Roku Closed Captions Keep Reappearing? Fix Captions Mode or the App Setting

Roku captions keep coming back? Set Captions mode to Off, then test another app to find whether Roku, playback, or the app/profile is turning them on.

The short answer

Start here: go to Settings → Accessibility (or Captions) → Captions modeOff. If captions still return, test another app—Roku says some services manage captions inside the app and can ignore the Roku device setting.

You may be turning off the right captions in the wrong place. Roku can remember a system or playback caption mode, while some streaming apps keep their own caption preference.

Who keeps turning them back on?

First fix Roku Captions mode

Roku’s current caption guide documents these system modes:

  • Off: captions do not appear through the Roku caption mode.
  • On always: captions appear whenever available for services that use Roku’s caption setting.
  • On replay: captions appear after you press Replay when the content supports instant replay.
  • On mute: captions appear when volume is muted; Roku notes this option is not available on all devices.

If captions seem to return only after a particular action, On replay and On mute can explain the behavior without any bug at all.

Do the 60-second cross-app test

Captions return across multiple apps

Recheck Roku Captions mode and the in-playback caption choice. A system or retained playback state is the better first suspect than one app.

Captions return in only one app

Stop changing the Roku system setting. Roku explicitly says some apps use their own caption system. Open that app’s subtitle/caption settings and check the active profile.

Captions return only after Replay

Check whether Captions mode is set to On replay. That behavior is intentional when supported.

Captions return only when muted

Check On mute if your Roku device offers it. Roku says this mode is not available on every device.

Check the in-playback Star menu

For apps that use Roku caption settings, Roku says you can often press the Star button during playback, choose Closed captioning, and select the mode. Roku also says a caption choice changed during playback can be retained for future programs.

That explains a common “but I already turned it off” moment: the earlier playback choice may itself have been remembered.

If one app keeps doing it, use the app’s setting

Roku’s current troubleshooting guide says some streaming apps manage captions themselves and skip the Roku device setting. If changing Roku Captions mode does nothing in one app while other apps behave normally, use that app’s own caption controls.

Also confirm the active profile. Roku notes that some caption or language preferences can be saved per profile, so a profile change can look like a setting reset.

Do not reinstall the app first

If only one app is affected, broader app troubleshooting may eventually make sense. But first prove that the issue belongs to that app. If captions recur everywhere, reinstalling one app is solving the wrong layer.

Roku’s own troubleshooting flow recommends isolating the feature by show, app, and device before moving into general restart, update, or reinstall steps.

The setting that sticks is the setting you need to change

Ask one question: who keeps turning them back on? Roku system Captions mode? The in-playback state? The app? The profile?

Set Roku mode to Off, test two apps, and follow the result. Once you find the owner, leave the other layers alone.

After the playback problem is fixed, see this media-based language learning guide for the broader learning method.
