英語の雑談練習｜話しかけて、相手の一言から会話を続ける
英語で雑談を始めても次の一言で止まる人へ。OPEN→CATCH→ECHO→FOLLOW→SHAREで、相手の返答からdetailを拾い、同じthreadを自然に続ける練習をします。
small talkを続けるコツは、新しいtopicを毎回考えることではありません。相手のlast sentenceから一つのdetailを拾い、そのdetailにreaction・follow-up・small shareをつなげます。
相手が I went hiking this weekend. と言ったのに、次の質問が Where are you from?。文法は正しい。でもconversationは急に別の駅へ行きます。topicを探さない。detailを拾う。
- OPEN：contextに合う一言で始める
- CATCH：replyから一つのdetailを拾う
- ECHO：短いreactionで「聞いた」を見せる
- FOLLOW：同じdetailに一つfollow-up
- SHARE：関連する自分のdetailを少し返す
OPEN：最初の一言はsimpleでいい
British CouncilのKeeping a conversation goingでは、What’s new?、How’s it going?、How about you? などがconversationを続けるphrasesとして使われています。

OPENはconversationを始めるだけ。skillの本番は、相手が何か答えたあとです。
CATCH：replyの中から一つだけ拾う
Cambridge Grammarのfollow-up questionsでは、conversationで相手が今言ったことに対してshort questionを返すことが多いと説明されています。
A: I went hiking this weekend.
ここでCATCHするdetailは hiking や this weekend。次のturnはそこから作れます。
ECHO：まず短く反応する
reactionが一つ入るだけで、questionが“情報回収”ではなくlistening responseになります。British Councilのlessonでは I know what you mean.、Really? I didn’t know that! などが使われています。
- Oh, nice.
- Really?
- That sounds fun.
- I know what you mean.
ただしreactionはnewsに合うものを選びます。bad newsに明るい That’s great! を置く、のようなmechanical responseは避けます。
FOLLOW：same threadを一段だけ深くする

“Where are you from?” “What do you do?” “Do you have siblings?” とunrelated questionsを連射すると、conversationよりquestionnaireに近づきます。同じthreadを一回伸ばすだけで十分です。
SHARE：質問だけにしない
follow-upのあと、relatedな自分のdetailを少し返すとexchangeになります。
- I haven’t been hiking for ages.
- I’ve lived around here for about a year.
- I’ve always wanted to visit Lisbon.
SHAREは自分の長いstoryへ乗っ取ることではありません。一つ返したら、また相手のturnを残します。

British Councilのsmall-talk transcriptでも、weekendの話から Tell us about it.、What did you all do?、brief reactionsへthreadが伸びています。

Original practice example
I tried a new Korean restaurant yesterday.
CATCHは Korean restaurant。ECHO → FOLLOWなら Oh, nice. What did you have? のようにsame threadへ進めます。
coworkerやclassmateとのfood small talk。
「昨日、新しい韓国料理店に行ってみました。」
reaction + one follow-up + related SHAREを作ってください。
Original practice example
My daughter just started swimming lessons.
CATCHは swimming lessons。How’s she finding them? のようにreplyのdetailを使います。
parentsやneighborsとのcasual conversation。
「娘がちょうど水泳教室を始めました。」
unrelated family questionへ飛ばず、swimming threadを一回伸ばしてください。
Original practice example
I’ve got a really busy week at work.
negative/neutral newsならreactionも調整します。Oh, that sounds tiring. Is there a big deadline? のようにtoneを合わせます。
workplace small talk。
「今週は仕事がかなり忙しいです。」
happy reactionをmechanically使わず、appropriate ECHOを選んでください。
Original practice example
I’m visiting Prague next month.
Prague or next month をCATCHし、Have you been before? のようなconnected follow-upへ進めます。
travel small talk。
「来月プラハへ行きます。」
CATCHしたdetailを明示してからnext turnを言ってください。

Final drill：next turnを一語から作る
相手のreplyが短く閉じていたら、無理に質問を重ねなくて大丈夫です。topicを軽く変える、または会話を終える選択も自然です。そして相手の言ったこと自体が分からなかったなら、follow-upをguessせずclarificationへ切り替えます。
topicを探さない。detailを拾う。 small talkの次のturnは、あなたのquestion listより相手のlast sentenceにあることが多いです。
