句動詞を使って話す練習｜セリフをまねて場面を変える
句動詞を知っているのに会話で出ない人へ。SCENE→CHUNK→CHECK→SWAP→OWNで、one senseをセリフで確認し、objectや場面を変えて自分の英語にする練習をします。
句動詞だけを暗記せず、one sceneのwhole lineをまねてから、意味と語順をcheckし、sceneの一部を変えて自分のsentenceへtransferします。
pick up = 拾う と覚えた。なのに I’ll pick you up at six. で止まる。問題はmemory量よりscene transferです。句動詞を覚えたかではなく、場面を変えても言えるか。
- SCENE：one senseをsceneで固定する
- CHUNK：whole lineでまねる
- CHECK：meaningとobject orderを確認する
- SWAP：scene variableを一つ変える
- OWN：自分のreal situationで言う
SCENE：まずone senseだけ固定する
Cambridge GrammarのPhrasal verbs and multi-word verbsでは、phrasal verbはmain verbとparticle(s)の組み合わせで、partsをそのまま足しただけでは分からないmeaningを持つことがあると説明されています。
だから、最初から「pick up = ○○」と一個の日本語訳へ固定しません。Cambridge Dictionaryのpick upにも複数のsenseがあります。

same spellingでもsceneが変わればsenseが変わることがあります。まず「このlineでは何をしている？」を一文で言えるようにします。
CHUNK：句動詞だけでなく、whole lineを口に入れる
British CouncilのPhrasal verbsも、phrasal verbsをcontextの中で扱っています。このlessonでも、pick upだけを10回言うのではなく、whole lineをまねます。

まねたら、すぐ次へ行かず、sentenceの中でどこまでがreusable chunkか見ます。

句動詞notebookがどれだけ分厚くても、mouthからwhole lineが出なければmuseumです。CHUNKでは「meaningを知る」から「lineとして出す」へ移ります。
CHECK：separableか、objectはどこに置くか
Cambridge Grammarは、objectを取るphrasal verbsの中にもseparableなものとinseparableなものがあると説明しています。全部を同じ語順にしてはいけません。
例えば、physical-objectのpick upのようなseparable patternでは、pronoun objectは通常verbとparticleの間に置きます。

でもこのruleをすべてのphrasal verbsへコピーしないでください。CHECKでは、そのverbのactual patternをdictionary/grammarで確認します。
SWAP：sceneの一部だけ変える
いきなり完全に新しいsentenceを作ると、grammar・meaning・vocabularyを全部同時に考えることになります。SWAPではone variableだけ変えます。

最後のrowではmeaningが動きました。そこでSCENEへ戻ります。one senseを守るtransferと、senseが変わったtransferを区別するのが大事です。
OWN：自分のreal situationへ一回だけ持ってくる
最後に、自分の生活で使いそうなone lineを作ります。

ここで初めて「知っている句動詞」が「自分が言える句動詞」に近づきます。

Sense: physical lifting/picking up.
Scene B — package at the front desk
I need to pick up a package.
Sense changed: collect/retrieve. Re-anchor the meaning before reusing.
Scene C — friend needs a ride
I’ll pick you up at six.
Sense changed again: collect a person by vehicle / meet and take them somewhere.

physical-object sense。pronoun it はverbとparticleの間に置きます。
床に落ちたphone/key/bagを拾ってほしい場面。
「それを拾ってくれる？」
itをthe bagに変え、two possible noun-object ordersを言ってください。

Could you turn it down a little?
ここではturn down = volume/levelを下げるsense。itをmiddleに置きます。
music/TV/volumeが大きい場面。
「少し音を下げてもらえる？」
itをthe musicに変えてlineを作り、そのあと“invitationを断る”senseとは別sceneだと説明してください。

run out of + nounをwhole chunkで扱います。particle/prepositionをdropしません。
food, battery, time, suppliesがなくなった場面。
「今朝、牛乳を切らしました。」
milkをtime / coffee / batteryにswapして、自分のsceneを作ってください。

turn downでsenseが変わるときは、sceneをresetする
Cambridge Dictionaryのturn downには、levelを下げるsenseだけでなく、offer/requestなどをrefuse/rejectするsenseもあります。

formが似ていても、sceneが変わればmeaningをCHECKし直します。particleを見てguessするより、sceneをanchorにします。
Final drill：one phrase, three scenes
今日覚えたいphrasal verbを一つだけ選びます。dictionaryでone senseとgrammar patternをcheckしたら、three scenesを作ります。
句動詞を覚えたかではなく、場面を変えても言えるか。 listをもう20個増やす前に、今日のone phraseをthree scenesへ動かしてみてください。sceneが変わってmeaningが壊れたら、それは失敗ではなく、SCENEへ戻るsignalです。
