Elision means a sound disappears from a spoken form; assimilation means a sound changes because a neighboring sound influences it.
If the transcript says five consonants and your ears swear they heard four and a half, don’t just hit replay. Ask one better question: did a sound disappear, or did it change shape? That separates elision from assimilation—and gives you something concrete to listen for.

These are connected-speech tendencies, not switches every speaker flips every time. Context, accent, emphasis, and speaking style matter.
Elision: when a sound really disappears
In connected speech, deletion—also called elision—can remove consonants or vowels. A useful consonant example is rest stop: the cluster at the boundary can simplify so that one /t/ does not get its own separate realization.

That does not mean you should delete every difficult consonant like you are being charged by the phoneme. Your first job is recognition: notice when a sound expected from the careful form has no separate audible event.
What should your ear listen for?
- Say the careful form slowly.
- Listen to the connected version.
- Ask: “Is the target sound actually present?”
- If it is absent, elision is a strong candidate.
Be cautious: “I barely heard it” is not the same as “it was definitely deleted.” If you are unsure, keep the question mark.

Assimilation: when the sound stays but changes shape
Assimilation is different. One sound takes on some of the characteristics of a neighboring sound. In natural connected speech, that can change place of articulation, manner, or voicing.
Take and then. In a connected realization, the boundary consonants can influence one another so the sequence sounds more like an nen. The point for this lesson is not that a sound simply vanished: a consonant has changed under pressure from its neighbor.

Feel the change
- Say and slowly and feel the final consonant.
- Say then and notice where the tongue prepares for the next sound.
- Say and then more fluidly several times.
- Notice whether the boundary becomes less like two isolated dictionary forms.
Do not force a theatrical reduced version. The goal is to notice the influence, not to perform “fast English.”
Elision vs assimilation: use this two-question diagnostic
- Did the target sound disappear? If yes, elision is a candidate.
- If a sound remains, did it change toward a neighbor? If yes, assimilation is a candidate.
- If you cannot establish either one, stop. It may be another connected-speech process—or you may simply need a cleaner listen.
You do not get extra pronunciation points for confidently diagnosing the wrong phenomenon.

Choose before opening the answer.
rest stop is produced with one boundary /t/ absent. DELETE, CHANGE, or NEITHER?
DELETE. A target consonant is absent: elision.
and then is produced with a boundary consonant changing toward its neighbor. DELETE, CHANGE, or NEITHER?
CHANGE. A consonant remains but changes: assimilation.
A /t/ is weak but still has its own consonant cue. DELETE, CHANGE, or NEITHER?
NEITHER, based on the information given. Weak does not automatically mean deleted.
A phrase is pronounced just like its careful form. DELETE, CHANGE, or NEITHER?
NEITHER. Connected speech does not require a reduction in every environment.
You cannot decide what happened. DELETE, CHANGE, or NEITHER?
NEITHER—yet. Uncertainty is more accurate than inventing a diagnosis.
Production practice: don’t perform “fast English”
The point is not to manufacture reductions. Practise control.
Elision ladder
- Say rest stop carefully.
- Say it in a short sentence at comfortable speed.
- Notice whether the consonant cluster simplifies naturally.
- Switch back to the careful form deliberately.
Assimilation ladder
- Say and.
- Say then.
- Say and then slowly, then more fluidly.
- Notice any change at the boundary rather than forcing one.

- Listen with no text. Mark the compressed spot.
- Predict: disappeared, changed, or unsure?
- Check the subtitle or transcript. Identify the careful sounds you expected.
- Replay. Slow only slightly if needed, then return toward normal speed.
- Say the line. First clearly, then more connected.
