Sports commentary becomes easier when the visible play predicts the language family: track SETUP → ACTION → RESULT → RESET, then catch WHO, ACTION, and RESULT first.
If you already saw the shot miss, you do not need to decode twelve words to discover that the shot missed. Let the picture do the prediction work first.

Then use an audio hierarchy: WHO → ACTION → RESULT first. Add direction/location and evaluation only if you have processing space left.
The picture gets there first
Research on second-language audiovisual learning supports using visual context as a comprehension scaffold. Sport gives you an especially useful version of that advantage: you often know the event before you have processed the commentator’s complete sentence.
Mute a short play and ask: What language family is likely next? You do not need the exact wording. If a footballer cuts inside and shoots, likely language families include shooting, direction, save/miss/goal, and evaluation. If a tennis player serves and the receiver never touches the ball, serve/result language becomes highly probable.
That prediction narrows the listening job before the audio arrives.
Catch anchors, not the whole burst

If you catch “Lopez — drives — fouled,” you already have the skeleton of the play. Missing an adjective such as brilliant, awkward, or ambitious is not a listening emergency.
Do not conduct an archaeological dig on an adjective while the counterattack continues.
Adapt the event loop to the sport
Commentary conventions vary by sport, broadcaster, region, and language, so there is no universal script. The event logic is more portable than any one glossary.

Use the verbs that genuinely recur in the sport you watch. You do not need to study every sport at once.
Commentary can be compressed; your retell does not need to be
Live commentary may arrive as names, short clauses, fragments, numbers, and evaluation packed around the action. Do not copy that compression blindly into your own speech.
Illustrative fast burst: “Mendez—inside—shoots—saved!”
Your ordinary retell: “Mendez moved inside and took a shot, but the goalkeeper saved it.”
The commentator’s style is valid for the live context. Your fuller sentence is better for practising clear production.
Mute it first: predict the language family
For each illustrative event, decide what language is likely before opening the reveal. There is no single required commentary sentence.
A football attacker receives the ball near the box, turns, shoots, and the ball goes wide.
Likely anchors: WHO + turn/shot + wide/misses. Plausible phrases include “turns and shoots,” “drags it wide,” or simply “the shot goes wide,” depending on broadcaster and region.
A basketball player drives toward the basket, contact occurs, and the referee signals a foul.
Likely anchors: WHO + drives + foul/contact. The commentary may also mention free throws or the defender.
A tennis player serves; the receiver cannot touch the ball.
Likely language family: serve + ace / untouched serve + point result.
A racing driver closes the gap, moves alongside, and completes a pass.
Likely anchors: WHO + attacks/overtakes + position gained. Exact terminology varies by motorsport and broadcaster.
A goalkeeper blocks a shot and the ball remains in play.
Likely anchors: shot + save + rebound/loose ball / play continues. Do not stop listening at the save; the RESET may begin immediately.
One-sentence play-by-play: turn comprehension into output
After each play, say one sentence using this scaffold:
WHO + ACTION + RESULT (+ optional evaluation).
Examples:
- “Chen drove to the basket and drew a foul.”
- “The serve went untouched for an ace.”
- “Ramos took the shot, but it went wide.”

- Choose a sport you already understand.
- Watch two minutes and identify five complete plays/events.
- For each one, note only WHO + ACTION + RESULT.
- Do not stop because you missed evaluation language.
- After the play, retell it in one clear sentence.
If you can see the event but cannot name the action, that verb family is your vocabulary target. If you know the action but cannot catch it at speed, that is a listening target. Different problem, different repair.
