The short answer

You misunderstood me. I think we may have got our wires crossed.

Shared:

Original practice example

I think we may have got our wires crossed about the deadline.

get our wires crossed

练习:把 the deadline 换成 the meeting timethe price 或一个真实场景。

  • I think there may be a misunderstanding about the deadline.
  • It looks like we may have understood the plan differently.
  • I think we may be talking about two different things.

Mine:

Original practice example

What I understood was that the deadline was Friday.

What I understood was…

  • What I meant was Friday, not Monday.
  • I meant move the meeting, not cancel it.
  • I was referring to next Friday, not this Friday.

Gap:

Gap
我当时说自己 tired;你理解成我 upset with you。

The difference seems to be the date. I had Friday in my notes, and you had Monday.

Reset:

Original practice example

Can we confirm that Friday is the deadline we’re using from now on?

Reset:

  • So, just to make sure we’re on the same page, we’re moving the meeting to Tuesday, not cancelling it.
  • Can we agree that this is the version we’re using now?
  • Just to confirm the next step, I’ll send the draft and you’ll review it tomorrow.

Original practice example

It looks like we had different understandings of the task. Let’s fix the current version first, and then we can check where the instructions became unclear.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear.

I don’t think I explained that clearly. What I meant was next Friday, not this Friday.

I may have misunderstood, but I had Friday in my notes. Can we check what was agreed?

I may have misunderstood 表示 uncertainty,不等于 It was my fault.

I don’t think I explained that clearly.
I think there may be a misunderstanding. It was my fault.
I had Friday in my notes. Can we check what was agreed? You definitely said Friday.
What I meant was move the meeting, not cancel it.You never listen.

Scenario A:Friday vs Monday

You misunderstood me. I said Friday.

I think we may have got our wires crossed. What I understood was that the deadline was Friday. It sounds like you had Monday. Can we confirm which date we’re using now?

That’s not what I said. I said move the meeting, not cancel it.

I think there’s been a misunderstanding. What I meant was move the meeting to another time, not cancel it. Can we reschedule it now?

Scenario C:

You did the wrong task because you didn’t listen.

It looks like we had different understandings of the task. Let’s fix the current version first, then we can check where the instructions became unclear.

Scenario D:

这时该不该 own it?

I don’t think I explained that clearly. What I meant was Friday the 25th, not this Friday.

You understood me wrong. You misunderstood me. That’s not quite what I meant.I think there may have been a misunderstanding.,但它们的 pragmatic framing 更中性。
We had a misunderstanding each other. We misunderstood each other. / There was a misunderstanding between us. a misunderstanding each other 不是自然结构。
What I meaned was Friday. Friday。 What I meant was Friday. mean 的过去式是 meant
You misunderstood me. That’s not quite what I meant. / I think we may have got our wires crossed.

Register note: We got our wires crossed I think there may be a misunderstanding about…What I meant was…

Collocation trap: 常说 clear up a misunderstandingclarify what you meanbe on the same pageget our wires crossed;不要直译成 make the misunderstanding clear

Shared → Mine → Gap → Reset。
