英語で確信の度合いを伝える練習|たぶん・かもしれない・分からない
maybeやI thinkばかりになる人へ。CHECK→BAND→SAY→GROUND→LIMITで、likely・possible・unsure・unknownを分け、evidenceに合う確信の強さで話す練習をします。
確信のphraseを選ぶ前に、まず「何を本当に知っているか」を確認します。evidenceに合わせてlikely・possible・unsure・unknownを分けます。
同僚がdeskにいない。She’s probably at lunch.、She might be at lunch.、I’m not sure where she is.、I don’t know. は同じではありません。phraseより先に、evidenceの強さを見る。
- CHECK:実際に知っていることを確認する
- BAND:LIKELY / POSSIBLE / UNSURE / UNKNOWN に置く
- SAY:bandに合うphraseを選ぶ
- GROUND:強めのclaimならobservationを一つ添える
- LIMIT:evidenceを超えて言い切らない
CHECK:phraseより先に、evidenceを見る
同じ「deskにいない」でも、持っているinformationで言い方は変わります。
| What you know | What you do not know | Useful band |
|---|---|---|
| calendarにLunchとある | 実際にどこで食べているか | LIKELY |
| deskがemptyだけ | where / why | POSSIBLE |
| meetingかもしれないと聞いたが曖昧 | current location | UNSURE |
| schedule情報が何もない | ほぼ全部 | UNKNOWN |
certaintyを盛る前に、known factとguessを分けます。
LIKELY:「たぶんそう」と言えるbasisがある
CambridgeのModality: other modal words and expressionsでは、probably、possibly、certainly、likely、unlikely などがdegrees of certaintyを表すwordsとして紹介されています。
- She’s probably at lunch.
- He’ll probably reply this afternoon.
- It’s likely that the meeting will finish late.
probably はguaranteeではありません。このarticleでは、random possibilityよりstrongerなbasisがあるときのlearner defaultとして扱います。
POSSIBLE:「一つの可能性」として言う
CambridgeのCould, may and mightでは、could、may、might がpossibilityを表し、native speakersの間でも「どれがどれだけmore/less certainか」についてagreementがないと説明されています。
- She might be at lunch.
- The package may be delayed.
- It could be a connection problem.
だから might = 30%、may = 50% のようなuniversal ladderは作りません。certaintyを盛らない。
CambridgeのMaybe or perhaps?では、maybe と perhaps は「possibleだがnot certain」を表し、perhaps はslightly more formalだと説明されています。
- Maybe she’s at lunch.
- Perhaps the room is being used.
UNSURE:「candidateはある。でも自分でも自信がない」
possible explanationは浮かんでいる。でもevidenceがmixed/weakなら、uncertainty自体を言葉にできます。
- I’m not sure, but she may be in a meeting.
- I think it might be a network problem, but I’m not sure.
- I’m not certain what happened.
I’m not sure はfillerではありません。「このinterpretationにはlimitがある」とlistenerへ伝える情報です。
UNKNOWN:「分からない」が一番accurateなとき
candidateもbasisもないなら、answerをinventしなくていい。
- I don’t know where she is.
- I don’t know yet.
- I don’t have enough information to say.
UNKNOWNはweak Englishではありません。情報がないのにpossible explanationを作るより、ずっとclearです。
GROUND:strongerなdeductionにはfactを見せる
British CouncilのModals: probabilityは、modal verbsや他のexpressionsでspeakerのcertaintyを示す方法を扱っています。CambridgeのMustでは、must がfactsからのdeduction/conclusionに使われ、negative deductionには can’t / cannot が使われると説明されています。
Observation:
The office lights are off, the door is locked, and everyone’s coats are gone.
Deduction:
They must have left already.
ここで must は“strong-sounding guess”として使うのではなく、observed factsからのdeductionとして扱います。
Negative deduction:
That can’t be our room—the number on the door is different.
maybe と may be を分ける
CambridgeのMaybe or may be?では、maybe はone-word adverb、may be はmodal may + verb be と説明されています。
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| maybe | Maybe she’s at lunch. |
| may be | She may be at lunch. |
Certainty lab:同じsituationを4 evidence levelsで言う
Base situation: coworkerがdeskにいない。
A model
She’s probably at lunch. Her calendar says lunch until one.
B model
She might be at lunch.
C model
I’m not sure. She may be in a meeting.
D model
I don’t know where she is.
4つのcertainty practice card
Original practice example
The package will probably arrive tomorrow, but I haven’t received confirmation.
LIKELYだがguaranteeではない。最後のclauseでinformation limitも見せます。
ordinary delivery/statusをcasualに説明する場面。
「荷物はたぶん明日届きますが、確認はまだ来ていません。」
probablyをguaranteeに変えず、basisを一つ足してください。
Original practice example
He might be busy.
POSSIBLE。返信がないことから一つのpossible explanationを出しますが、factとはclaimしません。
friend/coworkerがreplyしていない場面。
「忙しいのかもしれません。」
別のpossible explanationをcould/mayで作ってください。
Original practice example
I’m not sure, but it could be a connection problem.
UNSUREを明示してからcandidate explanationを出します。
computer/appのordinary non-safety-critical issueを話す場面。
「分かりませんが、接続の問題かもしれません。」
原因を断定せず、別candidateへ言い換えてください。
Original practice example
I don’t know yet. I need to check.
UNKNOWNをそのまま伝え、次のverification actionだけ言います。
情報不足で答えを出せないordinary conversation。
「まだ分かりません。確認する必要があります。」
invented guessを入れず、what you will checkを一つ足してください。
Certainty Englishのmistakeも修理する
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maybe she may be at lunch. | unusual/overly formal/non-idiomatic | possibility markerが重なり、meaningは分かりますがredundantに聞こえます。 | lunchの可能性を言う | Maybe she’s at lunch. / She may be at lunch. | special emphasis/contextを除けばone markerで十分です。 |
| She maybe at lunch. | wrong | lunchの可能性は分かりますが、maybeをverb phraseの代わりに使っています。 | may + beを使う | She may be at lunch. | may be はtwo words。 |
| It must rain tomorrow. | context-dependent | 文脈によってobligation-like/forced readingやunusual predictionに聞こえます。 | 明日のrainをprobabilityとして予想する | It will probably rain tomorrow. / It might rain tomorrow. | Cambridgeはmustをfactsからのdeductionに使い、generic future predictionには通常使わないと説明しています。 |
| I don’t know. Maybe it’s definitely a network problem. | grammatically valid with a different meaning | uncertaintyとstrong certainty markerが同じclaim内でぶつかり、speaker stanceが不明瞭です。 | 原因がone possibilityだと言う | I don’t know. It might be a network problem. | Contextual rhetorical useはあり得ますが、learner defaultではcertainty levelをそろえます。 |
Final drill:I’m sureを一度downgradeする
自分がよく言う I’m sure... sentenceを三つ思い出し、実際のevidenceに合わせてLIKELY / POSSIBLE / UNSURE / UNKNOWNへ置き直します。
phraseより先に、evidenceの強さを見る。 probablyはguaranteeではない。mightは固定percentageではない。そして情報がなければ I don’t know yet. でいい。strong Englishより、accurate confidenceのほうがlistenerには役立ちます。
