French Nasal Vowels: Hear the Differences and Pronounce Them Without Adding N or M
Hear French nasal vowels, separate the main vowel contrasts, learn when written n/m is a nasal cue or a consonant, and transfer the sounds into real phrases.
A French nasal vowel is still a vowel: hear its vowel quality first, add nasal resonance, and in the common nasal-vowel spelling pattern do not deliberately release the following n or m as a separate consonant.
If bon keeps coming out like “bohn,” your nose may not be the problem. The n escaped. French nasal-vowel practice gets much easier when you separate two jobs: hear the vowel color first, then check whether the spelling made you leak an extra consonant.
Start with two checks: COLOR and LEAK

Traditional descriptions of French also include a fourth nasal category, /œ̃/, in words such as brun. But French does not hand every speaker the same four-box inventory. Research on northern and Parisian French documents a widespread /œ̃/–/ɛ̃/ merger, so many speakers do not maintain the traditional brun/brin contrast. Choose a model speaker or variety and learn the contrasts that model actually uses. Build an ear map with banc, bon, bain
Do not begin by turning the “nose knob” to eleven. Nasality is only one part of the sound. The vowel category still has to be different.
For a common contemporary northern-France/Paris-oriented learning model, these three words make a useful anchor set because the initial b stays similar while the nasal vowel changes:

These IPA symbols are shorthand, not a command to make one mathematically exact mouth shape. Common spelling anchors—not guarantees
French spelling gives useful clues, but the letters do not create one exceptionless sound formula. These are practical starting patterns for the same France-oriented model:

The B-anchor switch
Say banc → bon → bain slowly, then reverse it. Keep the initial b similar. Your job is to change the vowel category without adding a final consonant just to make the words feel different.
- Did bon stay clearly different from banc?
- Did bain stay a separate category for the model you are copying?
- Did any word acquire a little n-like tail at the end?
If the last answer is yes, good: you found a specific error. That is much more useful than “my French sounds wrong.”
Nasal resonance is part of the vowel, not an extra consonant
In an oral vowel, airflow is mainly through the mouth. In a nasal vowel, nasal resonance joins the oral sound. The University of Texas Français interactif lesson on French nasal vowels makes the learner-facing contrast very clearly: in its standard teaching model, the written n or m after a nasal vowel is not separately pronounced the way an English nasal consonant often is.
That does not mean “close your mouth and hum.” Keep the vowel alive. If you close into a full [n] or [m] at the end, you have changed the segment sequence.
You can briefly touch the side of your nose while sustaining a model vowel to notice vibration, but do not turn that into a pass/fail gadget. Resonance differs by sound and speaker. The real test is whether the vowel category and the word contrast match the model you are learning.
The N/M Gate: nasal vowel or audible consonant?
French spelling is the trap here. Sometimes visible n or m helps signal a nasal vowel. Sometimes the consonant comes back as a consonant.
A strong practical pattern is this: when the relevant n/m closes the sequence at the end of a word or before another consonant, the preceding vowel is commonly nasalized and that n/m is not separately released. When a following vowel makes the consonant part of the next pronounced sequence, the preceding vowel is commonly oral and the consonant is audible. Doubled nn/mm also needs separate treatment. French has lexical and morphological details, so use this as a decision gate—not an excuse to stop checking real words.
Choose before you reveal
For each pair, decide which side has a NASAL VOWEL and which side has an ORAL VOWEL + AUDIBLE N.
bon / bonne

bon uses the nasal-vowel target in the common model; do not deliberately release the final written n. In bonne, the vowel is oral and the /n/ is audible. The spelling change is doing grammatical work too: bon and bonne are masculine and feminine adjective forms in ordinary uses.
fin / fine

fin uses the front nasal-vowel category in the common model. In fine, the vowel is oral and /n/ is pronounced. The University of Texas practice set explicitly contrasts fine/fin.
certain / certaine

certain ends with a nasal-vowel target; certaine has an oral vowel plus an audible consonant. Again, this is a sound contrast tied to a real grammatical-form contrast, not two decorative pronunciations of the same form.
aucun / aucune

In a traditional four-category model, aucun contains /œ̃/; many northern-France speakers instead use their merged /ɛ̃/-type category. aucune has an oral vowel plus audible /n/. Copy the front nasal category your model speaker actually uses rather than manufacturing a distinction they do not make.
If you classified the spellings correctly but still pronounce an extra consonant, stop rereading the rule. Your bottleneck is motor control. Use the repair lab next.
Consonant-leak repair: stop the N where it does not belong
The spelling is shouting N at your eyeballs. Your mouth does not have to obey it literally.

