me okay?

Greeting + audio check.

Joining an online meeting and checking the channel.

Shadow entry line, rồi đổi vai người khác trả lời Yes, we can hear you.

CHECK: “on mute” và “breaking up” là hai problem khác nhau

BBC Learning English’s Office English material on calls and instant messages teaches common video-call language such as You’re on mute, Your video is freezing and You’re breaking up. Cambridge also documents the microphone/video-conferencing sense of mute.

Original practice example

You’re on mute.

Use this when the mute state is actually known or visible in the scenario. Silence alone does not prove the microphone is muted.

A participant is speaking while their microphone is muted.

Nghĩa: Micro của bạn đang tắt tiếng.

Role-play the other participant noticing the message, unmuting and continuing.

Original practice example

Sorry, you’re breaking up. I didn’t catch the last part.

Name the observable audio symptom, then recover only the part you lost. Do not call clear audio “breaking up” just because the idea was difficult.

Audio is cutting in and out during a video call.

Repeat only the missing clause, then continue the meeting.

British Council’s Checking understanding lesson supports asking someone to repeat or clarify when you did not hear or understand something. The key is diagnosis.

  • Audio fragments: You’re breaking up.
  • Missed last words: I didn’t catch the last part.
  • Audio clear, idea unclear: ask what the speaker means or ask them to rephrase.

British Council’s Working in a remote team notes that online meetings can produce simultaneous talking and uncomfortable silence, and that turn-taking may need active management. BBC Learning English also teaches polite interruption language and notes that some platforms offer visual raise-hand-style signals.

If the actual platform has a raise-hand feature and your group uses it, great — that visual cue can help. If not, use language.

Original practice example

Could I come in here for a moment? I have one quick point.

You announce that you want the floor before launching into the point. Wording can change with role, urgency and meeting culture.

Entering an active remote discussion.

Shadow the claim, then role-play someone acknowledging: Sure, go ahead.

Original practice example

My main point is that we need another day. That’s all from me.

First sentence lands the contribution. Second sentence releases the floor. The exact phrase is writer-created practice, not a mandatory meeting formula.

Making one concise contribution and handing the discussion back.

Replace the main point with one sentence of your own, then release the turn.

Nhận lượt, nói point, trả lượt. Entry without landing creates rambling; landing without release creates uncertainty about whether you are done.

Video Call State Lab: technical hay turn-taking?

Bạn vừa join và chưa chắc audio tới nhóm.

Xem state

JOIN/CHECK. Hi everyone — can you hear me okay?

Xem state

MUTED. You’re on mute. Silence alone would not be enough evidence.

Audio đến thành từng mảnh.

Xem state

BREAKING UP. Sorry, you’re breaking up. I didn’t catch the last part.

Xem state

MISSED CONTENT. Ask for clarification or rephrasing. Do not claim the connection is breaking up.

Xem state

CLAIM FLOOR. If the real platform/group uses a raise-hand feature, use it. Otherwise: Could I come in here for a moment?

Người khác nhường lượt cho bạn.

Xem state

LAND. My main point is that we need another day.

Bạn đã nói xong point.

Xem state

RELEASE. That’s all from me. hoặc Back to you. khi có người nhận lượt cụ thể.

Hai người bắt đầu cùng lúc.

Xem state

OVERLAP. Pause; one person explicitly yields or reclaims the turn. Do not rely on eye contact alone to resolve it.

Bốn câu dễ chẩn đoán sai call state

Câu gốcPhân loạiNgười nghe hiểu gìÝ địnhCách tự nhiên hơnGhi chú
Can you hear me clear?Wrong/adjectival form in the intended manner questionYou are checking audio clarity.Check whether others hear you clearly. Can you hear me clearly? / Can you hear me okay?Loud and clear is a separate fixed expression.
You are mute.Grammatically possible with a different or potentially insensitive meaningMay describe the person rather than microphone state.Say their microphone is muted. You’re on mute.Use only when the mute state is actually known.
Your voice is cutting.Unusual/non-idiomatic for intended audio fragmentationListener likely infers interrupted sound.Say audio keeps dropping out. You’re breaking up. / Your audio is cutting out.If audio is clear and meaning is unclear, use clarification instead.
I finished.Grammatically valid with a different default meaningMay sound like a task/activity was completed.Signal that your speaking turn is over. That’s all from me. / Back to you.I finished is correct in other contexts.

Bài thử: one-point floor drill

  1. Shadow một short three-turn video-call exchange.
  2. Giấu model.
  3. Inject đúng một state change: muted, breaking up, missed content hoặc overlap.
  4. Repair đúng state đó.
  5. Claim floor.
  6. Nói một sentence bắt đầu bằng My main point is…
  7. Release floor.
  8. Switch roles.

Đây là production extension sau shadowing. Bạn không còn copy sentence; bạn đang quản lý call state.
