怎样用英语比较选择并提出建议?
英语比较两个选择时总是列完优缺点却不知道怎么建议?用 Priority → Compare → Trade-off → Recommend:先定标准,再同维度比较,说明取舍,并按对方最看重的条件给建议。
比较和建议最清楚的顺序,不是先找“哪个更好”,而是先确定对方最看重什么,再用同一标准比较两个 options、说出 trade-off,最后给 conditional recommendation。
A is cheaper. B is faster. A is closer. B has more features. So A is better.
前面每句都可能是真的,最后一句却像裁判突然换了规则。先选尺子,再比长短。
Priority:先选尺子,再决定“better”是什么意思
CEFR Companion Volume 里的 spoken argument descriptors 会涉及比较 alternatives、说明不同 options 的 advantages 和 disadvantages。真正实用的第一步,是先确定你正在比较的 criterion。
Original practice example
If flexibility matters most, Option A has the advantage.
这句先锁定 criterion:flexibility。现在 “advantage” 不再是模糊的 overall winner,而是在一个明确标准下的优势。
学习方式、日程、交通、普通购买选择等低风险 decision。
意思:如果灵活性最重要,A 更有优势。
练习:在比较前先说一句 If ___ matters most…。
如果 priority 还不知道,最好的英语可能不是 recommendation,而是一个问题:
- What matters more to you: flexibility or live feedback?
- Is price the main factor, or is speed more important?
没有尺子,better 很容易只是 speaker 自己的 preference 穿上了客观结论的外套。
Compare:两个 option 要用同一把尺子
Cambridge Grammar 的 comparative guidance说明了 -er、more/less 以及 much, far, a little, a bit 等程度表达。
Original practice example
Option A is more flexible than Option B.
这是真正的 same-ruler comparison:A 和 B 都在 flexibility 这一个 dimension 上比较。
比较课程、工作安排、普通服务或学习工具。
意思:A 比 B 更灵活。
练习:选一个 criterion,用 more/less/-er than 比两个 option。
你还可以调整程度:
- A is much more flexible than B.
- A is a little cheaper than B.
- B is far easier to use.
但别把 precision 演成数字魔术。如果你没有可靠 measurement,就不要随手创造 “30% better”。
Whereas / while:把 contrast 放在同一画面里
Cambridge Grammar说明 whereas 可以用来对比两个 facts 或 ideas, while 也可以有 contrast 用法。
比如:
Option A is more flexible, whereas Option B gives you more live interaction.
这个句子没有宣布 winner。它只是把两个重要 differences 放到一张图里。
Trade-off:说清“得到什么,也放弃什么”
真正有用的 recommendation 往往要承认 trade-off。一个 option 在 flexibility 上更强,不代表它在 feedback 上也一定更强。
Original practice example
A gives you more control over timing, but less immediate feedback.
这句把 gain 和 cost 放在一起。listener 不会被 “A is better” 这种模糊 winner language 推着走。
任何存在明显取舍的普通选择。
意思:A 给你更多时间安排自由,但即时反馈更少。
练习:用 more X, but less Y 写出一个真实 trade-off。
常用 trade-off patterns:
- A is cheaper, but B is more convenient.
- You get more flexibility with A, but you give up some live interaction.
- B is faster, although it gives you less control over timing.
Recommend:把建议绑回 priority
建议不是颁奖,是匹配。
Original practice example
If your schedule changes a lot, I’d choose A. If live feedback matters more, B may suit you better.
同一组 facts 可以得到两个 recommendation,因为 priority 不同。这里 recommendation 是 conditional,不是假装存在 universal winner。
朋友问学习方式、普通服务、日程方案等低风险建议时。
意思:如果你的日程变化很大,我会选 A;如果实时反馈更重要,B 可能更适合你。
练习:对同一组选项说两个 If X matters…, I’d choose… recommendation。
Cambridge Grammar说明 should 常用于 advice 和 recommendation。日常低风险 context 可以说:
If flexibility is your main concern, you should probably choose A.
但如果你并不了解全部情况,conditional wording 往往更诚实:
If that’s your main priority, I’d lean toward A.
recommend / suggest / should:别让 grammar 抢走 decision
Cambridge Grammar 的 recommend guidance支持这些结构:
- I recommend choosing A.
- I recommend that you choose A.
不推荐 learner 把它写成:
I recommend you to choose A.
Cambridge Grammar 的 suggest guidance同样支持:
- I suggest choosing A.
- I suggest that you choose A.
而不是:
I suggest you to choose A.
- advice = noun,通常不可数:some advice
- advise = verb:I’d advise you to check the schedule first.
Decision Lab:换尺子,答案会不会变?
Base facts
Option A = flexible schedule, recorded, less immediate interaction.
Option B = fixed schedule, live, more immediate interaction.
Scenario A:priority = flexibility
看模型
A is more flexible than B, but it gives you less immediate interaction. If your schedule changes a lot, I’d choose A.
Scenario B:priority = live feedback
看模型
B gives you more immediate feedback, whereas A gives you more control over timing. If real-time feedback matters most, B may suit you better.
Scenario C:priority unknown
看模型
It depends on what matters more to you: flexibility or live feedback?
Scenario D:e-reader vs paper
看两个不同 recommendation
If portability matters most, an e-reader may suit you better.
If you really value writing notes directly on the page, paper may fit you better.
同一组选项,不同 priority,不需要硬找 universal winner。
Scenario E:morning vs evening study
只使用给定 fictional facts:morning = quieter;evening = more free time。
看模型
If a quiet environment matters most, morning study has the advantage. If having more free time matters more, evening study may be easier to maintain.
一组 facts,两种建议
挑一组 low-stakes options,用同样的 facts 连说两版:
- If X matters most, I’d choose A because…
- If Y matters more, B may suit you better because…
这个练习最重要的不是 recommendation 本身,而是让你亲眼看到:priority 一变,合理建议也可以变。
学习者常见表达修正
| 学习者表达 | 分类 | 别人可能理解成 | 你真正想说 | 更自然的说法 | 说明 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A is more cheaper than B. | Wrong | 能理解 A 更便宜。 | A 比 B 便宜。 | A is cheaper than B. | cheaper 已经是 comparative,不再加 more。 |
| I recommend you to choose A. | Unusual / non-standard learner pattern | 意思完全能理解。 | 我建议你选 A。 | I recommend choosing A. / I recommend that you choose A. | 按 Cambridge 的 standard patterns,用 -ing 或 that-clause。 |
| I suggest you to choose B. | Wrong / non-standard pattern | 能理解你建议 B。 | 我建议你选 B。 | I suggest choosing B. / I suggest that you choose B. | suggest 不用这个 to-infinitive pattern。 |
| Let me give you an advice. | Wrong in standard use | 能理解你要给一条建议。 | 让我给你一点建议。 | Let me give you some advice. / Let me give you a piece of advice. | advice 通常不可数。 |
Register note: I’d choose… 很自然地表达“如果是我”;You should… 是常见 advice form;You might want to… 可以更 tentative。更广泛的 directness / formality 差异留给后续专门页面。
先选尺子,再比长短
下一次你想说 A is better,先补一句:
Better for what?
先定 Priority,再 Compare,同样的事实里找 Trade-off,最后才 Recommend。
好建议不是把一个 option 送上领奖台,而是解释它为什么更适合这个 priority。
