Lecture Signposting Language in English

Learn lecture signposting language for topic shifts, definitions, digressions, emphasis and returns, then practise the signals with real lecture audio.

The short answer

Lecture signposting language helps you hear what an academic speaker is doing next — opening a point, shifting topic, giving an example, emphasizing something, defining a term, digressing, returning, or summarizing.

A lecturer says something interesting, you write it down, and thirty seconds later you realize it was only an example. Meanwhile the main point has moved on. The skill is to build a live map, not a transcript — and to know how to rejoin the route when the signposting is weak.

Start with the function, not a giant connector list:

Lecturers tell you the structure

Listening for structure is not a classroom trick invented to keep highlighters employed. Current English for Academic Purposes courses explicitly train it. For example, Flinders University’s 2026 EAP curriculum includes identifying text structure and signposting language when following an academic lecture or talk.

There is also experimental evidence that signaling can matter. In Euen Hyuk (Sarah) Jung’s academic-lecture study, 80 Korean learners of English heard either a signaled or nonsignaled version; the signaled group recalled more accurate high- and low-level information. That is evidence from one study and one learner population, not a promise that every cue helps every listener equally.

A second experiment, Flowerdew and Tauroza’s study of discourse markers in lecture comprehension, compared a natural lecture extract with a version from which markers such as so, right, well, OK, and now had been removed. The version with the markers was understood better by the learners studied.

The useful lesson is modest: while you listen to content, keep a second question running quietly in the background: What is the lecturer doing with this content?

If the answer changes from “main point” to “example,” or from “side comment” to “back to the argument,” your map should change too.

The signal categories

A long alphabetized list of lecture signposting phrases looks impressive until a real lecturer says right, so… and changes direction without consulting the list.

Academic speakers can signal organization with explicit metadiscourse, ordinary spoken discourse markers, repetition, pauses, and intonation. Susan Thompson’s research on academic lectures argues that text-structuring metadiscourse and intonation both help listeners build a mental map of a talk, while some EAP teaching models can make lecture organization look tidier than it really is.

So learn categories first:

  • Roadmap: what the lecture or section is going to cover.
  • Shift: a new main point, stage, question, or perspective.
  • Support: an example, reason, contrast, demonstration, or evidence under the current point.
  • Importance: the lecturer raises the weight of a point.
  • Definition: a term is linked to a meaning or reformulation.
  • Digression: the lecturer temporarily leaves the main line.
  • Return: the lecturer reconnects with an earlier line.
  • Summary: earlier material is compressed or the section closes.

Spoken signposts are not a writing-connectors list

Written and spoken academic organization overlap, but they are not interchangeable inventories. Crible and Cuenca’s research on discourse markers in speech notes that discourse markers behave differently in speech and writing and that writing-based descriptions can be a poor fit for spoken data.

A recent curriculum makes the teaching distinction visible too: the University of Warwick’s 2025 EAP module separately lists using signposting/discourse markers to follow lecture structure under academic listening and using signposting/cohesive devices to structure texts under academic writing.

That does not mean a word such as however belongs only to writing or so belongs only to speech. It means your lecture strategy should be built from how spoken academic discourse actually works, not from an essay connector sheet with the title changed.

Hear the functions in a real lecture

The examples below come from Open Yale Courses, PSYC 110 Lecture 1, which provides the real lecture, transcript, audio/video, and chapter timings. Listen on the official page before reading the function column closely.

Notice the useful mismatch with a writing-connectors worksheet: the structural work is being done by ordinary spoken English plus context. Your job is not “spot a formal connector.” It is “hear the move.”

Three English traps when you describe lecture structure

Those corrections help you talk accurately about what you heard. They are not a presentation-signposting lesson; this page is about recognizing the lecturer’s moves.

Say the structure in one sentence

Now make the English active. Choose one move you just heard in the Yale lecture — or one from a lecture you are studying — and describe it aloud in one sentence before opening the models. Use a verb that names the structural move: shifted, returned, emphasized, defined, or digressed.

Compare with model sentences
  • “The lecturer shifted from general goals to concrete examples.”
  • “The lecturer returned to the main point after a short digression.”
  • “The lecturer emphasized this point before continuing.”
  • “The lecturer defined the term before using it in the argument.”

Your sentence does not need to match a model. Check only two things: did the verb describe the move accurately, and did the grammar make the relationship clear?

Now use those labels and verbs on the structurally dangerous move: a digression.

Digressions and returns

A digression is dangerous because it can sound interesting enough to become the new main point in your notes.

Imagine a biology lecturer explaining a mechanism, pausing to tell a historical anecdote about how the discovery happened, then quietly returning to the mechanism. If your notes give the anecdote and the mechanism equal hierarchy, the page can become factually full and structurally wrong.

The Warwick EAP listening syllabus explicitly includes identifying main points, supporting details, and digressions. Its Lecture Vocabulary guidance also treats digression and return as lecture functions while warning that real structure may not be neat or predictable.