One physical repair
- Say bonne once and notice the real tongue closure for /n/.
- Say bon and deliberately stop before making that same closure. Keep the vowel resonant instead of replacing its ending with /n/.
- Alternate bon / bonne / bon / bonne slowly.
- Repeat with fin / fine.
The contrast is the point. You are learning when the consonant exists, not trying to erase the letter n from French forever.
Three or four nasal vowels? Use un bon vin blanc as a speaker map
Un bon vin blanc (“a good white wine”) is a useful nasal-vowel practice phrase because it packs several nasal spellings into four words.
But use it honestly. A traditional four-vowel analysis can assign four categories across the phrase. Many northern-France speakers, however, merge the traditional vowel of un with the /ɛ̃/ category heard in vin. Cambridge’s current account of supralocal/northern French explicitly describes this /œ̃/–/ɛ̃/ merger.
So do not ask, “Did I produce four different vowels because the worksheet has four boxes?” Ask:
- Which contrasts does this speaker make?
- Does bon remain distinct from vin and blanc?
- Does un differ from vin for this model, or are they merged?
- Did I add any separate n/m just because I saw the letters?
That is a better ear-training task than arguing with a real speaker because a museum chart promised you four boxes.
Move from the vowel to a French phrase
Once an isolated word works, do not collect another twenty isolated words. Make the sound survive a sentence.
Français interactif includes phrase practice such as:
- Il chante une chanson marrante.
- C’est un roman plein de violence.
Use a three-pass transfer:
- Map: identify the nasal-vowel targets in the written phrase before speaking.
- Say: produce the phrase slowly enough to keep each target distinct, but do not stop between syllables to prepare your nose.
- Retrieve: look away and say the complete phrase again. Check COLOR first, LEAK second.
If one target collapses, repair that word and immediately put it back into the phrase. The goal is not to become champion of isolated /ɔ̃/. The goal is to say French while /ɔ̃/ behaves itself.
Make one real French speaker your referee
This matters more for nasal vowels than collecting ten mouth diagrams, because the model itself can vary.
- Choose one short French video line containing one or two nasal-vowel targets.
- Before hearing it again, use the subtitle spelling to predict the likely category and whether n/m should be a separate consonant.
- Listen once without speaking. Then replay the same speaker; lower speed slightly only if perception is the problem.
- Say the complete line. Check two things: did the vowel category survive, and did an unwanted consonant leak out?

Copy a model, not one universal mouth diagram
The useful learner target is consistency, not pretending French stops varying at the border of your textbook.
The traditional standard description distinguishes four nasal vowel phonemes. Contemporary supralocal and northern-France speech commonly has three because /œ̃/ and /ɛ̃/ have merged. Parisian vowel qualities are also changing. Separately, phonetic research comparing Northern Metropolitan French and Quebec French documents different articulatory behavior.
That does not mean “anything goes.” It means:
- choose a speaker or variety relevant to your goal;
- learn the contrasts that model actually preserves;
- use mouth cues as setup aids, not universal coordinates;
- do not deliberately attach an n/m merely because the spelling contains one.
Some French varieties can show consonantal behavior that differs from a classroom France-standard target. Hear that as part of the model rather than retroactively declaring every speaker wrong—or using variation as permission to ignore the contrast entirely.
Formality does not flip the nasal-vowel rule
Register changes the phrase you choose, not whether a written bon suddenly needs a separate final n just because the conversation is formal. Compare a casual C’est bon. with a more measured C’est un bon point.: the word-level target for bon stays tied to the pronunciation model and phonological context, not to politeness.
Likewise, bon and bonne are not casual/formal variants. They are different grammatical forms. Do not use pronunciation practice to blur a real morphology difference.
Three questions that stop the common overcorrections
Does French have three or four nasal vowels?
Both numbers can describe useful models. A traditional prescriptive system distinguishes four. Most northern-France speakers merge the traditional /œ̃/ category with /ɛ̃/, giving a three-category system there. Other French varieties can preserve different distinctions or realize the vowels differently. Pick a relevant model instead of treating one number as universal.
Is n or m always silent after a French nasal vowel?
No. In the common nasal-vowel spelling pattern, n/m may act as part of the nasalization cue rather than a separately pronounced consonant. But when spelling and syllable structure put the consonant before a following vowel—or in other contexts—the consonant can be audible. Use the N/M Gate above, then verify unfamiliar words with a reliable model.
Should I pinch my nose to check a nasal vowel?
Pinching your nose can demonstrate that nasal resonance is involved because it changes the sound, but it is not a pronunciation score. It cannot tell you whether you chose /ɑ̃/, /ɔ̃/, or /ɛ̃/ correctly, whether your model preserves /œ̃/, or whether an unwanted consonant leaked out.
Stop asking “Am I nasal enough?”
That question is too vague to repair anything.
Ask two better ones: Which vowel category did I hear? And did a consonant escape?
If banc, bon, bain stay distinct for your model and bon no longer grows an accidental n while bonne gets its consonant back, you have moved from “French nose sound” to actual control. That is the skill worth carrying into the next real line you hear.
