The short answer

What’s your biggest fear?——conversation

Notice → Reveal → Invite → Deepen

  • Invite:問一個 open but bounded question,讓對方自己決定 answer depth。

一句話:open a door, don’t drag someone through it.

  • Preference:I actually love rainy weekends.
  • Repeated activity:I go hiking most Sundays.
  • Change:I just started a new job.
  • Challenge:This project has been intense.
  • Anticipation:I’m really looking forward to the trip.
  • Opinion:This city is easier to live in than I expected.

Original practice example

This weather makes me want to stay inside all weekend. What do you usually like doing when it’s like this?

Reveal:

Original practice example

I’ve been trying to get outside more lately. You said you hike most weekends—what do you like most about it?

查看 listening/responsiveness review

Invite:

Original practice example

You mentioned the new project. What has been the most interesting part so far?

work、study、course、project、new responsibility 等 safe small-talk topic 已經被對方提起時。

  • How did you get into that?
  • What keeps you interested in it?
  • What do you like most about it?
  • What has surprised you most so far?

Deepen:

Original practice example

You’ve lived here for a while—what made this place feel like home for you?

A: I usually go hiking on weekends.
B: What do you like most about it?
A: I don’t know. I just go sometimes.

Fair enough. Are there any good trails around here?

Potentially personal?

  • If you don’t mind me asking...
  • You don’t have to answer if that’s too personal.

What do you like most about hiking?

Sorry—that was more personal than I meant. We can leave it there.

We can leave it there,下一句又問:But just roughly...。

If you don’t mind me asking...”

Same Small Talk, Three Paths

Other person:I usually go hiking on weekends.

Path A — Stay surface

Nice. Do you usually go somewhere nearby?

Path B — Deepen one step

Reveal + Invite:

I’ve been trying to get outside more lately. You said you hike most weekends—what do you like most about it?

It helps me clear my head after a busy week.

才再 Deepen 一個 connected step:Is that what keeps you going back?

Path C — Back off

I don’t know. I just go sometimes.

Fair enough. Are there any good trails around here?

Overreach repair

Sorry—that was more personal than I meant. We can leave it there.

“What do you like in hiking?”

What do you like in hiking?

What do you like about hiking? / What do you enjoy most about hiking?

What do you look for in hiking shoes?。

Hook + Share + Invite

選一個 safe topic:weather、weekend、hobby、work 或 city。

Open a door, don’t drag someone through it

Notice → Reveal → Invite → Deepen
