Layered Turn Pass: Skeleton → Stance → Focus → Arc → Shadow → Recast
- Skeleton: strip turn xuống core proposition.
- Stance: speaker certain, tentative, conceding, correcting, distancing hay persuading?
- Focus: information nào đang được foreground?
- Arc: map long turn—Setup → Pivot → Point, hoặc shape tương tự.
- Shadow: reproduce cả wording lẫn stance/focus across the arc.
- Recast: deliberately đổi một stance/focus choice để hear meaning shift.
Advanced shadowing is about preserving the speaker’s choices.
“Advanced” nên tăng cái gì?
British Council LearnEnglish C1 listening moves into extended speech about abstract, complex or unfamiliar topics—job interviews, lectures, talks and meetings.
British Council’s C1 description also includes recognising implicit meaning and using language flexibly/effectively. Đó là clue quan trọng: advanced listening không chỉ là “understand all words”. Bạn cần hear what is implied, foregrounded or softened.
Stance: speaker đang đứng ở đâu?
- CERTAIN: presenting as clear/firm.
- TENTATIVE: hedging certainty.
- CONCEDING: acknowledging one point before another.
- CORRECTING: pushing back against an assumption.
- DISTANCING: reducing personal commitment.
- PERSUADING: guiding listener toward a position/action.
Shadowing stance không có nghĩa “copy emotion”. Nó nghĩa bạn biết tại sao might, actually, I do think hoặc a concession matters in that turn.
Focus: chỗ nào thay meaning nếu bạn nhấn sai?
British Council’s C1 emphasis lesson shows that English can add emphasis through cleft structures, inversion and auxiliaries; in speech, stressing an auxiliary can add emphasis.
Practical question trước khi shadow:
Nếu speaker chỉ được phép làm nổi một contrast, đó là contrast nào?
Đừng stress everything. Advanced delivery là selective.
Long turn: đừng chunk theo breath, chunk theo discourse
Ba useful arc shapes:
- Setup → Pivot → Point
- Claim → Support → Qualification
- Problem → Reframe → Recommendation
Nếu bạn split ngay giữa setup và pivot, meaning arc bị gãy dù pronunciation từng word có đẹp.
Bản shadow của bạn đang mất layer nào?
Core proposition unclear
SKELETON FIRST. Summarise turn in plain language before another shadow pass.
Stance mismatch
Label the stance and find the linguistic cue: hedge, auxiliary, concession, modal, adverb.
Everything stressed
FOCUS. Pick one main contrast and reduce competition around it.
Pivot disappears
Map the arc and practise pre-pivot + pivot + point as one semantic unit.
Melody copied blindly
Recast the sentence with a different emphasis. If you can explain the meaning change, the original contour now has a job.
Bốn advanced examples: wording đúng vẫn chưa đủ
Original practice example
What I object to is the timing, not the proposal itself.
I object to the proposal. là grammatically valid with a different meaning/focus. Target explicitly preserves the proposal and contrasts it with timing. Listener interpretation changes substantially if that contrast disappears.
Use when disagreement is narrow, not global.
Shadow once with focus on timing, then deliberately move focus and explain what changes.
Original practice example
I do think we need to reconsider it.
I think we need to reconsider it. cũng grammatically valid. Emphatic do can add correction, insistence or emphasis depending on context. Removing it changes stance/focus, not basic proposition.
Useful when responding to an assumption such as “You don’t think this matters.”
Compare neutral vs emphatic versions aloud.
Original practice example
Much as I understand the concern, I don’t think delaying is the answer.
Although I understand the concern, I don’t think delaying is the answer. is also grammatically valid and expresses a similar concession; style/register differs. The crucial discourse structure is concession → pivot → point.
Useful for disagreeing while acknowledging the other side.
Mark the pivot before I don’t think....
Original practice example
Had we known earlier, we could have prepared.
Nếu learner nói If we would have known earlier, we could have prepared, hãy phân loại là non-standard / wrong for the intended standard past counterfactual. Natural alternatives là If we had known earlier... hoặc inverted target Had we known earlier....
Useful in retrospective explanation or accountability.
Hear the whole conditional frame before chasing speed.
Recast: phá bản gốc một chút để chứng minh bạn hiểu nó
Chọn một turn rồi deliberately:
- remove a hedge;
- move contrastive focus;
- replace a concession with a direct disagreement;
- remove emphatic auxiliary.
Advanced exit check
Nếu đủ năm, bạn đang shadow meaning architecture—not just sound.
Longer is not more advanced if the stance disappears
Strip the turn. Name the stance. Find the focus. Map the arc. Shadow the choices. Then recast one choice to prove you heard it.
Skeleton → Stance → Focus → Arc → Shadow → Recast.
