Accent
- “You have an accent.” 不等於 “I misunderstood you.”
- “I understood, but it took effort.”
Original practice example
I ordered fifteen tickets.
Original practice example
After the meeting, we need to call the supplier about the delay.
COMPREHENSIBILITY:如果 listener 第一次很難跟上,先別直接判定「accent 太重」。可以一次只改一個變項,例如 meaningful phrase grouping:After the meeting / we need to call the supplier / about the delay.
sentence 裡哪個 information 是 contrast、correction、new information,也會影響 listener 怎麼抓 message。
Original practice example
We need the BLUE folder, not the BLACK one.
Original practice example
I’ll send the report tomorrow.
Repair Priority Lab:這個差異要不要先修?
先自己判斷,再展開答案。下面的 Priority 1 / Priority 2 / Optional 是本文的實用 triage,不是研究驗證的分數、cutoff 或所有 learner 都必須照著走的固定 hierarchy。
情境 A:你每次說 fifteen,listener 在不同句子裡都常寫成 fifty
Priority 1 — intelligibility。 Meaning 已經變了。下一步是測試 number pattern、stress / vowel / final consonant 等可能來源,一次只改一項,不要一開始就說「整個 accent 有問題」。
情境 B:三個 listener 都第一次就懂,只說「聽得出來有 Mandarin accent」
Optional for communication。 如果你的目標是 intelligibility,沒有 evidence 顯示這個差異現在造成 communication cost。你仍可因個人偏好練 accent,但 priority 不必自動最高。
情境 C:listener 最後都懂,但長句常要 replay 兩次
Priority 2 — comprehensibility。 先測 phrase grouping、prominence、pace,再測 individual sounds。不要一次改全部,否則你不知道哪個 repair 有效。
情境 D:你說 BLUE, not BLACK,但 listener 沒抓到哪個才是正確選項
Priority 1 — message contrast。
Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| My pronunciation is very heavy. | 不自然/非慣用 | 大意可猜,但 heavy 通常不是直接修飾 pronunciation 的自然說法。 | 我的口音很明顯。 | I have a strong accent. | 如果你其實想說「很難懂」,更精準的是 My pronunciation is hard to understand.;兩者不是同一件事。 |
| I want to sound native. | 文法成立,但意思不同 | 你真的想追求 native-like accent。 | 我想讓別人更容易聽懂。 | I want to be easier to understand. | 原句完全可以是個人目標;只是不等於 intelligibility goal。 |
最後的 transfer test:別只把同一句練到完美
如果你修了 fifteen / fifty、某個 consonant、sentence stress 或 phrase grouping,最後一定要換新句子再測。否則你可能只是把一個 recording 背熟,不是把 pronunciation pattern 帶進 spontaneous speech。
- HEAR:聽自己的 recording 和 reference。
- CHECK:listener 實際聽到什麼?需要多少 effort?
- CLASSIFY:intelligibility、comprehensibility,還是 accent-only?
