thirteen or thirty?
- WRITE:13 / 30 / 5:40 / 7 April
- LABEL:quantity / price / time / date
Cambridge Dictionaryのdictionary pronunciationでは、thirteen はUK /θɜːˈtiːn/、US /θɝːˈtiːn/ でsecond syllableにprimary stressがあります。一方、thirty はUK /ˈθɜː.ti/、US /ˈθɝː.t̬i/ でfirst syllableにprimary stressがあります。
| Number | Practice marking | Listen for |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | thir-TEEN | second syllableがdictionary baselineでprominent。endingも /iːn/。 |
| 30 | THIR-ty | first syllableがdictionary baselineでprominent。
Sorry, did you say thirteen — one three — or thirty — three zero?
WRITE → LABEL:
| Heard/interpreted | WRITE | LABEL |
|---|---|---|
| thirteen euros | €13 | price |
| three thirty | 3:30 | time |
| the seventh of April | 7 April | date |
| thirty people | 30 | quantity |
British Council LearnEnglishでは、What time is it? の中で twenty-five to six、ten past five、a quarter past six、twenty past six などのtime expressionsが使われています。またWhen (time and dates)には nine thirty のようなclock readingもあります。
| Heard | Write | Possible read-back |
|---|---|---|
| twenty to six | 5:40 | So that’s five forty, right? |
| a quarter past six | 6:15 | Just to confirm, six fifteen? |
| nine thirty | 9:30 | Nine thirty, correct? |
3:30 は three thirty とも、variety/contextによっては half past three とも言えます。
Cambridge GrammarのDatesでは、British Englishではday-month-year、American Englishではmonth-day-yearが一般的だと説明されています。
同じCambridge resourceでは、spoken datesとして the first of June や June the first のような形も示されています。
Do you mean July fourth or the seventh of April?
READ BACK → CONFIRM:
Could you say that again, please?、Can you repeat that more slowly, please?、Do you mean ...?
- Sorry, did you say thirteen or thirty?
- Could you repeat the time more slowly, please?
- So that’s five forty, right?
- Do you mean July fourth or the seventh of April?
3-case read-back lab
A:13 / 30
Sorry, did you say thirteen — one three — or thirty — three zero?
B:twenty to six
5:40とwriteして、So that’s five forty, right?
C:7/4
Do you mean July fourth or the seventh of April?
4つのnumber practice card
Original practice example
It’s thirteen euros, not thirty.
So that’s thirteen euros, right?
Original practice example
The appointment is at twenty to six.
twenty to six を5:40へWRITEし、別formatでREAD BACKします。
Just to confirm, that’s five forty?
Original practice example
The meeting is at three thirty p.m.
timeを3:30 p.m.とwriteし、a.m./p.m.
Three thirty p.m., correct?
Original practice example
Your appointment is on the seventh of April.
April seventh, right?
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What hour is the meeting? | 会議の時刻を聞く | What time is the meeting? | At what time is the meeting? |
| The meeting is in three thirty. | wrong | 3:30というtimeは分かりますが、clock timeには通常 at を使います。 | 3:30に会議がある | The meeting is at three thirty. | British Councilもclock timesに at を使います。 |
| My appointment is on July seven. | ordinary spoken Englishで7月7日と言う | My appointment is on July seventh. | on the seventh of July |
| Is it seven four? | 7/4の日付を確認する | Do you mean July fourth or the seventh of April?
