でも会話で do a decision が出る。足りないのはword数ではなくpartnerです。wordを覚えるより、partnerを一緒に取り出せるか。
- ANCHOR:key wordを一つ決める
- PARTNER:よく一緒に使うwordを確認する
- FRAME:short sentenceへ入れる
- RETRIEVE:partnerを隠して思い出す
- SPEAK:whole chunkを自分のsentenceで言う
ANCHOR:最初にone wordだけ選ぶ
Cambridge Dictionaryのcollocationは、二つ以上のwordsがよく一緒に使われ、naturalに聞こえる組み合わせとして説明されています。
このlessonでは、単語帳のone wordをanchorにします。
| Anchor | Question |
|---|---|
| Anchor | Common partner | Chunk |
|---|---|---|
| decision | make | make a decision |
| rain | heavy | heavy rain |
| coffee | strong | strong coffee |
| attention | pay | pay attention |
collocationはall-or-nothingのruleではありません。Cambridge Grammarもstrong/weak collocationsを区別しています。つまり「このpartner以外は全部grammar error」と考えるのではなく、このmeaning/contextではどのpairがtypicalかを見るのが大事です。
FRAME:chunkをshort sentenceへ入れる
British Council TeachingEnglishのLexical approachでは、collocationsやfixed phrasesで作られるchunksをlanguage unitsとして扱います。
chunkだけ覚えたら、すぐshort frameへ。
- I need to make a decision today.
- We had heavy rain last night.
- I need strong coffee this morning.
- Please pay attention to the last part.
single-word flashcardだけでsentenceを毎回組み立てるのは、家具を毎朝DIYするようなものです。FRAMEでは、reusable chunkをそのまま使える形にします。
RETRIEVE:partnerを隠して、先に思い出す
British CouncilのChunksは、collocationsのようなchunksを見つけてrecordするpracticeを紹介しています。このarticleでは、recordしたあとにpartnerを隠します。
答えを見る前にpartnerを言ってください。
decision → ___ a decision
make a decision
rain → ___ rain
heavy rain
coffee → ___ coffee
strong coffee
attention → ___ attention
pay attention
見るだけより、partnerを一度失ってから取り戻す。これがRETRIEVEです。
SPEAK:retrieved chunkを自分のsentenceへ入れる
British CouncilのLexical chunkでは、chunksを分析し、他のcontextsでどう使われるか考えるpracticeが紹介されています。
今度はyour turnです。
| Chunk | Personal prompt | Example |
|---|---|---|
| make a decision | 今日決めることは? | I need to make a decision about the hotel today. |
| heavy rain | 最近のweatherは? | We had heavy rain on Sunday. |
| strong coffee | 朝何を飲む? | I usually make strong coffee in the morning. |
| pay attention | 何に注意したい? | I need to pay attention to the dates. |
Collocation retrieval lab:decisionからsentenceまで
Anchor: decision
Partner
make a decision
Model frame
I need to make a decision today.
最後はtodayのままコピーしないで、自分のtopicへ変えてください。
4つのcollocation practice card
Original practice example
I need to make a decision before Friday.
decisionをsingle wordではなくmake a decisionでretrieveします。
work/travel/purchaseなど何かを決める場面。
「金曜までに決めないといけません。」
before Fridayを自分のdeadlineへ変えてください。
Original practice example
The heavy rain delayed our train.
heavy rainをadjective+noun chunkとして保存します。
weatherがtravelやplanに影響した場面。
「大雨で電車が遅れました。」
trainをflight / game / tripにswapしてください。
Original practice example
I need a strong coffee this morning.
strong coffeeをwhole pairでretrieveします。strongのgeneral meaningだけからpartnerをguessしません。
朝・cafe・work breakでcoffeeについて話す場面。
「今朝は濃いコーヒーが必要です。」
needをusually drink / madeへ変えてsentenceを作ってください。
Original practice example
Please pay close attention to the final number.
pay attentionをverb+noun chunkで覚え、closeを足したpatternもrecogniseします。
number/date/instructionを聞き間違えたくない場面。
「最後の数字によく注意してください。」
final numberをname / date / instructionへ変えてください。
Collocation mistakeを「grammar error」だけで片づけない
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I need to do a decision. | unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic | 「決定する必要がある」というmeaningはかなり推測できますが、ordinary Englishのcollocationとして不自然です。 | 決定する | I need to make a decision. | do自体がwrong wordというより、このnounとのpartnershipが問題です。 |
| We had strong rain all night. | unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic | 激しいrainという意味は分かりますが、ordinary collocationとしてはuntypicalです。 | 大雨だった | We had heavy rain all night. | Cambridge Grammarもheavy rainをtypical exampleとして示します。 |
| This is powerful coffee. | context-dependent | coffeeのeffectやmarketing-style strengthを強調する意味なら成立し得ますが、taste/strengthのordinary descriptionとしてはmarkedです。 | 濃い・strong coffeeと言う | This is strong coffee. | Originalをuniversally wrongとはしません。ordinary collocationをlearner defaultにします。 |
| Let’s make a break. | grammatically valid with a different meaning | make a breakはrestではなく、escape/separationなど別のmeaningを示すcontextsがあります。 | 休憩する | Let’s take a break. | restのintentならtake a breakをchunkとして覚えます。 |
