Explanation Move Drill: Locate → Label → Shadow → Soften → Own
- Locate: dùng interactive transcript để tìm câu mở đầu.
- Label: move này là Definition, Example, Contrast, Cause hay Mini-conclusion?
- Shadow: luyện đúng đoạn hoàn chỉnh một ý.
- Soften: nếu delivery mang màu sân khấu quá mạnh, đưa nó về mức tự nhiên hơn cho conversation.
- Own: dùng cùng function để giải thích một idea của bạn.
Shadow the explanation move, not the talk.
Example
Giữ cue + example + payoff. Nếu speaker thêm ví dụ thứ hai, có thể stop trước đó.
Contrast
Giữ đủ A và B để contrast có meaning.
Cause
Giữ cause + result cùng một unit.
Mini-conclusion
Giữ sentence chốt và, nếu cần, một sentence trước để context đủ rõ.
1. Definition — luyện cách giải thích một concept rõ ràng
Original practice example
In simple terms, resilience is the ability to recover after difficulty.
Nếu learner nói Resilience means to recover after difficulty, form đó unusual / non-idiomatic for this intended definition. Listener vẫn hiểu concept. Natural alternatives là Resilience means recovering after difficulty hoặc target trên. Mean to + verb thường mang meaning khác: intend to do something.
Dùng khi bạn cần explain một term trong meeting, class hoặc conversation.
Giữ cue In simple terms... rồi define một concept bạn biết.
2. Example — một ví dụ đủ để idea “rơi xuống đất”
Original practice example
For example, a short walk can help you reset after a stressful meeting.
Nếu learner nói For example, short walk can help you reset, hãy phân loại là wrong trong intended standard sentence. Listener hiểu general idea, nhưng singular count noun walk cần determiner ở đây. Natural alternative là a short walk.
Dùng khi bạn vừa nêu một idea và muốn concrete hóa nó.
Say one claim, then add one For example... sentence.
3. Contrast — nghe hai sides cùng một beat
Original practice example
The goal isn’t to avoid mistakes; it’s to recover from them.
Nếu learner nói The goal isn’t avoid mistakes, hãy phân loại là wrong. Listener hiểu intended contrast. Natural alternative là The goal isn’t to avoid mistakes.... Sau the goal is/isn’t, infinitive phrase này cần to.
Dùng khi bạn muốn sửa một misconception bằng “not X, but Y”.
Create one contrast: The goal isn’t to speak faster; it’s to speak more clearly.
4. Cause → effect — giữ cả hai nửa
Original practice example
Because the instructions were unclear, the team repeated the task.
Nếu learner nói Because the instructions were unclear, so the team repeated the task, hãy phân loại là wrong in standard structure vì double linker. Natural alternatives: Because the instructions were unclear, the team repeated the task. hoặc The instructions were unclear, so the team repeated the task.
Dùng để explain nguyên nhân và result trong speech hàng ngày.
Pick either because or so, then build one causal sentence.
TED delivery ≠ conversation delivery
TED speakers đang trên stage. Một pause lớn, một stress dramatic hoặc một sentence ending cực “clean” có thể phục vụ audience. Bạn có thể shadow để hear structure, rồi softer version khi transfer sang conversation.
Goal không phải trở thành mini TED speaker ở coffee shop. Goal là steal explanation structure.
Move note: bốn dòng là đủ
- Opening cue: câu bắt đầu move.
- Idea close: câu kết thúc move.
- Phrase frame: cấu trúc đáng reuse.
- Your version: câu giải thích của bạn.
Nếu bạn chưa biết idea close ở đâu, đoạn vẫn quá rộng.
One move is enough
TED Talk là long-form. Practice unit không cần long-form.
Click transcript. Find one explanation move. Shadow it. Soften it. Own it.
Shadow the explanation move, not the talk.
