Đừng cố đọc ý nghĩ của speaker. Pause trước lượt nói tiếp theo, đoán conversational move, nói câu của bạn, rồi mới nghe source để đối chiếu.

Nếu source nói khác wording mà câu của bạn vẫn fit conversation, đó không phải fail. Bạn đang luyện tham gia cuộc nói chuyện—not audition để trở thành subtitle file.

Pause → Name the Move → Say Your Turn → Hear → Compare → Reuse

  1. Pause: dừng ngay trước speaker turn tiếp theo.
  2. Name the Move: turn này cần answer, accept, refuse, clarify, explain, disagree, propose alternative hay ask back?
  3. Say Your Turn: trả lời thành tiếng trước khi source bật lại.
  4. Hear: nghe actual next turn.
  5. Compare: compare job, core meaning, certainty/politeness và wording.
  6. Reuse: lấy đúng một phrase hoặc feature useful từ source rồi answer lại.

Predict the job, not the script.

Prediction là listening strategy—nhưng bạn có thể biến nó thành speaking

British Council khuyên learner pause recorded material và predict điều gì có thể xảy ra hoặc được nói tiếp theo. TeachingEnglish cũng giải thích rằng prediction tạo một reason to listen và có thể liên quan cả content lẫn language.

Ở đây ta thêm một twist: prediction phải đi qua mouth trước khi source reveal.

Trước khi nghĩ câu, hãy nghĩ job

  • ANSWER: trả lời thông tin.
  • ACCEPT / REFUSE: phản hồi offer hoặc invitation.
  • CLARIFY: hỏi lại hoặc sửa misunderstanding.
  • EXPLAIN: đưa reason/context.
  • DISAGREE: phản hồi khác quan điểm.
  • PROPOSE: đưa alternative.
  • ASK BACK: giữ conversation đi tiếp.

Một turn có thể làm hơn một job. Source có thể ACCEPT + ASK BACK trong khi bạn chỉ ACCEPT. Đó là difference worth noticing—not automatic failure.

Chọn case gần nhất

Same move, different wording

GOOD PREDICTION. Compare phrase choice, then keep whichever version you can actually use.

Different but plausible move

PLAUSIBLE ALTERNATIVE. Ask what context clue made the source choose another move.

Right move, language error

REPAIR LANGUAGE. The conversational decision was useful; fix the sentence separately.

Register mismatch

ADJUST STANCE. Check directness, certainty or politeness.

Exact wording

Nice—but no extra points. The goal is usable turn-taking, not script telepathy.

Nếu bạn predict Yes, I want., form này unusual / incomplete for the intended acceptance. Listener hiểu ý, nhưng natural alternatives là Yes, I do. hoặc I’d love to.. Conversational move ACCEPT là đúng; wording cần repair.

Separate move quality from sentence quality.

Pause after the invitation and give one natural acceptance before revealing source.

Prediction Of course. và source-style alternative Sure, no problem. đều grammatically valid and context-dependent. Cả hai làm cùng core job: ACCEPT REQUEST. Different wording không phải error.

Prediction How about Friday? và alternative Could we do Saturday instead? đều grammatically valid. Details khác, nhưng cùng move: PROPOSE ALTERNATIVE.

This is exactly why exact-script scoring is too narrow.

Name the move first, then propose your own day.

I thought the meeting was at three.

Nếu bạn predict It moved to four. với intended meaning “ai đó đã đổi lịch”, hãy phân loại là wrong for the intended passive scheduling meaning. Natural alternative là It was moved to four.. Move EXPLAIN UPDATE đúng; grammar cần repair.

A useful prediction can still contain a repairable language issue.

Retry the explanation after hearing source.

Một dialogue, ba pauses là đủ

British Council TeachingEnglish recommends giving listening a specific task instead of asking learners to “just listen.” Với exercise này, task cực rõ:

  1. Pause trước turn.
  2. Name move bằng một word.
  3. Say your response.
  4. Reveal.
  5. Keep one useful source phrase.

Ba turns như vậy đã đủ để session có teeth. Không cần pause mỗi câu cho đến khi dialogue trông như traffic jam.

Listening prediction becomes speaking practice the moment you answer before reveal.

Pause. Name the move. Say your turn. Hear the source. Compare function. Reuse one thing.
