Watch → Shadow Anchors → Strip → Spine → Retell → Compare → Repair

  1. Watch: hiểu scene trước.
  2. Shadow Anchors: chọn vài line/phrase useful, không luyện cả dialogue.
  3. Strip: hide subtitle/transcript và stop replaying.
  4. Spine: ghi 5 meaning notes.
  5. Retell: kể scene bằng wording của bạn.
  6. Compare: replay để check meaning, không check verbatim match.
  7. Repair: sửa một narrative issue rồi retell once more.

Shadow the lines; retell the meaning.

Story Spine: chỉ giữ năm ý

  • Who? Ai là người chính?
  • Want? Họ đang muốn gì?
  • Problem? Cái gì cản lại?
  • Change? Điều gì xảy ra khiến scene đổi hướng?
  • Result?

Quoting dialogue

Strip wording harder. Keep only Story Spine notes.

Missing key event

Add or clarify Problem / Change / Result.

Too many details

Shrink the scene. One short scene is enough.

Different wording, same meaning

Accept. Retell does not need source identity.

One repeated narrative issue

Repair that one issue, then retell again once.

Retell bằng structure, không bằng subtitle memory

Original practice example

I missed the bus, so I took a taxi.

Nếu learner nói I missed the bus, so I took taxi, hãy phân loại là wrong trong intended standard sentence. Listener hiểu event, nhưng singular count noun taxi cần determiner ở đây. Natural alternative là I took a taxi.

Story role: Problem → Change.

Retell same event with your own connector if you want.

FunFluen Tiếng Việt.

Original practice example

She asked him to wait outside.

Nếu learner nói She asked him wait outside, hãy phân loại là wrong. Listener thường recover meaning. Natural alternative là She asked him to wait outside. Pattern là ask someone to + verb.

Story role: Want/Request.

In retell, you can paraphrase: She told him to wait outside. if that matches meaning.

Original practice example

He realized he’d left his wallet at home.

He realized he left his wallet at home. can be grammatically possible/context-dependent. Past perfect had left makes the earlier event especially clear, but narrative context can sometimes make simple past interpretable. Do not label every simple-past retell wrong.

Story role: Change/Realization.

Choose tense based on clarity, not source mimicry.

Original practice example

In the end, they decided to leave.

At the end, they decided to leave. can be grammatically valid with a different focus. In the end usually means eventually/finally; at the end points to a final point in time, sequence or place.

Story role: Result.

Pick the linker that matches the meaning you want to tell.

Compare meaning first, wording second

Replay scene after retell and ask:

  • Did I identify the right people?
  • Did I preserve what they wanted?
  • Did I keep the main problem?
  • Did I explain the change?
  • Did I get the result right?

If yes, different wording is often a win, not a defect.

One recording, one repair

British Council Vietnam describes replaying your own speech and identifying specific language issues. Record the retell if useful, pick one repeated issue, repair it, then retell once more.

Do not turn a 30-second scene into a full forensic investigation.

Use legally accessed scene material for your personal practice. This page’s examples are writer-original; you do not need to copy long copyrighted dialogue into notes or publish it anywhere.

Shadow the lines; retell the meaning

Shadowing gives you a few useful anchors. Story Spine keeps the event. Retelling makes the wording yours.

Watch → Shadow Anchors → Strip → Spine → Retell → Compare → Repair.
