Hỏi và chỉ đường bằng tiếng Anh: shadowing lộ trình rồi tự giải thích

Hỏi và chỉ đường bằng tiếng Anh bằng route skeleton: bắt anchor, shadow lộ trình, hỏi lại đúng chỗ chưa rõ rồi giấu model và tự giải thích đường đi.

Câu trả lời ngắn

Khi shadowing directions, đừng cố giữ nguyên paragraph: hãy bắt 3–4 route anchors, shadow cả lộ trình, rồi giấu model và tự giải thích lại cùng đường đi bằng câu của bạn.

Người ta nói: Go straight for two blocks, turn left at the bank, and the station is on your right.

Bạn nghe hiểu hết. Mười giây sau: “Ờ… bank trước hay left trước nhỉ?”

ASK → CATCH ANCHORS → SHADOW → HIDE → RETELL

Route skeleton: START → MOVE → TURN/LANDMARK → ARRIVAL

Model: Go straight for two blocks, turn left at the bank, and the station is on your right.

Skeleton: straight two blocks → left at bank → station right

Retell: Go straight for two blocks. When you get to the bank, turn left. The station is on your right.

British Council models polite direction questions such as Can you tell me where … is, please? and Can you tell me how to get to …?. Xem British Council — Episode 02.

Original practice example

Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the station, please?

Asking a local or staff member for directions.

British Council’s A2 directions practice chains actions such as go straight, go past, turn right, turn left and then identifies where the destination is. Xem British Council — An invitation to a party.

Bank phải gắn với action: left at bank.

Original practice example

Go straight for two blocks, then turn left at the bank. The station is on your right.

Trước tiên nhìn ba anchors: straight two blocks → left at bank → station right.

Giving a short fictional walking route.

British Council also uses route-repair language such as Is this the right way? alongside corrective directions. Xem British Council — Episode 07.

Original practice example

Sorry, do I turn left at the bank or after I pass it?

Clarifying a turn before following directions.

Cambridge distinguishes opposite from in front of: opposite means facing something from the other side, while in front of places something close to the front of another thing. Xem Cambridge Grammar.

  • The pharmacy is opposite the hotel. → ở phía đối diện.
  • The pharmacy is in front of the hotel. → ở ngay phía trước hotel.

Cả hai đều grammatical. Vấn đề là chúng mô tả hai map layouts khác nhau.

REPEAT-BACK: confirm skeleton trước khi bước đi

Nếu route là straight two blocks → left at bank → station right, bạn có thể check:

So I go straight for two blocks, turn left at the bank, and the station is on my right. Is that right?

Original practice example

Go straight for two blocks. When you get to the bank, turn left. The station is on your right.

Success criterion là route fidelity: same move, same turn, same landmark, same arrival.

Retelling directions to a third person after hearing them.

Nghĩa: Đi thẳng hai dãy nhà. Khi tới ngân hàng, rẽ trái. Ga ở bên phải.

Giấu full model, chỉ giữ ba anchors rồi tự retell một lần nữa bằng wording khác.

Nhớ lộ trình, đừng nhớ từng chữ. Nếu path còn nguyên, English không cần photocopy.

Route Skeleton Lab: route còn nguyên không?

Model: Go straight for two blocks, turn left at the bank, and the station is on your right.
Notes: straight two blocks → left at bank → station right

COMPLETE SKELETON. MOVE, TURN/LANDMARK và ARRIVAL đều còn. Giờ retell bằng wording khác.

Bạn nghe được “turn left … the bank” nhưng không biết là at hay after.

CLARIFY BEFORE RETELL. Sorry, do I turn left at the bank or after I pass it?

Intended: destination nằm đối diện hotel.
Retell: It’s in front of the hotel.

Xem diagnosis

MEANING CHANGED. Nếu intended meaning là across/facing from the other side, use It’s opposite the hotel.

Model: Walk past the park and turn right at the traffic lights. The library is on your left.
Retell: Go past the park. When you reach the lights, turn right. You’ll see the library on your left.

ROUTE PRESERVED. Wording changed; path did not.

Model contains: left turn at bank.
Your skeleton: straight → bank → station right.

ANCHOR MISSING. Restore left at bank before retelling.

How can I go to the station?Understandable but unusual/non-idiomatic for the intended route questionYou may be asking about means/possibility of going.Ask for the route. How can I get to the station? / Could you tell me how to get to the station?Go to is valid broadly; this is about the conventional direction-question pattern.
Turn left in the bank.Wrong preposition for the intended landmark turnCould sound like turning while inside the bank.Turn at the bank landmark.Turn left at the bank.In the bank is valid when you mean inside the bank.
The pharmacy is in front of the hotel.Grammatically valid with a different spatial meaning when intended meaning is “across from”The pharmacy is close to the front of the hotel.Say it is across/facing from the other side. The pharmacy is opposite the hotel. Both forms are valid; they describe different layouts.
Go straight two blocks.Understandable but reduced/unusual compared with the target teaching frameContinue straight for two blocks.Give route distance.Go straight for two blocks.Spontaneous varieties may reduce wording; the article trains a clear reusable form.

Bài thử cuối: route handoff

  1. Đọc hoặc nghe một fictional route ba bước.
  2. Viết chỉ ba hoặc bốn anchors.
  3. Shadow original route.
  4. Giấu original.

Success = same path survives after the model disappears.
