Luyện paraphrase khi nói bằng Meaning Lock → Change Lever → Equivalence Check: đổi cấu trúc nhưng giữ event, time, certainty, politeness và focus.
Paraphrase không phải trò “đổi càng nhiều từ càng tốt”. Job thật là giữ message cố định rồi thay cách diễn đạt mà listener vẫn nhận được cùng event, time, certainty, politeness và focus.
Nếu câu mới trông rất khác nhưng meaning cũng chạy mất dép, bạn không paraphrase—bạn vừa viết một câu khác.
Meaning Lock → Change One Lever → Equivalence Check
- Meaning Lock: nói ngắn gọn điều gì không được phép thay đổi.
- Change One Lever: đổi một frame, clause order, structure hoặc contextual wording.
- Say It: nói version mới thành tiếng.
- Equivalence Check: compare event, time, certainty, politeness/register và focus.
- Repair: nếu một dimension lệch ngoài ý muốn, sửa đúng dimension đó.
Keep the message fixed; move the language around it.
Paraphrasing không chỉ là synonym
British Council TeachingEnglish mô tả paraphrasing là tìm một cách khác để nói điều gì đó và xem đây là một skill quan trọng cho communicative ability. British Council IELTS cũng dùng paraphrasing như một speaking strategy khi exact word chưa đến ngay.
Vậy nên nếu bạn không tìm được synonym, không sao. Bạn có thể đổi structure, explain concept, đảo clause hoặc dùng một frame khác.
Sáu lever để đổi cách nói mà không chơi “synonym roulette”
- Clause order: reason trước hay result trước.
- Sentence frame: I think... → In my view....
- Verb ↔ noun phrase: chỉ khi version mới nghe natural.
- Direct ↔ tentative wording: nhưng phải note nếu politeness đổi.
- Explicit explanation: explain meaning khi không nhớ exact word.
- Contextual synonym: dùng synonym chỉ khi register/collocation vẫn fit.
Equivalence Check: năm thứ phải kiểm
Nếu một box fail, sentence có thể vẫn grammatical. Nó chỉ không còn là equivalent paraphrase cho goal hiện tại.

Original practice example
I’m tired, so I’m staying home.
I’m staying home because I’m tired. là grammatically valid và meaning-preserving cho intended cause/result relation. Clause order đổi, core event/time/cause không đổi.
Đây là lever an toàn để luyện trước: đổi order, không săn synonym.
Try another reason/result sentence and reverse the clause order.
Original practice example
Could you send it by Friday?
Would it be possible to send it by Friday? là grammatically valid with a slightly different register/stance. Listener vẫn nhận cùng request/deadline, nhưng version mới thường more tentative/formal. Đừng gọi shift đó “same in every way”.
Useful khi bạn muốn luyện nhiều levels of directness.
Name the register shift before keeping the version.
Original practice example
I usually work from home.
I always work from home. là grammatically valid with a different meaning. Frequency changed from usual to always, so this is not an equivalent paraphrase.
A paraphrase can fail because of one tiny adverb, even when grammar is perfect.
Try Most days, I work from home. and decide whether that is close enough for your intended meaning.
Original practice example
I wanted the BLUE one.
The blue one was the one I wanted. là grammatically valid and can preserve the same colour contrast, nhưng prosodic focus vẫn phải support intended meaning. Nếu stress chuyển sang một element khác, listener interpretation có thể đổi.
Structure can move; focus still matters.
Say both versions while keeping colour as the contrast.
Version mới của bạn đang thuộc case nào?
Everything important stayed aligned
KEEP. You have a useful paraphrase.
Register shifted intentionally
KEEP WITH NOTE. It may be a useful alternative, just not semantically identical in every dimension.
Time/frequency/certainty changed accidentally
REPAIR. Restore the lost meaning dimension.
Sentence became unnatural
REJECT that version. “Different” is not enough.
No synonym comes
Change structure or explain the idea. Paraphrase does not require a thesaurus.

Đừng đo paraphrase bằng số synonym. Đo bằng listener meaning.
Lock the message. Change one lever. Check equivalence. Then build another version.
