Bạn hỏi What do you do?.
Người kia trả lời.
Excellent.
Bây giờ đừng biến họ thành podcast guest.
CONTEXT → OPEN QUESTION → FIND THREAD → ADD ONE RELEVANT DETAIL → FOLLOW OR BRIDGE
What did you think of the product talk?
The onboarding example was interesting.
I work on onboarding too—we’ve been trying to simplify the first-week experience.
What was the hardest part to change on your side?
Cambridge defines networking as meeting and talking to people who may be useful to know, especially professionally, or to get useful information. Xem Cambridge — networking.
British Council Vietnam’s networking guide recommends preparing open questions and starting with small talk before jumping straight to contact exchange. It also gives context-based openers around the event, a presentation, someone’s company or current projects. Xem Hội đồng Anh — Networking.
Original practice example
What did you think of the product talk?
Conference, meetup, professional event.
Nghĩa: Bạn thấy phần trình bày về sản phẩm thế nào?
Thay the product talk bằng một session, panel hoặc event context thật.
British Council’s Meeting face-to-face cũng models context-driven first-meeting language such as How are you finding it here?.
Original practice example
How did you get into this kind of work?
Networking with someone in another team, company or field.
British Council’s Keeping a conversation going models reacting, asking back and moving through relevant topics. British Council’s Relationship-building material likewise emphasizes listening and noticing what people say about their interests.
Ví dụ:
A: We’ve been redesigning onboarding.
Ba possible next turns:
- How long have you worked there? — possible, nhưng đổi topic.
- What was the hardest part to change? — follows the thread.
- Một autobiography 60 giây — steals the thread.
Original practice example
I work on onboarding too—we’ve been trying to simplify the first-week experience.
When someone mentions a professional topic you genuinely work on too.
Original practice example
What was the hardest part to change on your side?
Deepening a useful professional topic.
BRIDGE OR CLOSE: contact không phải huy chương bắt buộc
British Council Vietnam recommends meaningful conversation before simply exchanging contact details and emphasizes the quality of relationships over quantity. Xem guide.
Original practice example
It was great talking about this. Would you be open to staying in touch?
Closing a useful professional networking conversation.
It was nice meeting you. Enjoy the rest of the event.
A: I work in product design.
B: How long have you worked there? Where are you from? What projects are you working on?
Xem diagnosis
INTERROGATION MODE. Pick one thread: Product design—that’s interesting. What kind of product are you working on?
A: We’ve been redesigning onboarding.
B: How long have you worked at the company?
Xem diagnosis
THREAD MISSED. Onboarding vừa sáng đèn. Follow nó hoặc add một relevant detail.
A: We’re redesigning onboarding.
B: launches a 60-second biography.
Xem diagnosis
PITCH HIJACK. ADD một relevant line rồi trả turn: I work on onboarding too—we’ve been simplifying our first-week flow.
A: describes difficulty getting users through first setup.
B: What was the hardest part to change?
Xem diagnosis
FOLLOW. The question grows from the existing thread.
Context: both people discover they are solving a very similar onboarding problem and have compared approaches.
Xem next move
BRIDGE. It was great talking about this. Would you be open to staying in touch?
Context: short friendly conversation; no clear shared thread develops.
Xem next move
CLOSE. It was nice meeting you. Enjoy the rest of the event. No forced contact request needed.
Bốn câu networking dễ làm conversation cứng hơn cần thiết
| Câu gốc | Phân loại | Người nghe hiểu gì | Ý định | Cách tự nhiên hơn | Ghi chú |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What is your job? | Grammatically valid but direct/context-dependent | Asks the person’s occupation. | Learn what they do professionally. | What do you do? / What kind of work are you doing at the moment? | Original is not wrong; in some networking contexts it can feel questionnaire-like. |
| I work in marketing since five years. | Wrong tense/preposition pattern for intended duration | Long-term marketing experience is clear. | Say they have worked in marketing for five years. | I’ve been working in marketing for five years. | Since takes a starting point, e.g. since 2021. |
| Can I have your contact? | Understandable but unusual/non-idiomatic for an ordinary contact-details request | Asks for contact information. | Stay in touch. | Would you be open to staying in touch? / Could I get your contact details? | Platform-specific alternatives may fit if both people already use that platform. |
| It was nice meeting you. We keep contact. | Second sentence is unusual/non-idiomatic for intended future contact | Intention to remain connected is recoverable. | Close and maintain contact. | It was nice meeting you. Let’s keep in touch. | Keep in contact is also possible in other contexts. |
