- MEANING:past / plural / third-person agreement のどれか確認する
- BASE SOUND:base formを言い、最後のsoundを確認する
- CLASS:-edなら /t d ɪd/、-sなら /s z ɪz/ を選ぶ
- ATTACH:endingを付ける。/ɪd, ɪz/以外でextra vowelを足さない
- TEST MEANING:short sentenceでgrammar informationが残るか確認する
-ed:最後のletterではなく、baseの最後のsoundを見る
Cambridge GrammarのPast simple: pronunciation of -edでは、regular pastの-edを次の3classに分けています。
| Ending | Baseの最後 | Examples | Extra syllable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| /t/ | /t/以外のvoiceless consonant | work → worked, look → looked | No |
| /d/ | /d/以外のvoiced consonant または vowel | move → moved, play → played | No |
| /ɪd/ | /t/ または /d/ | want → wanted, need → needed | Yes |
だから見るのは最後の文字ではなく最後のsoundです。たとえば move はletterとしてはeで終わりますが、base pronunciationの最後は/v/。voiced soundなので moved の-edは/d/です。
BBC Learning EnglishのThe Pronunciation Loungeも、confused /d/、liked /t/、started /ɪd/ のように3classをhear → recognise → produceの流れで扱っています。
- worked → /t/。baseの/k/はvoiceless。
- moved → /d/。baseの/v/はvoiced。
- wanted → /ɪd/。baseが/t/で終わるのでextra syllableが入る。
-s の答え
- books → /s/。baseの/k/はvoiceless。
- bags → /z/。baseの/g/はvoiced。
- watches → /ɪz/。sibilant系のendingのあとでextra syllableが入る。
-s:pluralでもthird-personでも、sound classは同じ考え方
British CouncilのSnake or fly?では、plural nounsとthird-person verbsのfinal -sを /s/、/z/、/ɪz/ の3groupで練習しています。
| Ending | Baseの最後 | Examples | Extra syllable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| /s/ | non-sibilant voiceless sound | books, cats, walks | No |
| /z/ | vowel または non-sibilant voiced sound | days, bags, goes | No |
| /ɪz/ | sibilant系のsound | watches, buses, boxes | Yes |
Cambridge GrammarのNouns: formも、boxes、watches、buses のようなplural -esを/ɪz/で示しています。
ここでもspellingだけに頼りません。たとえば laugh はghで終わりますが、baseのfinal soundは/f/。だから laughs の-sは/s/ classです。
MEANING:同じ-s soundでもgrammar jobは違う
| Sentence | Ending job | What changes? |
|---|---|---|
| one bag → two bags | plural | number |
| I watch → she watches | third-person singular | subject-verb agreement |
| I work → I worked | regular past | tense/time reference |
endingを聞こえさせる目的は「発音がきれい」に見せることだけではありません。小さいsoundがsentenceのgrammar informationを運んでいます。
TEST MEANING:endingを外したら、何が変わって聞こえる?
CambridgeのConsonant Clusters and Intelligibilityでは、final clustersに-edや-sのようなgrammatical informationが含まれること、cluster deletionやvowel insertionがword identificationに影響し得ることが扱われています。
- I work late. → I worked late yesterday.
- one bag → two bags
- I watch TV. → She watches TV.
Original practice example
I worked late yesterday.
work ends in voiceless /k/, so regular past -ed is /t/. Do not add an extra syllable.
昨日の仕事について話す場面。
「昨日は遅くまで働きました。」
work → worked → I worked late yesterday の順に言ってください。
Original practice example
We moved last month.
move ends in voiced /v/, so regular past -ed is /d/.
引っ越しや過去の出来事を説明する場面。
「先月引っ越しました。」
move → moved で/d/を短くattachし、extra vowelを足さないでください。
Original practice example
They wanted more time.
want ends in /t/, so regular past -ed is /ɪd/ and adds a syllable.
交渉、仕事、予定について過去の希望を説明する場面。
「彼らはもっと時間を欲しがっていました。」
want → wanted でsyllable countが増えることを確認してください。
Original practice example
The cats sleep near the bags.
cats has /s/ after voiceless /t/; bags has /z/ after voiced /g/. Both endings mark plural number.
複数の物・動物について説明する場面。
「猫たちはバッグの近くで寝ています。」
cat/cats と bag/bags をcontrastしてからsentenceへ入れてください。
Original practice example
She watches the buses every morning.
watches and buses both use /ɪz/ in these regular forms. The verb ending marks third-person agreement; the noun ending marks plural.
毎日のroutineと複数の交通手段について話す場面。
「彼女は毎朝バスを見ています。」
watch → watches と bus → buses でextra syllableを保ってください。
Grammar endingを落とすmistakeも一緒に修理する
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yesterday I work late. | wrong | Yesterday suggests past time, but the verb form is present/base. | 昨日遅くまで働いた | Yesterday I worked late. | Regular past requires -ed here. |
| There are two bag by the door. | wrong | Two signals plural, but the noun remains singular. | ドアのそばにバッグが2つある | There are two bags by the door. | Plural -s carries number information. |
| She watch the news every evening. | wrong | The habitual meaning is clear, but third-person singular agreement is missing. | 彼女は毎晩ニュースを見る | She watches the news every evening. | watches has /ɪz/ in this form. |
| The -ed sounds as /t/. | wrong | The intended pronunciation explanation is understandable, but the construction is unnatural. | -ed endingが/t/と発音されると言う | The -ed ending is pronounced /t/. | The -ed ending sounds like /t/. can also work in a less technical explanation. |
TRANSFER:新しいregular formを5手で判定する
小さいendingだから、最後に適当に足すのではありません。先にmeaning、次に最後のsound。 そこからclassを選び、sentenceまで運ぶ。そうすると-ed/-sは暗記表ではなく、listenerへgrammarを届けるsoundになります。
