English Pronunciation for Russian Speakers: W, TH, Final Voicing, and Stress
Test W, TH, final voicing, and word stress with a Russian-aware contrast lab, then practise only the feature your own speech actually needs.
Russian makes W/V, TH, final voicing, and English word stress sensible contrasts to test, but none is automatically your problem: hear the difference, identify the cue, build it, and carry only the unstable target into a phrase.
Russian can make these four areas smart places to check. It does not tell us which one you need to fix. If an accent page can predict exactly what your TH sounds like before hearing you say think, it is doing character casting, not diagnosis.
This guide uses four small labs instead: HEAR → CUE → BUILD → CARRY. If a contrast already works, you keep it and leave. The contrast is the target; Russian is only the clue.

Use one English model you actually want to understand and produce. Compare against a trusted dictionary or audio model before changing your speech. This is a self-check, not an accent score.

Russian gives useful clues—not a script for your English
A modern phonetic description in the Journal of the International Phonetic Association gives us several genuinely useful facts. In the standard variety described there, Russian has contrastive consonant voicing but only voiceless obstruents word-finally. Russian also has /v/, while the described phonemic inventory does not contain direct counterparts identical to English /w/, /θ/, or /ð/.
Those facts tell us what is worth checking. They do not tell us what your English must sound like. Russian /v/ itself can vary in how fricative or approximant-like it is in spontaneous speech, and years of bilingual English use can give a learner a perfectly stable English /w/ or final-voicing contrast.
The same source also destroys a particularly unhelpful myth: Russian does not “lack stress.” Russian lexical stress is free and can move across forms, while unstressed vowels undergo substantial reduction. So English stress practice should not begin with “learn to stress words.” It should begin with verify this English word’s exact pattern.
And one boundary is absolute for this page: none of the guidance below is borrowed from Ukrainian or inferred from “Slavic languages in general.” Similar family labels are not a substitute for Russian-specific evidence.
Station 1 — W/V: build a glide-versus-friction contrast
“Russian speakers confuse W and V” is too universal to be useful. A safer statement is this: Russian has /v/ but no phonemic counterpart identical to English /w/ in the standard inventory described above, so the English /w/–/v/ contrast is worth screening.
The mouth movements give you a better target than the letters:

- Listen to one trusted model of wine — vine.
- Touch your lower lip lightly with a finger while you say each word. Do your upper teeth contact it during the first consonant?
- For /w/, exaggerate the lip rounding briefly, then reduce the exaggeration while keeping the glide.
- For /v/, keep the lip-to-teeth friction continuous rather than turning it into a complete closure.
- Carry the contrast into west side — vest pocket, then make one sentence you could actually use.

If you already keep these words distinct, stop. Your nationality does not create extra homework by administrative decree.
Station 2 — TH: hear the category before you place the tongue
Here is why “Russians say S/Z for TH” is poor teaching: the evidence does not support one universal substitute.
A 2021 Speech Communication study tested 16 Russian monolingual listeners with Greek consonants. In that specific perception task, non-native [θ, ð] assimilated to Russian categories including [f, z]. The paper’s review also notes different mappings in earlier Russian-speaker research. That Greek experiment is not an English production study, so the useful conclusion is deliberately small: your nearest category can vary; test perception first.
HEAR first
If your chosen English model uses /θ/ and /ð/, listen for continuous friction at or near the teeth. Compare that quality with whatever your own nearest category is. Do not assume in advance that you are using /s/, /z/, /t/, /d/, /f/, or anything else.
If you cannot reliably hear the target difference yet, stay at MODEL FIRST. Moving the tongue more dramatically will not repair a category you cannot yet identify.
Then build the movement
- /θ/: place the tongue lightly at or between the teeth according to your chosen model, leave a narrow passage for continuous air, and keep it voiceless for this target.
- /ð/: use the same broad dental/interdental friction target and add voicing.
- Hold a short continuous /θ/-like friction without a vowel.
- Add a vowel: thi- as a movement bridge, then say a real target word such as think.
- For /ð/, establish the voiced friction and move into a target word such as this.
- Carry them into think twice and this time.
- Say one useful sentence containing whichever target you actually need.
If your current pronunciation is already intelligible and matches the English variety you want, keeping it is a legitimate choice. The point is to add control, not to pass an accent costume inspection.
Station 3 — Final voicing: listen across the whole word
Russian word-final devoicing makes English contrasts such as bet — bed and safe — save sensible to check. But the repair is not “keep buzzing as hard as possible until the word ends.”
A small Russian-English pilot published in the Indiana University Linguistics Club Working Papers compared four advanced Russian learners with four American-English speakers. The advanced learners could acquire final [+voice], but the groups did not rely on exactly the same acoustic cues: in that small sample, the Russian learners used closure duration and voicing into closure differently rather than matching the comparison group’s preceding-vowel-duration pattern.
Research on Russian final devoicing in the Journal of Phonetics also shows why a simple on/off story is too crude: acoustic traces of a voicing distinction can remain in several measures, and English experience can affect cue use.
Practical translation: train the contrast as a bundle. Compare the preceding vowel, the duration and shape of the final consonant, and available voicing. The goal is a listener-usable lexical contrast—not maximum buzzing at the word edge.
The whole-rhyme drill
- Listen to one trusted target model of bet — bed or safe — save.
- Say the pair slowly and listen to the vowel plus final consonant as one unit.
- Notice whether your pair becomes identical when you stop concentrating on it.
- Move into a phrase: safe place — save time.
- Record a normal-speed sentence such as “We can save time.”

