如何用英文提示語預測內容結構?
英文 lecture、presentation 一轉折就跟丟?用 SIGNAL→FUNCTION→PREDICT→LISTEN→UPDATE,把 however、for example、moving on to、in summary 等提示語變成即時的內容結構雷達。
英文提示語最有用的地方,不是幫你翻譯,而是讓你提前知道下一段資訊大概會「做什麼」。
你聽到 however,腦中剛翻完「然而」,speaker 已經把 contrasting point 說了一半。提示語有準時出現;只是你的 prediction 還沒啟動。
MAP & SEQUENCE:一聽到清單,就先把空位開好
British Council把 signposts 比作語言裡的交通號誌:它們幫 listener 跟上 speaker 正在談什麼,以及接下來要往哪裡走。像 first of all、moving on to、in summary 都是典型 clues。
最容易先練的是 list structure。聽到 There are three reasons…,不要只當成一句內容;直接在腦中或筆記裡開三個 slots。
Original practice example
There are three reasons. First of all…
MAP & SEQUENCE:speaker 已經免費送你 outline。預測接下來會有三個 ordered points。
Lecture、presentation、meeting update。
Original practice example
The plan is cheaper. However, it will take longer.
CONTRAST:however 讓你提前準備「前面優點,後面補限制」的 structure。
Comparisons、pros/cons、decision-making。
意思:這個方案比較便宜,不過會花更久。
練習:聽到 however 時,先在 notes 寫一個 ↔,再聽 contrasting point。
Road sign 告訴你要轉彎,不會告訴你轉彎後會看到哪棟房子。Prediction 只做到「contrast」,不要開始幻想 exact sentence。
EXAMPLE & CLARIFY:別把 supporting detail 誤升成新主旨
British Council 把 for example、in other words 這類 phrases 也列為 useful signposts。Cambridge Grammar Today 也指出,像 in other words、what I mean is 會幫 speaker rephrase 或 clarify 前面的內容。
這一組 marker 很容易救你的 notes:for example 通常是在支撐前一點,不是突然開新章;in other words 通常是在重講同一個 idea。
Original practice example
For example, a small retailer might…
EXAMPLE:下一段是 illustration,不是新的 top-level point。
Lecture、training、explanations。
意思:例如,一家小型零售商可能會……
練習:notes 前面只寫 E,不要另開 heading。
For example 不是新 main character;它只是來幫前面的 point 演示一下。
RESULT:聽到 so / therefore / as a result,先把箭頭畫出來
Cause–result markers 最適合用「結構先於內容」的方式聽。當前面已經有 cause,接著出現 so、therefore、as a result,你可以直接預測下一段要講 consequence。
Original practice example
The road is closed, so we’ll take another route.
RESULT:so 在這裡把前因和後果接起來。
Instructions、problem-solving、planning。
意思:路封了,所以我們改走別條路。
練習:聽到 result marker,先寫 cause → ?,再填結果。
這種 listening 預測不是猜內容;只是先把空格的標籤寫成「result」。
SHIFT & SUMMARY:一個要換頁,一個要壓縮
Moving on to…、turning now to… 這類 phrases 常常在提醒 listener:新的 section / focus 要開始。In summary、to sum up 則通常是把前面資訊壓縮回核心 points。
Original practice example
Moving on to the second issue…
SHIFT:下一段不是前一點的例子;是新的 focus。
Presentation、lecture、agenda-based meeting。
意思:接下來談第二個問題……
練習:立刻換新 heading;不要把下一段塞在舊 point 底下。
In summary 一出現,就像 speaker 開始壓縮檔案:先停掉 detail hunting,準備抓 main points。
別把 so、well、right、anyway 背成固定翻譯
Cambridge Grammar Today示範了 common spoken markers 的 context-sensitive functions:so 可以開啟 conversation 新部分,well 可以改變 focus, anyway 可以 shift topic, right 也可以做 response management。
這就是為什麼 Structure Radar 最後一定要有 UPDATE。Marker 給你的是 hypothesis,不是法院判決。
Original practice example
Well, that depends.
CONTEXT-SENSITIVE:well 這裡比較像 response-management / hesitation cue,不是固定「好的」。
Conversation、Q&A、meetings。
意思大概是:嗯,這要看情況。
練習:不要翻譯 well;只寫它此刻在 conversation 裡做什麼。
Cambridge 也特別提醒,logical relation 不一定每次都有 discourse marker 明講,listener 有時還是要靠 context 和 shared knowledge 推論。
Structure Radar Lab:下一段要做什麼?
找一段 30–60 秒 lecture、presentation 或 explanation。第一輪不看 transcript。
我只翻譯了 marker,沒有預測
下一輪聽到 marker 後,強迫自己先說一個 function label:contrast / example / result / shift / summary。
我把 example 當成新 main point
回到前一個句子。For example 通常是 support current point,不需要另開 heading。
我聽到 however,但忘了前一點是什麼
Contrast 需要兩邊。先保留 previous point 的一句短 note,再聽 contrast。
我把 well / so / anyway 當固定 meaning
改問:它現在是在 start、shift、respond、reformulate,還是只是 managing the turn?
我的 prediction 錯了,但我很快修正
這正是成功。Prediction 不是要永遠猜對,而是讓 attention 有方向,錯了能立刻 UPDATE。
5-Marker Prediction Sprint:只練「下一段的工作」
拿一段短 audio。每次聽到下面任何一種 marker,就 pause 一秒,先說 function,再繼續:
- however → contrast
- for example → example
- as a result → result
- moving on to → new section
- in summary → summary
不要猜下一句內容。今天只練 road sign,不練 destination。
三個英文說法,幫你更精準描述 signpost function
| 原句 | 分類 | 聽者會理解成 | 你可能想表達 | 自然替代 | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| However always means the speaker disagrees. | 文法成立,但意思不同 | however 永遠表示 interpersonal disagreement。 | however 常引出 contrast / qualification。 | However usually signals a contrast or qualification in the discourse. | 對比可以只是 ideas 之間,不一定是人與人 disagreement。 |
| For example starts a new main point. | 文法成立,但意思不同 | example 是新的 top-level section。 | 接下來有 supporting illustration。 | For example usually introduces an illustration of the current point. | Example 可以帶新資訊,但不等於一定開新 section。 |
| The speaker changed to another topic. | 依情境而定,而且自然 | speaker 換話題了。 | 描述 section/topic transition。 | The speaker moved on to a new topic or section. | 原句完全可以;moved on to 更貼近 discourse transition。 |
如果只記一件事:預測下一段的功能,不是下一句的內容
Signposts 不是 vocabulary collectibles。真正能幫 listening 的是:
SIGNAL → FUNCTION → PREDICT → LISTEN → UPDATE。
聽到 however,準備 contrast;聽到 for example,準備 supporting illustration;聽到 moving on to,換 note heading。你不需要知道轉彎後會看到什麼,只要比以前早半步知道:speaker 要轉彎了。
