Speaking Mode — Think in the Target Language, Then Match the Actor
(Lives under: Language learning → Features → Fluency Gym → Speaking Mode)
Overview
Speaking Mode turns every line into a fast “think → speak → check → imitate” loop. Your native-language subtitle appears first, the video auto-pauses, and the target-language subtitle is blurred. You have X seconds to say the line aloud in the target language. After the timer, the correct line reveals, you self-check, then the actor’s voice plays so you can shadow their pronunciation and intonation. It’s active recall + real dialogue—perfect for building confident, natural speech.
What you’ll do
- See native subtitle → produce the target sentence
- After a short pause → target subtitle reveals for self-check
- Practice pronunciation & intonation, then hear the actor and copy
- Repeat in short bursts for compounding fluency
Today’s outcomes Install Funfluen → Open Gym tab → Turn on Fluency Gym → Start Speaking Mode → Speak before reveal → Compare & shadow actor → Complete first session

- Try once more to get even closer, then shadow the actor for rhythm and melody.
- Do a few lines—you’ll feel braver and faster every time.
Guides
Guide 1 — The Speak-Before-Reveal Loop (Core Flow) Why it works: Active recall forces real production, not guesswork. How it works:
- Native subtitle shows → video auto-pauses; target subtitle is blurred.
- You get X seconds to say the entire line in the target language.
- Reveal: Target subtitle unblurs; compare wording and word order.
- Play: Resume the scene; lock in the correct phrasing. Pro tip: If you missed parts, say the exact line once, then try your own paraphrase.
Guide 2 — Build the Sentence (Word Order & Grammar) Focus on structure: subject → verb → objects → extras (time/place). Mini-drill:
- First attempt = your best guess (don’t freeze).
- Reveal → spot the smallest difference (preposition, tense, article).
- Say the corrected line once, then swap one word to make your version.
Guide 3 — Pronunciation & Intonation (Sound Natural) Targets:
- Stress: Emphasize key content words.
- Melody: Follow the rise/fall of the actor’s line.
- Linking: Join words naturally (“did you” → “didja”).
- Chunking: Speak in short, meaningful groups. Drill: Slow clear pass → normal-speed pass → quick mirror of the actor.
Guide 4 — Shadow & Echo with the Actor (Timing & Rhythm)
- Shadow: Speak with the actor, matching timing and energy.
- Echo: Actor first, you immediately after. Two tight reps (shadow + echo) beat one long, tiring attempt.
Guide 5 — Tune the Challenge (Pause & Hints) Customize → Pause duration (X seconds):
- New to speaking? Use a longer pause to think.
- Getting faster? Shorten it to push fluency. Blurred subtitle hint: Only peek if truly stuck—struggle first, then peek.
Guide 6 — Momentum & Micro-Wins (Stay Consistent) Set a micro-goal per session: 10 lines with speak-before-reveal. Track a tiny improvement: faster start, fewer word-order fixes, smoother rhythm.
FAQs by Feature
Subtitle Order, Blur & Timing
Q: Why does my native subtitle show first and the other one blur? A: To make you think and speak before seeing the answer—this is what builds fluency.
Q: How long do I have to speak? A: You control it. In Customize, set the pause duration (X seconds) for your thinking time.
Q: What happens after the timer? A: The target subtitle reveals so you can self-check, then the video continues.
Speaking Quality & Practice
Q: Should I aim for perfect grammar or natural sound? A: Start with a complete sentence, then quickly focus on rhythm, stress, and melody.
Q: How many repetitions per line? A: One compare pass, then shadow + echo (two quick reps) is ideal.
Q: Do I need a microphone? A: Speaking out loud is enough. Use a mic only if you want to record yourself for self-review.
Difficulty & Confidence
Q: I freeze when I see the native subtitle. What now? A: Say anything plausible in the target language. Partial output beats silence—the reveal will guide you.
Q: How do I get better faster? A: Use a slightly challenging pause, avoid peeking, and keep sessions short and frequent.
