The short answer

Polish makes TH, V/W, final voicing, and selected English vowel contrasts worth checking, but each needs more than one cue: test the contrast in your own speech before you drill it.

If your V/W lesson begins with “Polish has no W,” it has already tripped over the first fact: modern Polish has a /w/-like labial-velar approximant. English V/W can still be worth checking—but the useful question is not “Can a Polish mouth make W?” It is “Which movement did I use in this word?”

We will use the same rule for TH, final voicing, and vowels: one cue is never the whole contrast. Pair the target, feel the movement, notice the timing, then link it into a phrase. If both useful signals already hold, skip the repair.

Start here: the Two-Signal Scan

TH — PLACE + AIR

If your target model uses /θ/ and /ð/, listen to think and this. Can you hear friction at or near the teeth? In your own recording, is the airflow continuous rather than turning into a stop or another fricative category?

V/W — CONTACT + GLIDE

Record vest — west or vine — wine if your target model distinguishes them. For /v/, do your upper teeth lightly contact the lower lip with friction? For /w/, do your lips round and glide into the vowel without that teeth-to-lip contact?

FINAL VOICE — RHYME + BOUNDARY

Choose a verified pair such as safe — save or bet — bed. First compare the whole rhyme—the preceding vowel plus final consonant. Then place the voiced-final word before a vowel-initial next word, for example save it. Does the lexical contrast survive the boundary?

VOWEL — QUALITY + TIME

If your chosen model distinguishes the vowel categories in ship and sheep, listen to both before recording them. Does the vowel itself differ in quality, not just duration? Does your timing also broadly follow the same target model?

Polish gives you contrasts to inspect—not a completed accent profile

The first useful surprise is /w/. A 2023 Second Language Research study on cross-linguistic phonological influence explicitly treats /w/ as present in both Polish and English. The same study also describes Polish syllable-final obstruent devoicing versus an English final voicing contrast, while emphasizing feature-by-feature influence and substantial individual variation.

A standard phonetic description of Polish in the Journal of the International Phonetic Association gives the broader language-system context. In modern Polish, the letter ł is commonly associated with a /w/-like labial-velar approximant, while orthographic w normally represents /v/. That means an English V/W difficulty, when it exists, does not need the story “your language cannot make W.”

Your English can also reflect years of bilingual use, where you learned English, which accents you hear, other languages you speak, reading habits, and deliberate pronunciation choices. A population comparison tells us what is worth checking. Your recording decides whether it is worth training.

Before training, set the context

V/W — the letter is not the movement

Polish already gives many speakers access to a /w/-like movement. The interesting question is whether English reading, category retrieval, or your current habit sends the right movement into the right English word.

For the English target used in this exercise:

Ignore the letter for a moment. Same-looking alphabet territory can be a tiny ambush: Polish w normally points you toward /v/, while English w usually points you toward /w/. The repair is movement control, not alphabet guilt.

TH — do not guess which substitute you use

English /θ/ and /ð/ are worth screening for Polish-speaking learners, but “Polish speakers say S/Z for TH” is not a safe personal diagnosis.

Polish-specific work by Gonet and Pietrón on English interdental fricatives in the speech of Polish learners documents multiple possible non-target realizations and conditioning rather than one universal replacement. The study is older, so it should not be turned into a current prevalence claim. Its useful lesson still holds: inspect your category before choosing your repair.

Signal 1: PLACE

For target models using English dental/interdental fricatives, the tongue is placed lightly at or close to the teeth. Exact tongue visibility varies by speaker and target model; “stick your tongue out dramatically” is not the skill.

Signal 2: AIR

The constriction leaves a narrow passage for continuous friction. For /θ/, the target is voiceless in words such as think. For /ð/, voicing is added in words such as this.

Perception before production

  1. Listen to a trusted model of think and this.
  2. Ask whether you hear continuous dental/interdental friction.
  3. Record your own version.
  4. Do not label it /s/, /t/, /f/, or another category until you actually hear or feel what happened.
  5. If the target is audible to you but your production differs, build the friction slowly and then add the vowel.

Useful phrase transfer: think twice, this time, then your own sentence. If the target disappears only in the phrase, train the transition rather than repeating the isolated word another fifty times.

