Can you・Could you・Would you mindで迷う人へ。

Can you send me the file?。

  1. RELATIONSHIP:friend / coworker / manager / stranger

RelationshipStarting pointExample
close friend / familiar coworkersimple, direct request can be naturalCan you hold this for a second?
coworker / less familiar personneutral-polite wording is often usefulCould you send me the latest file, please?
stranger / service contextclear request + openerExcuse me, could you tell me where platform four is?
manager → employeefirst decide whether it is a favor or a requirementwording depends on real choice

  • Low burden: Can you hold this for a second?
  • Ordinary work request: Could you send me the file later today?
  • Bigger favor: Would you mind covering my shift on Friday?

CambridgeのRequestsには、can / couldWould you mind…?Do you think you could…?

Real favorのmodel

Would you mind covering my shift on Friday? It’s completely fine if you can’t.

Real requirementのmodel

Please send the final version by 3 p.m.

deadlineが本当にrequiredなら、「Would you mind…?」

Urgent needのmodel

I need a doctor.

Cambridgeも I need...

WORDING:Can / Could / Would you mind をcontextで選ぶ

British CouncilのRequests, offers and invitationsでは、Could you…? / Would you…? をpolite request forms、Can you…? / Will you…?

friendへのtiny favorなら Can you…?

Would you mind + -ing

  • Would you mind opening the window?
  • Would you mind checking this for me?

Would you mind to open...

Could you send me the file, please?

Same words, two voices

  • No worries. Thanks anyway.
  • That’s fine. I’ll ask someone else.
  • No problem. Would another day work better? — alternative

5-case request lab

5つのrequest practice card

Original practice example

Can you hold this for a second?

Close relationship + very small burdenならsimple requestがfitしやすい。

Original practice example

Could you send me the latest file later today, please?

ordinary coworker request。

Original practice example

Would you mind covering my shift on Friday? It’s completely fine if you can’t.

Original practice example

Please send the final version by 3 p.m.

Original practice example

I need a doctor.

Listener interpretationIntentNatural alternativeContext note
Would you mind to open the window?wrongrequestの意図は分かりますが、mind の後ろのformが違います。 Would you mind opening the window?Cambridgeは would you mind + -ing を示しています。
Can you please to send the file?wrongfileを送ってほしい意味は分かりますが、modalの後ろに to は置きません。 Can you please send the file?relationship/burden次第で Could you...
I want you to send this today.grammatically valid with a different meaningspeakerのdesire/direct instructionが前面に出ます。 Could you send this today, please?authority/requirement contextならよりdirectなinstruction自体が適切な場合があります。
Please could you send me the file?context-dependentpolite requestとして成立しますが、front-position please はdeliveryによってstrongerに聞こえることがあります。 Could you send me the file, please?originalは文法的にvalid。

Final builder:

RELATIONSHIP → BURDEN → CHOICE → WORDING → VOICE