Do not squeeze one cue until it confesses. English speakers themselves distribute this contrast across cues differently by consonant, rate, accent, and context.
Station 4 — Stress: verify before you reduce
This is the section where generic Russian-accent advice most deserves a red pen.
The JIPA description of Russian reports free lexical stress: stress can fall on different syllables, can move across forms, and is associated with strong differences in vowel duration and quality. Russian unstressed vowels also undergo substantial reduction. So “Russian speakers need to learn word stress and reduce unstressed vowels” manages to oversimplify Russian before it reaches English.
The English problem is more specific: which syllable is prominent in this word, and which non-primary-stressed vowels should stay relatively full rather than collapse?
A study indexed by PubMed on Russian learners’ English word recognition and production found that participants significantly reduced vowels in some English secondary-stressed and unstressed-unreduced syllables. The authors linked that behavior to Russian transfer, and inaccurate reduction could affect American-English listeners’ lexical access in the study. That does not mean every Russian learner over-reduces; it means “reduce more” is not a safe blanket instruction.
The lexical-map drill
- Choose one multisyllabic English word you actually use at work, school, or socially.
- Check a trusted dictionary/audio model for its primary stress.
- Listen again specifically for every non-primary-stressed vowel. Which ones are clearly reduced in that model? Which remain relatively full?
- Mark the word on paper: PRIMARY, FULLER, or REDUCED for the syllables you can confidently identify.
- Say the word alone, then place it in a useful phrase.
If the stress is correct but one vowel becomes too reduced in the phrase, your problem is not “English stress” in general. It is that vowel in that word. Much cheaper diagnosis.
Do not let spelling decide the reduction
English does not have a rule saying every syllable without primary stress must turn into the same weak vowel. Some syllables keep fuller vowel quality; some carry secondary stress; patterns differ across words and English varieties. Verify the word you actually need instead of applying a global “unstressed = reduce” switch.
The One-Contrast Workshop
Look back at the four stations. Choose one BUILD IT result. Four features in the title do not require four simultaneous mouth projects.

Stay with that one target until it survives a sentence at normal speed. Controlled pronunciation is access. Conversational pronunciation is automation.
CARRY — make the contrast survive English you actually use
Take your one target through three rungs:
- Phrase: use the short phrase from the matching station.
- Own sentence: write a sentence you could genuinely say this week.
- Unscripted follow-up: keep recording and add one more sentence without stopping.
A pronunciation target can stay stable while register changes. For example, a casual final-voice sentence might be “We can save time.” A workplace version might be “Please save the final file before the meeting.” The wording becomes more formal; the save contrast does not suddenly need a different theory.
One-contrast follow-up: listen only for today’s target in the unscripted sentence. If it disappears, return to the short phrase instead of adding a second target.
Once one contrast survives your own sentence, repeated speaking is more useful than another stereotype list. Keep it, add an alternate, or use the alternate more often
Once you can hear and control a contrast, you still get to decide what it is for.
- Keep your current feature: it works for your identity, English community, and communication goals.
- Add an alternate: you want another option for a workplace, exam, performance, international audience, or simply greater flexibility.
- Use the alternate regularly: the current pattern repeatedly causes a meaning contrast to collapse or conflicts with the English model you personally chose.
A recognizably Russian accent and precise control of selected English contrasts can comfortably exist in the same person. Accent erasure is not the prerequisite for intelligible speech.
Questions Russian-speaking learners should settle before doing more drills
Do Russian speakers always confuse W and V?
No. Russian phonology makes /w/ versus /v/ a sensible contrast to screen, but individual English experience varies enormously. If your rounded /w/ and labiodental /v/ are already stable, leave them alone.
Which sound do Russian speakers use instead of TH?
There is no honest universal answer. Russian listeners have mapped non-native dental fricatives to different categories across studies and tasks. Hear your target and inspect your own production before choosing a repair.
Should I keep an English final voiced consonant fully voiced until the word ends?
No universal maximum-buzz rule is useful. English final-voicing contrasts can involve several cues across the preceding vowel and final consonant. Train the listener-usable contrast in your chosen model.
Does Russian lack English-style word stress or vowel reduction?
No. Russian has free/mobile lexical stress and substantial unstressed-vowel reduction. The English task is word-specific: verify stress and preserve the appropriate full or reduced vowel categories instead of reducing every non-primary-stressed syllable automatically.
Is this guidance borrowed from Ukrainian because both languages are East Slavic?
No. The transfer claims in this guide use Russian-specific phonetic description or Russian-speaker evidence. Another Slavic language is not being used as a shortcut for your pronunciation.

Four contrasts are not four compulsory repairs
You do not need to fix “a Russian accent.” You need a more specific question.
Can you hear and build the W/V movement contrast? Can you identify TH friction before guessing a substitute? Does final voicing remain listener-usable across the whole word? Have you verified English stress and vowel quality before reducing anything?
HEAR → CUE → BUILD → CARRY. Keep the contrasts that already work. Add the alternates you want. The contrast is the target; Russian is only the clue.
