There is no official CEFR playback-speed chart. Use level bands as starting points, not rules: roughly 0.75–0.9× for difficult A1–A2 material, 0.85–1× for B1, 0.9–1× for B2, and mostly 1× for C1–C2.

The important part is what happens next: Slow → Notice → Restore. Slow a hard passage enough to discover what you are missing, then replay the same passage closer to normal speed. Otherwise listening practice can quietly become training for slow-motion speech.

Why there is no magic “best” speed

Recent research supports the basic idea that playback speed and language proficiency interact. A 2025 study of 168 multilingual English learners compared 0.75×, 1×, and 1.25× playback and found statistically significant differences in listening comprehension associated with both speed and proficiency. A related study in System also found that playback speed, captions, proficiency, and question difficulty interact.

That is useful evidence for adjusting speed. It is not evidence for saying “all B1 learners belong at 0.85×.” The studies used particular learners, videos, questions, and speed conditions. Your clip may contain fast slang, clear narration, an unfamiliar accent, or six words you simply do not know.

Speed is a dial, not a level badge.

A1–A2: slow enough to hear structure, not so much that speech melts

If normal-speed speech feels like one long sound, a temporary drop toward 0.75–0.9× can make familiar words, endings, and phrase boundaries easier to notice.

But do not make the rescue speed the final pass. Try this:

  1. Listen once at 1× without reading.
  2. Replay at your rescue speed.
  3. Check the subtitle or transcript only where needed.
  4. Replay the same passage at 0.9× or 1×.

1× is not a moral achievement. The goal is simply to keep a bridge back to ordinary speech.

B1: use small slowdowns for specific breakdowns

At B1, a whole video at 0.75× is often less useful than taking one dense sentence down slightly, understanding it, and restoring the speed.

A practical starting zone is roughly 0.85–1×. If 0.9× suddenly makes a sentence clear, ask why. Did you finally hear a reduced word? Did two words connect? Or did the extra time simply let you retrieve vocabulary you already knew?

That answer tells you what to practise next.

B2: stop slowing the easy parts

B2 learners often understand the story but lose fast jokes, overlapping dialogue, or compact idioms. That does not mean the entire episode needs to run slowly.

Keep most playback around 0.9–1×. Drop speed only around the line that failed, solve it, then replay the line at normal speed. The more local the slowdown becomes, the more your practice resembles real listening.

C1–C2: normal speed should be home base

Advanced listening is increasingly about nuance, timing, stance, humor, and what a speaker implies rather than merely identifying words. Those cues live in rhythm and timing too, so heavy slowing can change the experience you are trying to master.

Use 1× as home base. Faster playback such as 1.25× can be an occasional challenge, but it is not automatically “advanced.” In the research above, faster playback made some comprehension tasks harder. Speeding up for ego is still speeding up for ego.

Before you slow down, ask why 1× failed

I do not know several important words

Speed is not the main problem. Learn or infer the blocking vocabulary, then listen again. A word you do not know remains unknown at 0.75×—it merely arrives more politely.

I know the words on paper but cannot hear them

A temporary slowdown can help. Listen for connected speech, reductions, weak syllables, and word boundaries, then replay the same line at normal speed.

I understand immediately when I slow slightly

Your processing time may be the bottleneck. Use the slower pass as a scaffold, then climb one step toward 1× on the same material.

I still do not understand at slow speed

Stop lowering speed. Check vocabulary, grammar, context, subtitle accuracy, accent familiarity, or whether the material is simply too difficult right now.

The three-pass speed ladder

Use one 20–40 second passage. Do not change the clip between passes.

  1. Normal pass: listen at 1× and mark the exact point where meaning breaks.
  2. Notice pass: use your rescue speed and identify what becomes audible or understandable.
  3. Restore pass: replay at a faster setting—ideally back toward 1×—without immediately reading.

Did the slowdown actually teach you anything?

Use the platform control, but keep the method portable

YouTube currently lets viewers change playback speed on computers and mobile devices, and on many smart-TV and streaming-device contexts, although the control is not available on every TV/device. Other video players expose different speed steps.

Do not build your listening method around one platform’s exact numbers. The transferable idea is simpler: lower the speed enough to notice the breakdown, then restore it.

Borrow slow speed; do not move there

Beginners may need more frequent rescue passes. Intermediate learners can make them shorter and more local. Advanced learners should usually keep normal speed as home base.

But level is only the starting guess. The real test is the same passage: if slowing helps you notice something and you can then hear more when you restore the speed, the adjustment did its job.
