The short answer

你說:I have to go. By the way, did you watch that new show?——conversation

Close → Bridge → Launch

Signal → Wrap → Exit

Original practice example

That sounds like a good plan. Speaking of travel, have you booked your hotel yet?

第一句先 acknowledge current point;Speaking of travel...

That makes sense. That sounds good.I see.

Related topic:Speaking of...

Speaking of travel, have you booked your hotel yet?

Association:That reminds me...

That reminds me—I still need to send you the address.

Return:Going back to...

Going back to what you said about the budget, do we have a final number?

Unrelated or deliberately detached:On a different note...

Original practice example

That makes sense. On a different note, did you see Maya’s email about Friday?

On a different note

Meeting / task:Moving on to...

Before we move on, can I ask one thing about the timeline?

Moving on to the next point, we need to decide the deadline.

“By the way” 很好用,但不是英文版 Ctrl+Tab

Historical-pragmatics research 把 by the way 放在 digressive topic-shift markers 這一類:它很適合引入和前面關聯較弱、帶點插入感的新資訊。查看 by-the-way research

所以:

  • By the way, did you get my message? —
  • Speaking of the conference, where are you staying?

不是說 related topic 不能用 by the way。 研究對 discourse-management markers 也會區分 return、new topic、digression 等不同 orientation。

只說 By the way...

  • Speaking of travel, have you booked your hotel yet?
  • On a different note, did you see the email from Maya?
  • Going back to the budget, do we have the final number?

Sorry—that was a bit of a jump. I was asking because we need to decide today.

Well、anyway、by the way:都能管 conversation,但 job 不一樣

Well 有很多 interactional functions。

Anyway, I should get going.

Signal → Wrap → Exit

Opening Up Closings

Original practice example

Anyway, I should get going. It was great catching up.

Anyway, I should get going 是 Signal; It was great catching up 是 Wrap。

Wrap

  • It was great catching up.
  • Thanks for the chat.
  • I’m glad we talked about this.

Exit / future connection:

  • Talk to you soon.
  • I’ll let you know how it goes.
  • See you on Friday.

Original practice example

I’d love to keep talking, but I have to run. Talk to you soon.

Anyway, I should get going. It was great catching up. Talk soon.

Networking / party

It was really nice talking to you. I’m going to say hello to a few more people, but I hope we can catch up again.

Work / meeting

I think that covers what we needed today. Thanks, everyone. I’ll send the notes afterward.

Phone / video call

I need to jump off in a minute. Thanks for the call—I’ll follow up by email.

I’d love to hear it, but I really have to run. Tell me next time.

I want to change the topic”

每個新 topic 都 “By the way...”

說 “I have to go” 後又開三個新 topic

I need to go.

說 “I finish the conversation now.”

I should get going.

Same Conversation, Three Goals

Goal A — Related topic shift

That sounds stressful. Speaking of the trip, how was the hotel?

Mechanism:Close → Bridge → Launch。

Goal B — Unrelated but necessary shift

That sounds stressful. On a different note, did you see the update about Friday’s meeting?

By the way, did you see the update about Friday?

Goal C — Clean exit

Goal:

Anyway, I should get going. It was great catching up. Talk to you soon.

Mechanism:Signal → Wrap → Exit。

Oh, before you go, did I tell you about...

不能 stay:I’d love to hear it, but I really have to run. Tell me next time.

“I finish the conversation now” 聽得懂,但不像自然 closing

I finish the conversation now.

I should get going. / I need to head out. / I’d better get going. / Sorry to cut this short, but I need to go.

Context note:finish the conversation 本身可以是正常 descriptive language,例如 We can finish this conversation later.

Two-lane drill

That sounds like a busy week.

Version A:接一個 topic shift,用 Close → Bridge → Launch。
