你聽完一句,大意完全懂;可是一做 dictation,紙上只剩幾個 content words,the、to、did、-ed 全蒸發。另一段剛好相反:transcript 一看每個字都會,audio 一播卻整串追不上。這兩種都叫「聽不清」,但修法不同。先問一個問題:你是跟不上 FLOW,還是抓不到 exact FORM?
先分四類:FLOW、FORM、BOTH、MEANING
| 症狀 | First move | 你在測什麼 |
|---|---|---|
| transcript 容易,continuous audio 一直跑掉 | SHADOW | FLOW:real-time tracking / word recognition in motion |
| gist okay,exact words、articles、auxiliaries、suffixes 常漏 | DICTATE | FORM:exact recovery / segmentation / small forms |
| 兩種都發生 | DICTATE → CHECK → SHADOW | 先精準,再放回 moving speech |
| transcript 本身大量不懂 | LEARN FIRST | MEANING / vocabulary,不是 technique first |
先問:是跟不上,還是寫不出? 這個問題比「shadowing 和 dictation 哪個比較有效?」有用得多。
FORM:大意活著,細節卻死了一地時,用 dictation
Dictation 最不客氣、也最有用的地方,是它不接受「我大概有聽到」。你得真的決定:那裡是 a、the、to、did,還是你根本沒聽出來。
Cho 2021 對 55 位 Korean EFL learners 的 self-paced passage dictation study看到很具體的 error patterns:function words 容易被省略或聽錯,另外也出現 past/plural suffixes、contractions、word boundaries、linking 和 elision 相關錯誤。
這些不是「所有 learners 都一定會犯」的統計模板,而是告訴你 dictation 很擅長把哪種問題逼到檯面上:
- FUNCTION WORDS:a, the, to, of, do, have 這類低 prominence 的小字;
- ENDINGS:-s, -ed;
- CONTRACTIONS / REDUCTIONS:should’ve, he’s, gonna 等;
- WORD BOUNDARIES:你聽到的是一條聲音,卻不知道字從哪裡切;
- CONTENT WORD MISHEARING:
Hamada 2016 的 shadowing study中,low- 與 intermediate-proficiency groups 都在 phoneme-perception measure 上進步,支持 shadowing 對 bottom-up auditory processing 的作用。Hamada 2019 的 review則把 shadowing 描述為把 attention 推向 speech perception 和 word recognition in continuous input。
這就是 FLOW problem 的關鍵:audio 不會每三個字停下來開會。你要一邊 vocalize 前面的 input,一邊繼續接後面的聲音。
典型 FLOW clues:
- pause/replay 後可以辨認 exact words,但自然連續播放時跟丟;
- transcript 很簡單,audio 卻像另一種語言;
- 單句慢慢聽 okay,一拉回原 pacing 就崩;
- known phrases 在 linking/reduction 後突然認不出來。
這種情況,shadowing 的價值就在於把你放回 moving stream 裡。它不代表 dictation 完全沒用,只是第一個 bottleneck 比較像 FLOW。
「我有聽懂大意」不等於 exact form 真的有進來
假設 audio 是:
She’s been working there for years.
你聽完可以正確報告:
She works there a long time.
Meaning 大致活著。可是你到底有沒有真正聽到 she’s、been、working 的完整形態和 for?不一定。
這個例子是教學示例,不是實驗資料。它想說的是:top-down meaning 可以把故事救回來,但 exact auditory form 仍可能有洞。
Dictation 在這裡像一張 exact receipt:它逼你把「我以為我聽到了」寫出來,再和 transcript 對。
BOTH:最實用的順序常是 Dictate → Check → Shadow
有些 learner 不用二選一。Exact forms 會漏,continuous speech 也跟不上。這時最有用的做法常不是把兩種 exercise 各做半小時,而是讓它們接力。
拿一句:
I should’ve told him earlier.