Final voicing — the last millisecond is not the whole word

Polish word-final obstruent devoicing makes English meaning contrasts such as safe — save and bet — bed sensible to test. But “keep the final consonant fully voiced” is too crude a repair command.

Polish-English research in Research in Language on initial glottalization and final devoicing studied word-final voiced obstruents before vowel-initial words. The work links final-devoicing behavior with word-boundary timing and discusses English-style liaison/linking as relevant in the studied target context.

That does not mean every English accent requires one identical linking behavior. It does mean the practical target is larger than the final consonant alone: listen across the rhyme and across the next-word boundary.

Signal 1: RHYME

Compare the preceding vowel plus the final consonant as a package. English final-voicing contrasts can be carried by several interacting cues. Do not demand one giant buzz from the final segment.

Signal 2: BOUNDARY

Check what happens when the next word starts. Try:

  • save → save it
  • need → need another minute
  • bed → bed is ready

If the contrast holds in isolation but collapses when the next vowel arrives, the problem is coordination at the boundary, not inability to pronounce the word.

The phrase-boundary drill

  1. Listen to one trusted target pair, for example safe — save.
  2. Say both words slowly without trying to exaggerate voicing.
  3. Move to safe option — save it.
  4. Keep the target contrast while shortening any pause before the next word.
  5. Record a useful sentence at normal speed.

Heroic amounts of final voicing are not the goal. Preserving the meaning contrast is.

Vowel contrasts — the stopwatch is not the vowel

The supplied topic used the phrase “vowel length.” That is a real part of English phonetics, but it is not a safe complete lesson for Polish-speaking learners.

A 2022 Journal of Slavic Linguistics study compared Polish and Croatian learners’ perception of English tense-lax vowel contrasts. In that AXB task, Polish learners relied predominantly on vowel quality, while the Croatian group—whose L1 uses phonemic vowel length—relied more heavily on duration. Cue use also developed with proficiency.

An acoustic study of L1 Polish learners acquiring Southern British English vowels likewise examines spectral, temporal, and dynamic organization. The practical message is not “quality matters, time does not.” It is: quality and timing belong together.

Signal 1: QUALITY

For a target model that distinguishes the vowels in ship and sheep, listen for a difference in the vowel category itself. Tongue position and the acoustic shape of the vowel matter. Do not use spelling as the model.

Signal 2: TIME

Then notice timing in the same target model. Duration changes with vowel category, following consonant, stress, speaking rate, and accent. There is no universal stopwatch number to memorize.

The quality-first, timing-second drill

  1. Listen to one trusted model of the pair.
  2. Ignore duration for one pass and ask whether the two vowel qualities sound different.
  3. Record the pair and compare the category you produced.
  4. Only then notice how timing contributes in that same model.
  5. Put one word into a useful phrase and see whether both signals survive.

If you simply stretch sheep while keeping almost the same vowel quality as your ship, you may become very good at holding the wrong target longer. Impressive stamina. Wrong job.

Stay on one row for a few minutes. If the contrast works at the PAIR stage but disappears at LINK, do not restart from zero. Practise one rung below the failure.

Your final test is not whether the word looks perfect in isolation. It is whether the contrast survives English you might actually say.

  1. Word: produce the target once with both signals.
  2. Phrase: add a natural neighboring word.
  3. Own sentence: use the target in something you could genuinely say this week.
  4. Unscripted follow-up: keep recording and add one more sentence without stopping.

For V/W, that could be west → west side → “We stayed on the west side.” For TH, think → think twice → “I’d think twice before changing it.” For final voice, save → save it → “Save it before you close the file.” For vowels, use the exact word whose target-model vowel you already verified.

You can also shift register without changing the pronunciation target. Casual: “Save it for later.” Workplace: “Please save it before sending the final version.” The wording becomes more formal; the target contrast does not need a new theory.

The next-word proof: listen only for the same two signals in your unscripted follow-up. If one disappears, return to the phrase. Do not add a second pronunciation goal yet.

Once both signals survive your own sentence, repeated speaking is more useful than another explanation. Current multilingual phonology research is a useful reminder that transfer is feature-by-feature and individual experience matters. A recognizably Polish accent can coexist perfectly well with precise control of the English contrasts you care about.
