Tự học shadowing không có giáo viên: kiểm tra wording, timing, stress, chunking và rejoin; verify bên ngoài khi pronunciation, grammar hoặc register còn mơ hồ.
Không có giáo viên không có nghĩa là bạn không thể tự kiểm tra. Nhưng hãy self-check thứ bạn thật sự nghe thấy: wording, timing, stress, chunking, rejoin. Khi judgment phụ thuộc pronunciation convention, grammar, register hoặc accent variety, verify bên ngoài.
Bạn nghe recording và biết “có gì đó khác”. Fine. Nhưng khác không đồng nghĩa sai. Recording của bạn không cần một phiên tòa; nó cần một observable difference.
Check → Compare → Classify → Repair → Verify
- Check: nghe lại một lần và chọn một difference cụ thể.
- Compare: compare đúng feature đó với source.
- Classify: wording, timing/rejoin, stress, chunking, meaning/usage hay uncertain?
- Repair: thay đổi một thing rồi retry.
- Verify: nếu judgment vượt quá thứ bạn chắc chắn nghe được, check source đáng tin.

Những thứ bạn có thể tự check khá tốt
- Wording: có word nào biến mất, thêm vào hoặc đổi không?
- Timing: bạn vào quá sớm/quá muộn ở đâu?
- Rejoin: miss một chunk xong có bắt lại được source không?
- Prominence: main stress rơi vào cùng information như source không?
- Chunking: pause của bạn có split phrase khác rõ ràng không?
- Transfer: repair có survive trong một fresh/changing sentence không?
British Council Vietnam khuyên learner nghe, đối chiếu với script/source, tìm phần miss và tìm hiểu vì sao. Đó là một self-check rất khác với “accent mình dở”.
Những thứ nên flag rồi verify, không phán ngay
- Một pronunciation lạ nhưng có thể là valid variety.
- Một vowel/consonant detail bạn chưa hear reliably.
- Một grammar form khác source nhưng có thể vẫn grammatical.
- Một register/politeness difference phụ thuộc context.
- Một source-model difference có thể là stylistic—not an error.
Ở đây, câu đúng nhất thường là: “Mình nghe thấy X khác. Mình chưa chắc X sai.”

Word disappeared
Self-check được. Replay source, confirm wording, repair chunk.
Stress differs
Self-check difference được. Sau đó ask: intended meaning có khác không?
Unfamiliar vowel
VERIFY. Dictionary/human model/teacher/source variety before calling it wrong.
Grammar differs but may be valid
VERIFY context. Different from source is not enough to label it wrong.
Whole accent “bad”
Reject the diagnosis. Narrow to one observable feature.

Original practice example
I didn’t mean to interrupt.
Nếu bạn nói I didn’t mean interrupt, hãy phân loại là wrong. Listener thường vẫn recover apology intent. Natural alternative là I didn’t mean to interrupt. Pattern là mean to + verb.
Self-check: wording mismatch observable. Verify rule only if you are unsure why to is needed.
Repair phrase only, then retry full line.
Original practice example
I wanted the BLUE one.
Nếu prominence rơi vào ONE khi intended contrast là colour, form đó context-dependent. Listener có thể infer item contrast. Natural alternative cho colour contrast là prominence trên BLUE; ONE vẫn valid ở context khác.
Self-check: stress location is observable; “correctness” depends on intended meaning.
Name the contrast before deciding which stress is better.
Original practice example
Could you send it by Friday?
Nếu bạn nói Could you send it until Friday? với intended deadline meaning, form đó unusual / non-idiomatic. Listener có thể hear duration. Natural alternative là by Friday; until Friday vẫn valid trong durative contexts.
Self-check wording first. If meaning distinction is unclear, verify usage before “correcting yourself”.
Transfer: Could you finish it by Monday?
Original practice example
Could you repeat that, please?
Can you repeat that, please? cũng context-dependent và grammatically valid. Listener hiểu cả hai là request. Could you…? thường slightly more tentative/polite; can không sai.
If source says could and you said can, you observed a difference—not automatically an error.
Verify register only if that is today’s target.
Repair xong, test một câu mới
Self-review dễ bị fooled bởi clip quen. Sau repair, đổi một detail hoặc dùng một matched fresh line. Nếu feature survive, đó là practical evidence tốt hơn việc polish source line thêm mười lần.
