Nói nó ra: Sorry, I missed the last digit. Could you say that again?

IDENTIFY → SIGNAL → REPAIR → READ BACK → HAND BACK

Cambridge’s Telephoning page models ordinary phone language for asking to speak to someone and identifying the person on the line. British Council’s Leaving a message lesson also builds the call around who is calling, who they need and what message must be passed on.

Original practice example

Hi, this is Minh Tran calling. Could I speak to Laura, please?

Calling an office or another person through a receptionist.

Nhưng khi bạn chủ động mở call, This is Minh hoặc This is Minh calling thường rõ job hơn.

British Council’s Checking understanding lesson teaches exactly the kind of repair an audio-only call needs: I can’t hear you very well, asking someone to say something again, or asking them to repeat it more slowly.

Original practice example

Sorry, I can’t hear you very well. Could you say that again, please?

Bạn name the problem rồi request một action rõ.

Audio-only call when speech is unclear.

Nghĩa: Xin lỗi, tôi nghe bạn không rõ lắm. Bạn nói lại được không?

Đổi request thành Could you repeat that more slowly, please?

  • Sorry, could you spell your surname?
  • Sorry, I missed the last digit. Could you say it again?
  • Do you mean fifteen or fifty?

British Council’s phone lesson includes spelling a surname, repeating a telephone number, noticing a wrong digit and correcting it. Đó là exactly the useful habit: zoom in on the missing unit.

READ BACK: number quan trọng thì đừng chỉ “uh-huh” trong đầu

British Council’s Leaving a message dialogue explicitly uses a read-back step after taking a phone number. That gives the other person a clean chance to catch a wrong digit before the call ends.

Original practice example

Let me read that back: 07460 990188. Is that right?

Repeat critical information and invite correction.

Confirming a fictional callback number or another critical detail.

Cambridge defines hold the line as waiting on the telephone until someone can speak to you, and hold on also has a phone sense meaning to wait.

So if you hear:

Hold on a moment, please.

the next silence does not automatically mean “start a new topic”. It may simply mean the other person is checking or transferring.

If the person you need is unavailable, the call can switch jobs:

  • Could I leave a message, please?
  • Could you ask her to call me back?
  • Can I take a message?

Keep the message concise enough that the receiver can actually pass it on.

HAND BACK: khi hai người cùng nói, đừng cùng restart

Face-to-face, eye contact or a tiny gesture can help decide who continues. In audio-only practice, make the handoff verbal.

Original practice example

Sorry, I interrupted you. Please go ahead.

You acknowledge overlap and explicitly yield the turn.

Two speakers start at the same time on an audio-only call.

Nghĩa: Xin lỗi, tôi chen ngang lời bạn. Bạn nói tiếp đi.

Role-play overlap twice: once you yield, once the other speaker yields.

Xem move

IDENTIFY. Hi, this is Minh Tran calling.

Bạn chỉ nghe được speech thành từng mảnh.

Xem move

SIGNAL. Sorry, I can’t hear you very well. Could you say that again, please?

Bạn nghe được message nhưng miss surname.

Xem move

REPAIR ONE PIECE. Sorry, could you spell your surname? Không cần repeat cả conversation.

Bạn vừa ghi callback number.

Xem move

READ BACK. Repeat the number and ask Is that right?

Xem move

MESSAGE. Give one concise callback action plus the critical detail needed to do it.

Hai người cùng bắt đầu nói.

Xem move

HAND BACK. Sorry, I interrupted you. Please go ahead.

Receiver says Hold on, please.

Xem move

HOLD. Wait. The silence itself is not a new speaking turn.

I am Minh speaking.Grammatically possible but unusual for ordinary caller self-identificationThe speaker identifies as Minh.Introduce yourself on the phone. This is Minh. / This is Minh calling.Speaking. is conventional when responding to a request for the named person.
Can you repeat again?Understandable but redundant/non-idiomaticYou want repetition.Hear the utterance again.Could you say that again? / Could you repeat that?Again is natural with say; repeat already carries repetition.
Speak more slow, please.Wrong adverb form and overly direct for the target neutral requestYou want slower speech.Ask for slower repetition.Could you repeat that more slowly, please?Direct imperatives can be valid in some urgent contexts; this lesson targets neutral-polite repair.
I call for Laura.Unusual/non-idiomatic for the intended current phone purposeMay sound like you call on behalf of/for Laura.Ask to speak to Laura.I’m calling for Laura. / Could I speak to Laura, please? The second version directly states the intended phone action.

Bài thử: screen-off call drill

  1. Shadow một short two-person phone dialogue.
  2. Shadow cả caller và receiver.
  3. Giấu phần prose/model, chỉ giữ role labels.
  4. Thêm đúng một twist: missed digit, unclear surname, hold, message hoặc overlap.
  5. Nói interaction signal thành lời.
  6. Repair đúng một piece.

English phải làm phần đó bằng lời.
