Thanks! Thanks for staying late to help me. That saved me a lot of time.

  1. NOTICE:helpful act
  4. THANK:fitting gratitude form

SituationGenericNAME the act
coworker stayed lateThanks. Thanks for staying late to help me.
friend picked you upThank you.Thank you for picking me up.
teacher explained againThanks. Thanks for explaining that again.
neighbor took your packageThank you.Thank you for taking the package for me.

veryよりspecific。 Plain Thank youは十分natural。

  • Thanks for staying late to help me. That saved me a lot of time.
  • Thank you for sending the notes. I could catch up much faster.
  • Thanks for changing the time. That made things much easier for me.

THANK:thank you / thanks / appreciate をjobで分ける

Cambridge GrammarのPlease and thank youでは、thanksthank you よりinformalだと説明されています。また thank you for / thanks for の後ろにはnounや-ing formを置けます。

Gratitude form
FormUseful defaultExample
Thanks for + -ingcasual / everydayThanks for helping me with this.
Thank you for + -ingneutral/politeThank you for taking the time to explain it.
I really appreciate + noun/objectgratitudeをexplicitにするI really appreciate your help.

We really appreciate all the help...

Thank you very muchThanks a lot などを示しますが、Thank you a lot はstandard exampleではありません。

You’re welcomeNot at allNo problem

ReplyPractical feelExample exchange
You’re welcome.neutral, widely usableThanks for your help. — You’re welcome.
No problem.casual/everydayThanks for waiting. — No problem.
Not at all.polite reply optionThank you for your help. — Not at all.

NOTICE → NAME → IMPACT → THANK → RETURN
Model exchange

A: Thank you for staying late to help me. That saved me a lot of time.

B: No problem. I’m glad it helped.

4つのgratitude practice card

Original practice example

Thanks for sending me the notes. They helped me catch up.

meeting/class notesを送ってもらった場面。

Original practice example

Thank you for explaining that again. I understand it much better now.

teacher/colleagueがもう一度説明してくれた場面。

Original practice example

I really appreciate your flexibility.

Original practice example

No problem. I’m glad I could help.

RETURN role。

You’re welcome / Not at allで別replyを作ってください。

thank/appreciate/replyのrepair
Original分類Listener interpretationIntentNatural alternativeContext note
Thank you a lot.unusual/overly formal/non-idiomaticstrong gratitudeの意図は分かりますが、standard strengthening patternではありません。 Thank you very much. / Thanks a lot.
I appreciate for your help.wronggratitudeは分かりますが、appreciateのobject patternが崩れています。 I appreciate your help.appreciate takes an object in this gratitude use.
Thank you for help me.wronghelpへのgratitudeは伝わりますが、forの後ろのverb formが違います。 Thank you for helping me.thank you for + -ing。
Thank you. You’re welcome. / No problem.Cambridge explicitly says not to use please as the reply to thanks.

自分の3つのthank-you sentencesから very / so much / a lot などintensity wordsを一度外し、その代わりにspecific actかimpactを一つ足します。

NOTICE → NAME → IMPACT → THANK → RETURN
