“I think this policy is effective.”。

Claim → Support → Qualify → Respond

  • Support:reason、reading、data、example
  • Qualify:evidence

Claim:

Original practice example

My main point is that the policy may reduce access for some students.

My main point is that ...

policy / reduce access / some students

I think ...

Original practice example

One reason is that the requirement adds an extra cost.

evidenceがあるなら、たとえば “In the reading, the authors found that…”

University of Manchester Academic Phrasebank

Original practice example

This example supports the claim, but it doesn’t show that the same effect occurs in every context.

Original practice example

The results suggest a relationship, but they don’t establish causation.

Original practice example

I agree with that point, and I’d add that the sample is quite narrow.

the sample is quite narrow

Original practice example

I see the argument, but I’m not sure the evidence supports such a broad conclusion.

such a broad conclusion

Respond:

Original practice example

If I understand your question correctly, you’re asking whether the result applies beyond this sample.

Original practice example

The study doesn’t answer that directly, so I’d limit the claim to this sample.

  • A. This proves that all students prefer the new method.
  • B. This suggests that the new method may work well for some students in this sample.
  • C. The data means nothing.

  • A. X causes Y.
  • B. The results show an association between X and Y, but they don’t establish causation.
  • C. There is definitely no relationship.

  • A. Then my whole argument is wrong.
  • B. That example suggests I need to narrow the claim.
  • C. That example doesn’t matter.

  • A. Yes, it probably applies there too.
  • B. The data doesn’t answer that directly, so I’d limit the claim to the population we studied.
  • C. I don’t know anything about that.

Academic discussion

This proves that the policy always works. context-dependent evidenceがuniversal effectivenessを確立したという非常に強いclaimです。 This evidence suggests that the policy can be effective in this context.
I totally disagree with you. context-dependent I’m not sure the evidence supports that conclusion.
According to me, the sample is too small. unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic personal opinionの意味は推測できますが、広く自然なacademic Englishとしては不自然に響きやすいです。 In my view, the sample is too small.
This is 100% true. grammatically valid with a different meaning exceptionやuncertaintyがない完全なcertaintyを主張します。 The evidence strongly supports this interpretation.
I don’t know, so I can’t answer. context-dependent The study doesn’t answer that directly, so I’d limit the claim to this sample.

proves / shows / suggests / may
