A is betterだけで終わる人へ。
The train is better than the bus.。でもprice?speed?comfort?betterの前に、better at what? criteriaが見えれば、differenceもchoiceもずっと説明しやすくなります。
- For this trip, time matters more than price.
- For me, quiet is more important than location.
- For this meeting, flexibility matters most.
ここでFRAMEを作ると、最後のchoiceが「A is just better」ではなくなります。
MATCH:AとBをsame criteriaで比べる
| Criterion | Train | Bus |
|---|---|---|
| price | more expensive | cheaper |
| travel time | faster | slower |
| comfort | more comfortable | less comfortable |
| flexibility | less flexible | more flexible |
CONTRAST:difference
Cambridge GrammarのComparison: adjectivesでは、comparative adjectiveで一つのthing/personを別のものと比べ、older than や more experienced than のような形を使います。
- The train is faster than the bus.
- The bus is cheaper than the train.
- The train is more comfortable than the bus.
contrastを一文にまとめたいとき、CambridgeのWhile and whilstが示すように、while はcontrastにも使えます。
The train is faster, while the bus is cheaper.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| A is X, but B is Y. | The train is faster, but the bus is cheaper. |
| A has an advantage, while B has another. | The café near the station is more convenient, while the other café is quieter. |
| Both work, but one criterion differs. | Both times work, but the later meeting is easier for me. |
CambridgeのPreferでは、prefer A to B を使い、prefer A than B は使わないと説明されています。
- I prefer the train to the bus because time matters more for this trip.
- I prefer the quieter café because I need to work.
- For this meeting, I’d prefer the later time.
actionsを比べるなら、CambridgeのWould ratherが示すように、would rather + base verb と than を使えます。
I’d rather take the train than spend another hour on the road.
Comparison lab:criteria
Option A = train、Option B = bus。
Model
The train is faster than the bus, but it’s more expensive. The bus is cheaper, while the train is more comfortable. For this trip, time matters more than price, so I prefer the train to the bus.
4つのcompare-and-choose practice card
Original practice example
The train is faster than the bus, but the bus is cheaper.
Original practice example
The station café is more convenient, while the park café is quieter.
work/study場所を選ぶ場面。
“work for two hours”というuse caseならどちらを選ぶか続けてください。
Original practice example
Both times work, but the later meeting is easier for me.
Original practice example
I prefer the online class to the in-person class because it fits my schedule better.
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The bus is more cheaper than the train. | priceをcompareする | The bus is cheaper than the train. |
| The train is faster as the bus. | trainのほうが速いと言う | The train is faster than the bus. |
| I prefer the train than the bus. | trainを選ぶ | I prefer the train to the bus. | prefer A to B。 |
| The train is better. | 具体的な違いを説明して選ぶ | The train is faster, so it’s better for this trip. |
Final drill:better
betterの前に、better at what?
