英語で理解を確認する練習｜聞き取った内容を言い直して確かめる
英語は聞こえたけど理解が合っているか不安な人へ。LISTEN→STRIP→RESTATE→CHECK→ADJUSTで、聞いた内容を自分の言葉に直し、意味を確かめてから行動する練習をします。
相手のsentenceをそのままrepeatするのではなく、ACTION・WHO・WHEN・CONDITIONなど必要なmeaningだけ抜き出し、自分の言葉で短く言い直して確認します。
相手が Send the revised draft to Maya before lunch unless legal sends a new version. と言った。全部聞こえた。でも「Mayaに？ legalに？ before lunch？ after lunch？」が少しでも曖昧なら、理解はまだfinishedではありません。同じwordsを返さない。meaningを返す。
- LISTEN：最後まで聞く
- STRIP：ACTION / WHO / WHEN / CONDITIONなどcoreだけ残す
- RESTATE：自分のEnglishで短く言い直す
- CHECK：修正の余地を作る
- ADJUST：correctionを入れてfinal meaningを更新する
LISTEN：早すぎる「OK」を一度止める
British Councilのinternational communication guidanceでは、分からないときにquestionsを使ってunderstandingをcheckすることがgood communicationの一部として扱われています。同じpageでは、key informationをdifferent wordsでparaphraseする方法も紹介されています。
理解確認の最初のmistakeは、speakerがまだ話している途中で「分かった」と決めることです。まずturnを最後まで聞きます。そのあと、全文ではなくcoreを抜きます。
STRIP：長いsentenceをACTION / WHO / WHEN / CONDITIONへ落とす
Please send the revised draft to Maya before lunch, unless legal sends us a newer version first. If they do, use that version instead.

この4slotは、すべてのconversationに必要なuniversal formulaではありません。taskやinstructionで「何を・誰が/誰に・いつ・どんな条件で」が重要なときに使う実用frameです。
RESTATE：同じwordsをcopyせず、meaningを小さく作り直す
Cambridge Dictionaryはparaphraseを、spoken/written contentをdifferent wordsで言い直し、ときにはshorter/simplerにしてmeaningをclearにすることとして説明しています。
さっきのinstructionなら：
So, I should send Maya the newest available draft before lunch.
これなら、original syntaxを暗唱していません。meaningを自分で再構成しています。
British Councilのguidanceでも、key informationを in other words などで別の言葉にすることが理解を助ける方法として紹介されています。
CHECK：「この理解で合っている？」の出口を作る
TeachingEnglishのChecking comprehensionでは、単に Do you understand? と聞くだけではactual understandingを確認しにくいと説明されています。Concept checkingでも、meaningを説明させる・instructionを言い直させるなど、理解が見えるcheckが重視されています。

British Council–EAQUALSのCore Inventoryにも、Is this what you are saying?、Are you saying that…?、Do you mean…? のようなlistener-side checking formsがあります。
ADJUST：correctionが来たら、最終versionを一度だけ更新する
理解確認の価値は、間違いをゼロに見せることではありません。間違いがあったら、その場で見えることです。
You: So, I should send Maya the newest draft before lunch, right?
Speaker: Almost. Send it to Nora, not Maya.
You: Got it — the newest draft goes to Nora before lunch.
ここでADJUSTまで行けば、conversationの最後に残るunderstandingは修正版です。

もしMayaが消えたらWHOを落としています。newest available が消えたらCONDITIONを落としています。meaningを短くしても、important detailまで削らないのがpointです。
何を言い直すべき？ consequenceのあるdetailを優先する
Cambridgeのconfirmには、arrangementやnumbersなどをcertainにする用法があります。実際のconversationでも、結果が変わるdetailほど明示的に返す価値があります。

逆にcasual conversationで毎sentenceをparaphraseすると不自然です。確認するのは、誤解するとaction・schedule・agreementが変わるところを中心にします。

Original practice example
So I should send the draft first, and you review it after lunch. Is that right?
Speakerの長いinstructionをACTIONとORDERへcompressして、自分のwordsで返しています。
workplaceでtask orderを確認する場面。
「つまり、私が先にドラフトを送り、あなたは昼食後にレビューするんですよね？」
同じmeaningを別のwordsでもう一度paraphraseしてください。
Original practice example
If I understood correctly, I need to arrive 15 minutes early and bring my ID.
appointment instructionからWHENとREQUIRED ITEMを抜いています。
clinic、office、appointmentで準備事項を確認する場面。
「理解が合っていれば、15分早く着いて身分証を持っていく必要があります。」
最後に Is that correct? を足してcheckしてください。
Original practice example
Are you saying that we should wait until the client replies?
Long explanationのmain decisionを一つのmeaningへreduceして確認します。
meetingやproject discussionでnext actionを確認する場面。
「クライアントが返事をするまで待つ、ということですか？」
speakerが “Not exactly” と返した想定で、correction後のADJUSTを作ってください。
Original practice example
Just to confirm, the refund will go back to the same card within five business days.
transaction detailを、ここではDESTINATIONとTIMEへ絞ってread backしています。
customer serviceで返金条件を確認する場面。
「確認ですが、返金は同じカードに5営業日以内で戻るんですね。」
自分が本当に必要なcore detailだけ残して言い直してください。

Final drill：7 cue wordsだけでmeaningを返す
長いinstructionを一度だけ読みます。そのあとoriginalを隠し、最大7つのcue wordsだけ残します。
もしrestatementを作る時点でmeaning自体に大きなuncertaintyが残っているなら、無理にconfirmationへ進まず、clarificationへ戻ります。理解確認はguessをもっと自信ありげに言う作業ではありません。
同じwordsを返さない。meaningを返す。 理解したつもりを、短いparaphraseで外に出す。相手が直せる形にしてから、次のactionへ進めばいい。
