| Word | Onset | Nucleus | Coda | 主要 structural load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cat | /k/ | /æ/ | /t/ | simple onset + simple coda |
| play | /pl/ | /eɪ/ | — | complex onset |
| desk | /d/ | /ɛ/ | /sk/ | complex coda |
| street | /str/ | /iː/ | /t/ | complex onset + coda |
- 中間加 vowel;
- 刪掉一個 consonant;
- 把一個 syllable 說成兩個;
- 每個 consonant 都念對,但中間加小 pause。
Original practice example
Please play the blue track.
COMPLEX ONSET:play 的 onset 是 /pl/,blue 是 /bl/。如果你單獨會 /p/、/b/、/l/,但 word 變成兩拍,問題就是 coordination,不是某一個 sound 消失。
當 play 變 “puh-lay”、blue 變 “buh-loo”。
意思:請播放藍色那一軌。
練習:先 map play:onset /pl/、nucleus /eɪ/、no coda。再做 /l/ → /pl/ → play,整個 word 只留一拍。
這裡只做 structural diagnosis。Extra vowel 為什麼出現、怎麼拿掉,是下一層 repair;這篇先讓你知道「哪個 edge 壞了」。
Complex coda:後面太擠時,尾巴會開始掉零件
Cambridge 對 Mandarin-speaking learners 的研究背景指出,在該分析裡 Mandarin 只有兩個 word-final coda consonants,都是 nasals,而且很多 syllables 是 open;English 則可以在 word-final 位置堆出 consonant clusters。
所以有時 learner 覺得 desk 很難,不是因為 /s/ 或 /k/ 很難,而是 /sk/ 必須一起活在 coda。
Original practice example
The desk looks clean.
Original practice example
The street feels quiet.
BOTH EDGES:street = onset /str/ + nucleus /iː/ + coda /t/。
Original practice example
Texts can look difficult.
這就是 parent-page mindset:先診斷是什麼 kind of structure,再進 child repair。不要拿同一把槌子敲所有 pronunciation bug。
Syllable Blueprint Lab:到底是哪個 edge 太擠?
先判斷,再展開。
A. play 被說成兩拍 “puh-lay”
ONSET problem + syllable count changed。Target onset /pl/ 被拆開。下一步應練 direct onset coordination,而不是重練 /p/ 或 /l/ 單音。
B. desk 每次只剩 des 或 deck
CODA problem。Coda /sk/ 被 simplification;要找出哪個 cluster member 消失。
C. street 變 “suh-treet”,而 final /t/ 也常消失
BOTH edges。Onset /str/ 被拆,coda /t/ 又弱。分開修兩邊,再回到 one-syllable target。
D. texts 每個 consonant 都在,但中間有很多小 pause
Segments present, coordination broken。問題不是漏音,而是 coda 被念成一串獨立事件。
One-Word Blueprint:先診斷一個 word,就夠了
下一步只練 overloaded edge。Onset 壞,就先別碰 coda;coda 壞,就別把整個 word 重新裝潢。
Structure Transfer Ladder:同一個 shape 換 word 才算真的學會
如果你修的是 /pl/ onset,不要只把 play 背熟。換另一個相似 shape,例如 please、plan,再放進 phrase。
- Map target word。
- Practise overloaded edge alone。
- Rebuild full word。
- Move to another word with similar syllable shape。
- Put it in a short sentence。
你在練的是 blueprint transfer,不是一張單字卡。
三個英文說法,幫你把 syllable problem 說清楚
| 原句 | 分類 | 聽者會理解成 | 你可能想表達 | 自然替代 | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| This word has too many syllables. | 依情境而定 | Target word 本身有很多 syllables。 | 我的 production 多加了一個 syllable。 | I add an extra syllable when I pronounce this word. | 如果 target word 本來真的有很多 syllables,原句完全成立。 |
| The final letters are difficult to pronounce. | 依情境而定 | 你在談 spelling letters。 | 我想說 final consonant cluster 難。 | The final consonant cluster is difficult to pronounce. | Letters 和 speech sounds 並不總是一對一。 |
| I can pronounce every sound, but not the structure. | 依情境而定 | 個別 sounds 沒問題,但 coordination 有問題。 | 我想更精準說 syllable coordination。 | I can pronounce the individual sounds, but I have trouble coordinating them in the syllable. | 原句作為 informal learner shorthand 可以理解。 |
如果只記一件事:先看骨架,再決定修哪個 sound
你會念 /p/、/l/,不代表 /pl/ 自動成立;你會念 /s/、/k/,也不代表 /sk/ 自動能住在 coda。English pronunciation 的一部分,就是學會新的 syllable shapes。
MAP → COMPARE → REBUILD → TRANSFER。
先看 onset、nucleus、coda;再看哪個 edge 對你的 L1 特別陌生。這樣 play、street、desk、texts 就不再是一群 random 難字,而是一張張可以讀懂的 blueprint。