Use a simple two-step rule:

  • SIDE: when the lecturer signals an aside, keeps the main topic in the background, or starts material that clearly functions as a temporary detour, mark it as a side branch rather than a new top-level heading.
  • BACK: when an earlier term, question, or line of argument resumes, reconnect your notes to that earlier heading.

The return cue may be explicit — a phrase equivalent to “back to…” or “returning to…” — but it may also be carried by repeated key vocabulary, a slide change, a pause, or a change in intonation. You are following the route, not waiting for one magic phrase.

Emphasis markers that predict exam content

They do not reliably predict exam content. They can tell you that the lecturer is marking something as important. That is useful. It is not the same claim.

Katrien Deroey’s corpus research on marking importance in lectures found a range of overt importance markers in British academic lecture data. Many were oriented toward the content or the listener, and the markers typically appeared before the highlighted point.

So phrases built around ideas such as the point, important, remember, notice, or explicit stressing can justify a big ! in your structural map. They tell you, “increase attention here.”

What they do not justify is writing “EXAM” in capital letters as if the lecturer has leaked the paper. Assessment may depend on a syllabus, learning outcomes, official guidance, and the actual exam design. A relevance marker is evidence of lecturer-marked importance, not a verified assessment promise.

A better response is:

  • mark the point !;
  • capture the claim accurately;
  • note how it connects to the surrounding argument;
  • check official assessment guidance separately when you study.

That keeps the signal useful without asking it to do fortune-telling.

Markers that signal a definition

Definitions are high-value moments because one short sentence can unlock the next ten minutes of a lecture. But spoken definitions do not always arrive in dictionary clothing.

Listen for functions such as:

  • term → meaning: “X means…” or “X refers to…”;
  • speaker’s intended meaning: “By X, I mean…”;
  • reformulation: “in other words…” or “that is…”;
  • contrastive definition: explaining what X is by separating it from a nearby concept;
  • example-led definition: the lecturer gives a concrete case and then names the category.

In the same Open Yale psychology lecture, the lecturer introduces the term cognitive and explains it as a computational approach to studying the mind. You do not need to copy the whole surrounding paragraph. Your useful note is the relationship:

DEF: cognitive → computational approach to studying the mind

Then rejoin the argument. The definition is a bridge, not a new country.

When a lecturer signposts badly

Some lecturers give you a beautiful verbal map. Others give you a compass, two suspicious footprints, and confidence.

That variation is real. Hilary Nesi’s research on lecture discourse argues that authentic lecture delivery varies with audience expectations, discipline, and local or institutional culture. Thompson’s lecture-discourse research also shows that organization can be signaled through intonation as well as explicit text-structuring language.

When the verbal road signs disappear, use this recovery ladder. Check each step only when you have tried it:

This is the difference between losing a sentence and losing the lecture. You are allowed to abandon a few paving stones if you can still find the road.

A listening-for-structure drill

Now use real lecture material. The official Open Yale PSYC 110 Lecture 1 page gives you the video/audio, transcript, and chapter times. Do the listening before opening the answers below.

  1. Start Chapter 2 at 10:03. Do not read the transcript yet.
  2. Write only structural labels: ROADMAP, SHIFT, EX, DEF, !, SIDE, BACK, or SUMMARY.
  3. Continue through the transition into Chapter 3 at 13:08.
  4. Before checking anything, write what the lecturer is doing structurally near the start of Chapter 2 and at the start of Chapter 3.
  5. Listen a second time and use the transcript only to check the wording you missed.
  6. Listen once more and try to predict the next function before the lecturer completes the move.
Check the Chapter 2 roadmap

Near the start of Chapter 2, the lecturer overtly states the broad goal of the course and then organizes psychology into several directions or sub-areas. Your structural label can be ROADMAP. The win is recognizing that a map is being announced before trying to capture every sub-area.

Check the Chapter 3 transition

At 13:08, the lecture moves from broad framing into examples of the material the course will cover. SHIFT is the key label; EX can follow as the concrete examples begin. If you wrote down the content but missed that hierarchy change, replay the transition once.

Check the definition moment

In Chapter 2, listen for the explanation of the term cognitive. Mark DEF and capture term → meaning. Do not turn the definition into a paragraph unless the surrounding detail is needed for the argument.

If your answer was “I heard the words but I did not know the function”

That is exactly what this drill is designed to expose. Replay the boundary and force yourself to choose one structural label. A wrong label is more useful than no judgment: you can compare “new main point” with “example” or “definition” and listen again for what comes next.

The five-move margin challenge

In your next lecture or recorded academic talk, spend the first five structural cues writing only five labels from the map. Then ask: Could I reconstruct the route from these labels alone?

If yes, your notes are starting to show hierarchy. If no, do not add more phrases to memorize. Revisit the functions you confused.

You do not need to hear every word to know where you are. The more useful target is structural control: hear a roadmap, notice a shift, indent an example, mark a definition, protect the main line during a digression, and reconnect when the lecturer returns. That is how a wall of sentences becomes a live map.