- DICTATE:不看 transcript,寫下你真的聽到的內容。
- CHECK:假設你寫成 I should told him earlier.,對照後發現少了 ’ve。
- LISTEN:只重聽 should’ve told him,把 reduced sound 對回 exact form。
- SHADOW:把修好的 phrase 放回完整、連續的 sentence timing。
- TRANSFER:如果 meaning 已知,再換一個新句子測 could’ve / would’ve 是否還聽得到。
這不是一個經實驗驗證的「五步最佳 protocol」,而是 FunFluen 的實用 repair framework:precision first, flow second。
Siegel 與 Siegel 的 lower-intermediate classroom study提供一個有用背景:加入多種 bottom-up listening activities 的 treatment group,在 dictation 和 listening outcomes 上有較好的 between-group results。不過那個 intervention 有六種 bottom-up activities,所以不能把效果全部算給 dictation 一個人。
MEANING:transcript
FLOW → SHADOW。 先用短、已理解的 line 做 shadowing,把 known forms 放回 continuous timing。這不證明 dictation 對你沒用,只代表第一個 bottleneck 比較像 real-time tracking。
大意懂,但寫下來總漏 a、the、to、-ed、-s。
FORM → DICTATE。 先把 exact mismatch 看清楚。注意:這些錯誤不一定 100% 是聽覺問題,grammar/spelling knowledge 也可能參與。
停下來重播可以聽出 exact words,但 natural pace 一跑就跟不上。
FLOW → SHADOW。 FORM 在 supported condition 下已經 recoverable;現在要測它能不能留在 moving stream。
Dictation 漏很多 exact forms,shadowing 也只是模糊跟著聲音跑。
BOTH → DICTATE → CHECK → SHADOW。 先讓錯誤變 visible,再把 corrected form 送回連續 speech。
Transcript 裡一半 key vocabulary 我都不會。
MEANING → LEARN FIRST。 先學 blocking language。不要讓 dictation 變 spelling lottery,也不要讓 shadowing 變 sound karaoke。
四句英文:把你的 listening miss 說準
Original practice example
I can follow the gist, but I miss the small words.
follow the gist 表示跟得上大意;miss 在 listening context 可以表示沒聽到、沒注意到。
適合描述 FORM problem:meaning 還在,但 function words 常掉。
意思:我跟得上大意,但常漏掉小字。
替換:small words / endings / contractions。
Original practice example
I know the words on the page, but I can’t catch them in connected speech.
catch 在 listening 裡常表示成功聽辨;on the page 和 in connected speech 把 written knowledge 與 auditory recognition 對比出來。
適合描述典型 FLOW problem。
意思:文字看得懂,但放進連續語流就聽不出來。
完成:I know ___, but I can’t catch ___.
Original practice example
I wrote what I thought I heard, then checked the transcript.
what I thought I heard 是 embedded clause,表示「我以為自己聽到的內容」;then 清楚標示 repair sequence。
適合描述 dictation → check 的核心動作。
意思:我先寫下我以為聽到的內容,再對 transcript。
完成:I ___ what I thought I ___, then ___.
Original practice example
I didn’t hear the ending.
如果學習者說 I didn’t listen the ending,對 intended meaning「我沒聽到結尾」是錯的:listen 通常要搭配 to,而且 listen to 強調把注意力放在某個聲音;hear 更適合表示「聲音有沒有成功進入知覺」。
I didn’t hear the ending. = 我沒聽到結尾。I didn’t listen to the ending. 則可以是「我沒有繼續聽/沒有去聽結尾」,文法正確但情境不同。
意思:我沒有聽到那個結尾。
各造一句:hear 與 listen to。
現在做一次:One line, two lenses
不要算百分比。這個 mini-test 的目的不是替 listening 打分,而是決定下一輪到底要繼續修 FORM 還是 FLOW。
Dictation 很精準,但不要把它當成「純 bottom-up 儀器」
Dictation 確實常被用來觀察 bottom-up processing。比如 Kissling 2018就使用 sentence-level dictation 作為 novice L2 Spanish learners bottom-up listening 的一項 measure。
