Audacity for Pronunciation Practice: Record, Loop, Slow Down, and Compare One Phrase

Build a one-phrase Audacity pronunciation loop: record, loop, slow without changing pitch, compare one audible feature, and rerecord at normal speed.

The short answer

Put one lawful model phrase on one track, record your take on another, loop only the phrase, use pitch-preserving slowdown if needed, compare one audible feature, rerecord once, then return to normal speed.

If your Audacity project has more tracks than your pronunciation has improved, something went sideways. You need one phrase, one difference, two takes—not a podcast production schedule.

Choose one target before you press Record:

Your target

If you want to choose three, choose the one that most often changes what listeners hear. Precision comes from a smaller task, not a larger waveform.

Start with audio you are allowed to use

Use your own recording, a teacher/friend’s recording shared for practice, a public-domain or appropriately licensed file, or another local model you are authorized to use. Audacity can technically record computer playback, but its own computer-playback tutorial warns that copyright or website restrictions may prevent recording or distribution and says to check first.

This guide therefore does not teach you to capture subscription or streaming audio as a workaround. If the model is not lawful to copy locally, use another model or practise it in place on the service where you legitimately have access.

Build the two-track lab in Audacity 3.7.8

As of August 29, 2026, Audacity’s current stable version is 3.7.8; Audacity 4 is still listed separately as prerelease. For a voice take, current Audacity support has you select the recording device in Audio Setup and use the Record control.

  1. Import or record your lawful model on track A.
  2. Keep only the short phrase you need in view; you do not have to destructively trim it.
  3. Record your first attempt on track B.
  4. Use headphones if needed to keep model playback out of the microphone.
  5. Label the learner track mentally or literally as Take A.

Do not clean every breath, normalize everything, or remove every pause. This is pronunciation practice, not forensic restoration.

Loop the phrase until you can hear the target—not until you hate the phrase

Select only the phrase or sub-phrase you need. Audacity’s Looping controls can set the loop to a selection so that the chosen region repeats.

For a phrase such as Could you send it again?, you might loop only send it if linking is the target, or the full phrase if sentence stress is the target. The loop length should match the question.

Listen three ways:

  1. Model only.
  2. Take A only.
  3. Model, then Take A immediately after it.

Ask one sentence: “What audible difference keeps repeating?”

Slow it down without accidentally teaching yourself a lower voice

Here is the control that trips people up: Audacity’s Play-at-Speed toolbar can slow playback, but the official manual says it also affects pitch. That can be fine for navigation or transcription, but it is a poor model when you are trying to preserve the phrase’s pitch relationships.

For a pitch-preserving slowdown, current Audacity support documents time stretching and Change Tempo. Use a modest slowdown—just enough to expose the feature you cannot yet hear. Extreme stretching can introduce artifacts and can make the rhythm itself misleading.

Right control or wrong control?

Need slower audio while keeping pitch broadly stable? Use pitch-preserving time stretch or Change Tempo.

Using Play-at-Speed? Remember that pitch changes with it; do not copy that altered voice as your pronunciation model.

Using Change Speed and Pitch? As the name says, it changes both; that is not the target here.

Then climb back toward normal speed. Slow motion is where you inspect the move; normal speed is where the move has to live.

The A/B phrase lab: compare one feature, not the whole waveform

A waveform is useful for finding boundaries and spotting big level differences. It does not tell you, by shape alone, that your pronunciation is correct. A louder recording also does not mean a clearer vowel or better stress.

Good observations are concrete: “My stressed word is later,” “I pronounce both words equally strongly,” “My /t/ blocks the link,” “My rise starts on the wrong word.” “My waveform looks different” is not yet a pronunciation observation.

Record Take B before you edit anything else

Make the one change you wrote down and record the phrase again. Then compare Model → Take A → Take B.

No percentage is needed. The useful result is the next action.

Use natural English for the repair, too

Original: “I need to say it more fast.”

Classification: wrong in standard English for this meaning.

Listener interpretation: the intended comparative speed meaning is clear but the form is nonstandard.

Learner intent: increase speaking speed.

Natural alternative: “I need to say it faster.”

Context note: useful pronunciation collocations include slow the audio down, speed it up, loop the phrase, record another take, stress this word, and link these two words.

Four signs Audacity has stopped helping

Your sample is too long

If you cannot name one repeated difference, cut the practice unit down conceptually to one phrase or sub-phrase.

You slowed it until the rhythm became a different animal

Use slowdown to reveal detail, then move back toward normal speed. Do not make the stretched version your final rhythm model.

You are comparing loudness or waveform shape

Match recording levels enough to listen comfortably, then return to the audible pronunciation feature.

You are editing instead of speaking

If you have spent longer on fades, breath deletion or file naming than on Take B, you may have changed hobbies. Record the next take.

If the line already lives on a supported video page, you may not need to extract it

The final test happens with Audacity out of the way

Mute or stop the model. Say the phrase once at normal speed from memory. Then put the same feature into a new sentence.

If the target survives without the loop, the slowed audio, and the waveform, the lab did its job. One phrase. One difference. Two takes. Then back to speaking.

Two practical Audacity questions

Why did slowing the phrase make the speaker sound deeper?

You probably used a speed control that changes pitch, such as Play-at-Speed. Use a pitch-preserving time-stretch method or Change Tempo when stable pitch matters for the model.

Can Audacity record audio playing from a website?

Technically, Audacity supports computer-playback recording on some systems. But technical capability is not permission. Audacity’s own manual warns that copyright or website restrictions may prevent recording or distribution. This guide intentionally does not teach streaming capture; use material you are authorized to copy or practise it in place.
