Do you want to come on Friday? 本当はNO。

  1. DECIDE:true no / not yet / conditional yes
  3. BOUND:必要なら短いreason/constraintを一つ
  4. OFFER:genuine alternative

true noなのに Maybe...

StateWhat it meansUseful direction
TRUE NO答えはもうnoclear decline

No thanks. I’m fine. Please and thank you でも、No, thanks. / No, thank you.

  • No, thanks. I’m fine.
  • Thanks for asking, but I can’t make it on Friday.
  • I’m afraid I can’t help with that today.
  • I’d rather not, if you don’t mind.

Cambridgeのwould ratherでは、I’d rather not がsuggestion/requestへのshort noとして使われます。

Too vague:

Maybe… I’m not sure… I have a lot going on…

Clear:

Thanks for asking, but I can’t make it on Friday. I already have plans.

OFFER:alternative

Maybe next time.

Alternative
SituationBetter response
OKI can’t do Friday, but Saturday works for me.
Thanks, but I’ll pass.
I can’t help today, but I can take a look tomorrow.

  • I can’t this time, but thanks for asking.
  • I’d rather not, but thank you.
  • No, thanks. I’m going to pass.

Original practice example

Thanks for asking, but I can’t make it on Friday.

Invitationへのclear no。

Original practice example

I’d rather not, if you don’t mind.

suggestion/requestへのsoft but clear refusal。

Original practice example

I can’t help today, but I can take a look tomorrow.

Original practice example

No, thanks. I’m fine.

food/drink/extra itemを断る場面。

Listener interpretationIntentNatural alternativeContext note
I’d rather to stay home.wrong家にいたい意味は分かりますが、would ratherの後ろにtoは置きません。
断るNo, thank you.
I refuse your invitation.unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic非常に明確でformal/forcefulなrefusalに聞こえます。 Thanks for inviting me, but I can’t make it.refuse自体は正しいverbですが、ordinary invitationでは強く聞こえやすいです。
I can’t this time, but thanks for asking.

Final drill:fake “maybe” を削る

DECIDE → DECLINE → BOUND → OFFER → CLOSE

NOを先に、reasonはshortに、alternativeはtruthfulに。
