Model: I led a team of ten and increased sales by 30%.
QUESTION → SHADOW SHAPE → TRUE EVIDENCE → HIDE MODEL → ANSWER → FOLLOW-UP
SHAPE YES → FACTS YOURS.
British Council recommends preparing for interviews by studying the role, anticipating likely questions, using real examples from your experience and practising answers aloud. Xem British Council — How to prepare for a job interview in English.
I led a team of ten and increased sales by 30%.
hãy extract shape:
responsibility → action → result
Rồi dùng facts thật của bạn.
“Tell me about yourself”: NOW → RELEVANT PAST → WHY THIS ROLE
Original practice example
I’m currently a marketing assistant, and over the past year I’ve focused on campaign reporting and content coordination. I’m applying because I’d like to take on more project ownership.
Shape = current role → relevant recent work → why this role.
Opening interview question such as “Tell me about yourself.”
Viết ba bullet của riêng bạn: NOW → RELEVANT PAST → WHY THIS ROLE.
I’m hardworking, motivated and a team player nghe quen vì nó có thể thuộc về gần như bất kỳ candidate nào.
Better shape:
strength → real example → why it matters here
Original practice example
One of my strengths is prioritising. In my internship, I managed three weekly reporting tasks and used a checklist to keep them on time.
The strength is specific because it has evidence. “Three weekly reporting tasks” is fictional practice data here; replace it with a real example you can explain if the interviewer asks follow-up questions.
Questions about strengths, working style or fit.
British Council distinguishes common, competency and hypothetical interview questions, and explains the STAR structure for competency examples: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Xem British Council — Job interviews.
STAR useful khi interviewer hỏi kiểu:
Tell me about a time you had to meet a difficult deadline.
Original practice example
In a group project, we fell behind schedule. I reorganised my own tasks, flagged the delay early, and agreed new deadlines with the team. We finished the project by the revised date.
Event arc = situation → your action → result.
Competency or behavioural interview questions.
Tell me about yourself không cần biến thành project post-mortem.
TRUTH AUDIT: đóng model lại trước khi model bắt đầu sống hộ bạn
Trước khi luyện answer, mark từng detail:
- STRUCTURE: có thể mượn.
- MY FACT: có thật, mình giải thích được.
- MODEL FACT: bỏ hoặc thay.
- UNKNOWN: đừng đoán.
Những thứ đặc biệt phải audit:
- team size;
- job title;
- revenue/sales/result percentage;
- tools you claim to know;
- scope you claim to own;
- management responsibility.
British Council’s C1 interview model shows a full interaction rather than isolated model answers: the candidate explains experience and fit, then the conversation continues. Xem British Council — A job interview.
Sau mỗi answer, tự hỏi một follow-up:
- What did you personally do?
- What was the result?
- What would you do differently now?
Nếu answer collapse ngay vì bạn không biết “you personally” là gì, quay lại Truth Audit.
Question mơ hồ? Clarify term, đừng đoán interviewer đang nghĩ gì
Original practice example
Could you clarify what you mean by “ownership” in this context?
Interview questions with vague or company-specific wording.
“Do you have any questions for us?”
British Council recommends preparing questions for the interviewer, and its C1 interview model also includes candidate-led questions at the end. Xem interview preparation guidance.
Original practice example
What would success look like in this role during the first few months?
Answer Transfer Lab: cái gì được mượn, cái gì phải bỏ?
Chọn trước khi mở answer: SHAPE, TRUE FACT, REMOVE, CLARIFY hay FOLLOW-UP READY.
Model: I increased sales by 30%.
Bạn chưa từng đo sales.
Xem diagnosis
REMOVE FACT, KEEP FUNCTION. Function là “show a result”.
Model: I led a team of ten.
Xem diagnosis
REMOVE CLAIM. Nếu đúng với lịch sử của bạn, một direction honest có thể là: I worked in a four-person project team and was responsible for the weekly reporting. Chỉ dùng nếu thật.
Answer: I’m hardworking and motivated.
Xem diagnosis
NEEDS TRUE EVIDENCE. Add one real situation showing the trait.
Question: Tell me about a time you had to meet a difficult deadline.
Xem diagnosis
STAR FIT. Use a real event. Mark your own ACTION separately from what the team did.
Question: How do you demonstrate ownership?
Xem diagnosis
CLARIFY. Could you clarify what you mean by “ownership” in this context?
Follow-up: What did you personally do?
Xem diagnosis
FOLLOW-UP READY TEST. Isolate your own action. If you cannot, the original answer may be too vague or borrowed.
Bốn lỗi dễ làm answer nghe “học thuộc” hơn cần thiết
| Câu gốc | Phân loại | Người nghe hiểu gì | Ý định | Cách tự nhiên hơn | Ghi chú |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I am graduated from university. | Wrong for the intended ordinary active-past meaning | You completed university. | Describe education. | I graduated from university. / I’m a graduate of… | be graduated can occur in rare/passive contexts, but is not the target self-introduction form. |
| I have experience about marketing. | Unusual/non-idiomatic for intended field experience | You have marketing-related experience. | Describe professional field. | I have experience in marketing. / I have experience with campaign reporting. | experience in often fits fields; experience with can fit tasks/tools. |
| I am responsible of weekly reports. | Wrong preposition | Your responsibility is clear. | Describe duties. | I am responsible for weekly reports. | Target collocation: responsible for. |
| My strong point is work hard. | Understandable but non-idiomatic/grammatically incomplete for intended answer | You consider hard work a strength. | Describe a strength. | One of my strengths is that I work hard. | Better still, add a truthful example instead of stacking adjectives. |
- Answer từ bullets.
- Tự hỏi một follow-up: What did I personally do? hoặc What happened next?
