HOLD→SEARCH→START→REPAIR→DELIVERで、Well・Let me think・I meanを役割別に使い、短く時間を作ってanswerへ戻る練習をします。
What do you think? → Um... well... you know... I mean...。 timeを買うphraseは、answerへのbridge。 one signal → short pause → first clauseへ戻ります。
- HOLD:thinking signal
- START:simple first clauseを出す
- REPAIR:false start
- Well, let me think.
- Well, that’s a difficult question.
- Well...
Cambridge DictionaryのLet’s seeでは、let’s see / let me see / let me think が、carefully考えたりrememberしようとしたりするときに使われると説明されています。
| Phrase | Best job in this lesson | Example start |
|---|---|---|
| Well... | thinkingをmark | Well... I liked the ending. |
| Let me think. | idea/memory searchをexplicitにする | Let me think. I’d say Friday was the busiest day. |
| Let’s see. | answerをassemble/rememberする | Let’s see... I think there were four people. |
British CouncilのKeeping a conversation goingでも、conversationの中で Let me think...
Well, let me think... のあとにさらに you know, I mean, basically...
SEARCH:phrase
Let me think. ... I enjoyed the second half more.
| Question | Don’t search for | Search for |
|---|---|---|
| What did you think of the movie? | perfect review | liked / disliked + one reason |
| Why did you choose the train? | complete argument | price / time / comfort |
| What did you do last weekend? | whole timeline | one memorable event |
Too ambitious:
Well, let me think... What I really want to say is that the film’s treatment of...
Usable start:
Well, I liked it overall.
Well, I liked it overall. The ending was much stronger than the beginning.
REPAIR:wrong start
- It was boring— I mean, it was slow at first.
- I went on Thursday— I mean Friday.
- I liked the design. I mean, it was simple and easy to use.
| Prompt | Bridge | DELIVER |
|---|---|---|
| How was the meeting? | Well, let me think. | It was useful, but we didn’t make a final decision. |
| Why did you choose this one? | Let’s see... | Mostly because it was easier to use. |
| What did you do on Sunday? | Well... | I met a friend and we walked around the city. |
Question:
What did you think of the movie?
Raw response:
Um... well... you know... I mean... it was...
Model
Well, let me think. I liked it overall. I mean, the story was slow at first, but the ending worked for me.

| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Let me to think. |
| Let’s me think. | wrong | let’s see と let me think が混ざっています。 | thinkingをsignalする | Let me think. / Let’s see. |
| I mean we should take the train. | 自分のopinionをintroduceする | I think we should take the train. | CambridgeはI meanをI thinkと同じようにopinion introductionへ使わないと説明しています。 |
| Well, um, you know, I mean, maybe... | thinking timeを作る | Well, let me think. ... I’d choose the first option. |
Final drill:delete two fillers
timeを買うphraseは、answerへのbridge。 shortにholdして、pauseして、first usable clauseへ戻る。
